Bengals assessing options at safety with starter Geno Stone sidelined because of injuryNew Foto - Bengals assessing options at safety with starter Geno Stone sidelined because of injury

CINCINNATI (AP) — After the Cincinnati Bengals secondary struggled in the preseason opener, starting safety Geno Stone learned that he has a soft tissue injury that has him out on a "week-to-week" basis. Those recent developments gave the Bengals a lot to discuss and work on heading into their second preseason game against the Washington Commanders on Monday night. Coach Zac Taylor said that the Philadelphia Eagles' success against the Bengals in last week's preseason opener showed the Bengals defensive backs some areas to focus on going forward. Penalties from the Bengals also made a big difference last week, and Taylor wants to see those cleaned up in Washington. "We were just in a lot of one-on-one positions where we were fingertip away a lot of times," Taylor said. "Continue to be competitive, continue to be detailed up on scrimmage. I think overall, operationally, there were some things on offense, defense and special teams that we've we've got to be better at. That had nothing to do with Philly, and that's, that's one of our primary focuses right now as a team, not having a joint practice this week." Without Stone in the short term, Tycen Anderson, Daijahn Anthony and PJ Jules have been battling for first-team reps on defense. Even though the Bengals didn't utilize their safety depth last season, they only added undrafted free agents into that position group. As a result, the backups behind Stone who are now contenders for a first-team role are getting their first real chance to show what they're capable of in a starting opportunity. Anthony played some backup slot cornerback during the first two weeks last season. But after he committed a key penalty, he lost that role and didn't play much during the rest of his rookie season. He has received a fresh start in 2025 with a new defensive coordinator, and he has been Stone's primary backup as the second-team free safety. "Safety is just slowing down for me now," Anthony said. "What's changed the most is that Coach Al (Golden) has given us our own freedom. He gives us the tools and played to run. Then, he gives us the opportunity to make those plays and run the show back there. That's the biggest change for me. There's not as much stress with this is exactly what we have to do." Anderson, a fifth-round pick in 2022, has played one career defensive snap while establishing himself as the team's top special teamer. He has played in 24 total games, and Anderson has 18 total tackles in the NFL on special teams. Jules was an undrafted free agent last season who spent 2024 on the Bengals' practice squad. An interception last Sunday during practice with the second team opened some eyes and led to him getting more opportunities. "I don't care who you are, how you got here, I'll give you the same promise my coach gave me 15 years ago," safeties coach Jordan Kovacs said. "The best players will play. Every spot is open. Let's go compete and let's see how good we can get. Because competition is ultimately what's going to make us better players." Taylor also didn't rule out the Bengals adding a free-agent option at the safety position. "That's a group that we're looking to make sure we're deep enough there, so they're gonna continue to get a lot of opportunities," Taylor said. ___ AP NFL:https://apnews.com/hub/nfl

Ahead of summit with Trump, a look at Putin's notable meetings with 5 US presidentsNew Foto - Ahead of summit with Trump, a look at Putin's notable meetings with 5 US presidents

Vladimir Putin is no stranger to superpower summits. Over the decades, as president or prime minister, he's held high-stakes meetings with five American presidents. His encounter withDonald Trumpon Friday in Alaska will be the first of Trump's second term and maybe the most significant since theircontroversial2018 meeting in Helsinki, Finland. This time, war and peace are urgently at stake as Trump has made it a priority to end the war in Ukraine. Trump's Aug. 8 deadline for Putin to agree to a ceasefire with Ukraine or face severe sanctions has come and gone without any peace deal. MORE: Trump warns Russia of 'severe consequences' if Putin doesn't agree to stop war The expected one-on-one meeting in Alaska marks Putin's first trip to the U.S. since 2015 and hiseighth overallas president -- a post the former KGB officer has held since late 1999, apart from 2008-2012 when he served as prime minister. Although he's met with every U.S. president since Bill Clinton, the meetings have been less frequent in recent years as he's been considered something of an international pariah, following the Kremlin's illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014, military actions in Syria in 2015 and Russia's interference in the 2016 presidential election. No U.S. president hastraveled to Russiasince 2013, when Barack Obama attended the G20 economic summit in St. Petersburg. Here's a look at memorable moments between the Russian president and his American counterparts. The two leaders had previously met while Putin served as prime minister, though their first summit came as Clinton's presidency was coming to an end and the new Russian president was just coming into power. The two met in Moscow in June 2000, nearly a decade after the end of the Cold War, and largely discussed arms control. On his assessment of Putin, Clinton said at a press briefing, "I think he is fully capable of building a prosperous, strong Russia while preserving freedom and pluralism and the rule of law. It's a big challenge. I think he's fully capable of doing it." On Clinton, Putin called him a "very experienced politician." "In my mind, we've established now not only good business ties, but also personal relations. For me, President Clinton is a person who is a very comfortable and pleasant partner in negotiations," Putin said. Bush and Putin held their first summit in Slovenia in June 2001. Following two hours of meetings, Bush said it was an "important step in building a constructive, respectful relationship with Russia." When asked whether he could trust Russia, Bush famously said of Putin that he "looked the man in the eye" and "found him to be very straightforward and trustworthy." "I was able to get a sense of his soul; a man deeply committed to his country and the best interests of his country," Bush said. On their meeting, Putin said he had a "very interesting and positive" discussion with Bush, who "as a person who has studied history, proposed a very global, wide-scale approach and view to history." Bush would go on to meet with Putin in Russia multiple times throughout both terms of his presidency, including a 2002 visit to Moscow where they signed a treaty to reduce the number of nuclear warhead arsenals held by both countries. Putin also visited the U.S. several times, including traveling to Bush's ranch in Texas and family home in Kennebunkport, Maine, which often hosted heads of state during the Bush administration. Their relationship seemed to grow more strained, including following the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003, which Moscow opposed. During an informal meeting, the two had a more tense exchange during Bush's historic trip to Beijing for the 2008 Summer Olympics, where Bush confronted then-Prime Minister Putin about Russia's ongoing attack on its neighbor, Georgia. Putin continued to serve as prime minister during the first few years of Obama's presidency -- during which he and Obama met for the first time along with then-Russian President Dmitry Medvedev in Moscow in July 2009. During that visit, Obama said his interest was in dealing with his counterpart, though said he wanted to reach out to Putin "and all other influential sectors in Russian society so that I can get a full picture of the needs of the Russian people and the concerns of the Russian people." "Our interest is dealing with the Russian government as a whole in order to achieve the improved bilateral relationship that I think can be accomplished," Obama said. Putin returned to the presidency in 2012. A year later, the White Housecanceleda planned summit with Putin in Moscow, citing Russia's "disappointing decision" to grant asylum to national security leaker Edward Snowden and a lack of progress in the U.S.-Russia bilateral agenda. Russia's invasion and illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014 and support of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, whom the U.S. had called to be removed, continued to strain relations. Obama and Putin had theirfirst formal meeting in two yearsin September 2015 at the U.N. General Assembly in New York City, in what was Putin's last visit to the U.S. until the planned Alaska summit. MORE: NATO Secretary General Rutte says Trump-Putin summit is about 'testing Putin' Trump and Putin met for the first time as presidents in July 2017 during a G20 summit in Hamburg, Germany. Though one of their more notable summits came a year later, in Helsinki in July 2018, when they talked behind closed doors for nearly two hours. In an extraordinary press conference afterward, while standing next to Putin, Trumpseemed to acceptthe Russian president's denial of election interference over the findings of U.S. intelligence. (Earlier this month, Attorney General Pam Bondi ordered a Justice Department investigation into the Obama administration intelligence community's handling of claims Russia interfered in the 2016 election.) "[Putin] just said it's not Russia. I will say this. I don't see any reason why it would be," Trump said. "I have great confidence in my intelligence people, but I will tell you that President Putin was extremely strong and powerful in his denial today," he later said. Asked why Trump should believe Russia's denial of election interference, Putin said during the briefing, "You can trust no one," and called the U.S. intelligence agencies' findings "utter nonsense." He said he wanted Trump to win "because he talked about bringing the U.S.-Russia relationship back to normal." Following significant bipartisan criticism back home, Trump walked back his comments the next day, saying he misspoke and that he meant to say, "I don't see any reason why it wouldn't be Russia." The summit also drew concerns for the lack of aides or other government officials, only interpreters, in the room with Trump and Putin. Later that year, Trumpabruptly canceleda planned meeting with Putin on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Argentina, citing Russia's refusal to release Ukrainian Navy ships and sailors it seized near Crimea. Biden met with Putin once during his presidency, in Geneva in June 2021. He had called for thehigh-stakes meetingwith Putin, alarmed about ongoing Russian military aggression toward Ukraine. Biden said the summit was "positive" and that he "did what I came to do." Putin called the over three-hour talk "quite constructive," though he contended that Russia's military aggression toward Ukraine was not the business of the U.S. Less than a year later, in February 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine, a war that has been waged ever since.

Trump says it will be up to Ukraine to decide on territorial swapsNew Foto - Trump says it will be up to Ukraine to decide on territorial swaps

By Steve Holland ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE (Reuters) -U.S. President Donald Trump said he would not negotiate on behalf of Ukraine in his Friday meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin and would let Kyiv decide whether to engage in territorial swaps with Russia. Trump said his goal was to get the two sides to start a negotiation, with any territorial swaps to be addressed then. "They'll be discussed, but I've got to let Ukraine make that decision, and I think they'll make a proper decision. But I'm not here to negotiate for Ukraine, I'm here to get them at a table," Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One. Trump's remarks are likely to offer some assurance to Ukraine, which is worried that the U.S.-Russia talks could freeze the conflict at Ukraine's expense. Trump said the Russian offensive in Ukraine was likely aimed at helping to strengthen Putin's hand in any negotiations to end the war. "I think they're trying to negotiate. He's trying to set a stage. In his mind that helps him make a better deal. It actually hurts him, but in his mind that helps him make a better deal if they can continue the killing," he said. The U.S. president said he expected his meeting with Putin to produce results, given the stakes involved and weakness in the Russian economy. "He's a smart guy, been doing it for a long time but so have I ... we get along, there's a good respect level on both sides, and I think, you know, something's going to come of it," he said. Trump said it was a good sign that Putin was bringing business executives with him from Russia, but said no deals could be made until the war was settled. "I like that 'cause they want to do business, but they're not doing business until we get the war settled," he said. NFLPA lawyer placed on leave after her allegations led to FBI probe, per reportNew Foto - NFLPA lawyer placed on leave after her allegations led to FBI probe, per report

The latest twist in the drama that has consumed the NFL Players Association features a lawyer who reportedly squared off with former executive director Lloyd Howell and is now facing some charges herself. Heather McPhee, associate general counsel for the NFLPA since 2009, was placed on paid administrative leave Tuesday after multiple employees filed complaints against her with the union's human resources department, according toESPN's Don Van Natta Jr. and Jeff Passan. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] McPhee reportedly faces accusations of failing to follow supervisors' directions, bullying colleagues and disrupting the union's work environment. The decision to place her on leave reportedly comes months after her own allegations helped triggeran FBI investigation into the NFLPA, the MLBPA and their OneTeam Partners licensing company. Matt Curtin, the head of the NFLPA's licensing arm and a member of the OneTeam board, is among those who filed complaints against McPhee. There wereseveral other problems facing the NFLPAby the timeHowell resigned last month, but the only one that prompted action by federal authorities was the OneTeam matter. In June 2024, the eight-member board of directors, which included Howell, signed a resolution that could have personally entitled them to considerable compensation from the OneTeam partnership. McPhee reportedly wrote multiple memos suggesting the NFLPA could face legal jeopardy if it went through with the bonus plan and urged the union to investigate claims that the board members had allocated equity shares to themselves. The plan ultimately did not go through. PerThe Athletic, OneTeam brought in $101 million for the NFLPA alone from early 2024 into 2025. The NFLPA reportedly owns 44% of the licensing firm, with the MLBPA owning 22% and three other unions representing MLS, the USWNT and WNBA owning much smaller shares. Outside investors make up the remainder of the ownership. ESPN notes that McPhee has not been deemed a whistleblower in the FBI case, leaving her with fewer legal protections against any retaliation. The NFLPA has been operating under new leadership since Howell announced his resignation, withformer SAG-AFTRA executive director David White acting as interim head.

The first pitch before the Washington Nationals' game Thursday was a full circle moment for two Little League World Series opponents. The pitcher: Mo'ne Davis, one of the biggest viral sensations in the tournament's history. The catcher: Nationals outfielder Robert Hassell III, who faced Davis in 2014. And struck out against her. On his birthday. There were no hard feelings. That game made her the first female pitcher to earn a win in LLWS history. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Hassell even pops up by name in the old "SportsCenter" highlight reel, complete with narration by Stuart Scott and a tweet from Kevin Durant. Hassell was drafted in the first round of the MLB Draft six years later. Hespoke about the experience earlier this yearand remained impressed, noting he still follows her on Instagram: "It was crazy. She struck me out, it was on my birthday. Then I got a base hit off her. But yeah, the whole crowd screaming her name, we're really young, it was crazy, but it was really fun ... She was really good." For her part, Davis remembered her coach pointing out Hassell as a dangerous hitterwhen asked about him Thursday: "I remember before the game, going over the lineup with out coach, he's like, 'Yeah, so, they have this kid named Robert, we have to watch out for him. He's a really good hitter, he might be their best hitter, so just be careful, he bats at the top of the lineup.' I'm like, 'Alright, OK.' "He stands close to the plate, I was like, 'Alright, I gotta really lock in here.' I don't want to hit him, get him on base, give them any type of momentum. I was really feeling everything that game. I ended up striking him out which was pretty cool, so I have bragging rights right now. He can't get his redemption back from me." Now 24 years old, Davis was at Nationals Park in connection tothe tryouts for the Women's Pro Baseball Leaguescheduled to take place at the same stadium next week. Since the 2014 LLWS, she has released a memoir, played softball at Hampton University and graduated from Columbia University with a master's in sports management. As for Hassell, his bat made him a top 100 prospect in the minor leagues. He was among the many young players the San Diego Padres sent to Washington in the blockbuster Juan Soto trade in 2022. He made his MLB debut this season and entered Thursday slashing .250/.264/.356 with two homers in 106 plate appearances.

Barack Obama praises Texas Democrats as state legislature moves to end special session without passing new electoral mapsNew Foto - Barack Obama praises Texas Democrats as state legislature moves to end special session without passing new electoral maps

Texas lawmakers will adjourn their first special session without passing new congressional maps on Friday, though Governor Greg Abbott has said he will immediately call another session and Democratic lawmakers signaled they are likely to return to the state. Abbott has pledged he will call consecutive special sessions until Democrats have returned. More than 50 Democrats left the state last month in order to deny a quorum in the legislature after Republicans announced plans to redraw the state's congressional maps, at the request of Donald Trump, in order to gain five Republican seats. Gene Wu, the chair of the Texas Democratic caucus, said in a statement on Thursday that Democrats would return as long as the first special session adjourned on Friday and California introduced its own new congressional map to offset the gains by Republicans. California's governor, Gavin Newsom, announced on Thursday that its maps would be coming shortly. "Under the advice of legal counsel, Democrats must return to Texas to build a strong public legislative record for the upcoming legal battle against a map that violates both the current Voting Rights Act and the Constitution," the Texas Democratic caucus said in a statement. Former president Barack Obama spoke to the Texas Democrats via video on Thursday, praising them for fighting against the redistricting plan. He told them they should return to Texas "feeling invigorated" and with the knowledge that they helped lead what will be a long fight. Former attorney general Eric Holder also joined the call. "We can't let a systematic assault on democracy just happen and stand by and so because of your actions, because of your courage, what you've seen is California responding, other states looking at what they can do to offset this mid-decade gerrymandering," he said, according to ABC News. Republicans already represent voters in 25 of the state's 38 congressional districts. Abbott called a special session last month to redraw the map to add five Republican seats and the new map, unveiled at the end of July, would do just that. Republicans hold a three-seat majority in the US House and are seeking to add seats ahead of next year's midterm elections, when the president's party typically does not perform well. Texas Republicans have been trying to ratchet up the pressure on Democrats to return to the state, seeking to cut off fundingfor their travel and filing long-shot legal bids to have themremoved from office. The Texas effort comes as Newsomplans to push aheadwith an effort to redraw his state's congressional map to add five additional Democratic seats there. Newsom will need to get California voters to approve his proposal through a referendum this fall because California's constitution requires redistricting to be done through an independent redistricting commission. On Thursday, he called on state lawmakers to approve the ballot measure. Republicans are expected to push ahead with efforts to redraw maps to add seats in Ohio, Florida, Missouri and potentially Indiana.
