Ty Simpson can lead Alabama football to glory without being Mac JonesNew Foto - Ty Simpson can lead Alabama football to glory without being Mac Jones

Officially,Alabamasettled its quarterback competition on Monday, tapping Ty Simpson as its starter. Unofficially, this conclusion seemed inevitable for months. Simpson has thrown only 50 passes during a career that includes three seasons as a backup, but that's 47 more pass attempts than any other quarterback onAlabama's roster. When Alabama did not add a transfer quarterback in the winter free agency period, it signaled Simpson would make hisfirst career start in the opener against Florida State. Optimists will say Simpson could becomethe next Mac Jones, a backup turned star who threw for 4,500 yards in 2020. Sure, it's possible, and maybe I'll be selected as the next James Bond. By the time Jones became Alabama's full-time starter, he'd already proven himself after filling in as starter for an injured Tua Tagovailoa the previous season and delivering four standout performances. Simpson has neither Jones' experience nor his inimitable supporting cast that included DeVonta Smith, Najee Harris and John Metchie III to warrant 2020 comparisons. PATH TO PLAYOFF:Sign up for our college football newsletter Smarter comparisons would include Blake Sims and Jake Coker, who were longtime backups before starting for Alabama in their final seasons. Coker won a national championship as a steadyhanded guide for the 2015 Crimson Tide. He enjoyed the luxury of handing the ball to Derrick Henry 25-plus times per game. Unfortunately for Simpson, I don't see a future Heisman Trophy winner in his backfield, and Alabama's defense has not, for several years, played to the level it did in 2015. Still, if Simpson performs to the level Sims and Coker did as starters, that should allow Alabama to find a soft landing afterexperiencing turbulence, complete with a loss to Vanderbilt, in DeBoer's debut. Alabama quarterbacks have experienced a high floor of performance for the better part of two decades, so we must look elsewhere to produce a recent worst-case comparison for Simpson. Consider the case of Brock Vandagriff. Like Simpson, Vandagriff signed with an elite program as a five-star prospect. Vandagriff chose Georgia, and he failed to win competitions against JT Daniels and Stetson Bennett IV and later against Carson Beck. After three seasons as a seldom-used Georgia backup, Vandagriff finished his career last season starting for Kentucky, where he struggled. I view Simpson as neither Jones nor Vandagriff. He's something else. He's a bridge away from the Nick Saban era, a bridge that eventually will connect to Keelon Russell, a promising five-star freshman whobecame DeBoer's first quarterback signee at Alabama. There's optimism, there's pessimism, and there's realism. Simpson being a bridge seems most realistic. Bridge quarterbacks can become success stories. Again, I think of Coker, an effective bridge that took Alabama to the Jalen Hurts era. Optimists also would say Simpson fits DeBoer's system better than Jalen Milroe. Perhaps true, but DeBoer nonetheless chose Milroe as his starter last season, and Milroe's speed became a fallback plan for the offense when all else failed. Simpson moves well, but he doesn't sprint with Milroe's track-star pace. So, he'll need to be more efficient than Milroe. DeBoer, in the spring, said he desired a "playmaker," not "a game-manager" to emerge from the quarterback competition, and, on that note, offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb describes Simpson as "an incredible playmaker." In truth, Alabama needs a healthy blend of playmaking and efficiency. Milroe was a playmaker, and he performed at a Heisman level in Alabama's takedown of Georgia, but consistency eluded him in his lone season playing for DeBoer, and turnovers became an issue. He didn't receive enough support, either. Simpson should expect more help after the maturation of some young receivers and the arrival of Isaiah Horton, a transfer from Miami. Milroe could've used someone like Horton to help complement Ryan Williams and Germie Bernard. "We really did a great job hitting on Isaiah Horton, who physically has a presence, but he's really smooth,"DeBoer told me in April. If Simpson is an Alabama-caliber starting quarterback, then why didn't he start earlier in this career? That's the question I ask myself. Bryce Young initially blocked his path. No shame in that, but when Simpson later failed to beat out Milroe, I found it a bit unusual that he didn't transfer and start elsewhere. Simpson would tell you he stayed put because he belongs at Alabama. "I had no doubt where I wanted to be," even after Saban's retirement, Simpson told the Tuscaloosa News in January. I won't fault him for loyalty, and no one questions Arch Manning's ability just because he waited his turn behind Quinn Ewers. But, we saw more of Manning last season than we've seen of Simpson throughout his entire career. Simpson's ceiling remains a mystery, and how high you believe it extends depends on whether you identify as an optimist, a pessimist, or a realist. Premier League preview: Will Liverpool repeat or is this finally Arsenal's year?New Foto - Premier League preview: Will Liverpool repeat or is this finally Arsenal's year?

The 2025-26 Premier League season is almost upon us and there is so much intrigue as teams look to close the gap with reigning champions Liverpool and finish in the Champions League spots. With a record number of teams in European competitions, the strength of the Premier League is perhaps at its peak, and the promoted teams all look strong and prepared for the nine-month gauntlet that awaits from August until May. Let's take a look at the key storylines heading into the new season. After spending big on four new key signings this summer (and possibly adding striker Alexander Isak in the coming weeks for a British record transfer fee of over $150 million), reigning Premier League champions Liverpool have not stood still. But their expensive rebuild has shown signs of early growing pains. German playmaker Florian Wirtz is a generational talent and looks like a bargain, even for $133 million. Forward Hugo Ekitike is still raw but will score plenty. New full backs Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong are exciting and energetic. Yet the balance has been off in preseason and manager Arne Slot knows it. Liverpool will score in bunches but it's all about getting the balance right, especially in defense and out wide. With Trent Alexander-Arnold sold to Real Madrid and Andy Robertson now a backup, Liverpool's strength for so long has been out wide defensively. This season they'll have a new-look attacking line and be susceptible on the counter as new players figure out how to get the all-important balance right. That is the job for Slot and experienced leaders like Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah to sort out. Liverpool's title bid may get off to a slightly shaky start as they try to figure it all out. Add in the absolutelytragic loss of forward Diogo Jota this summerafter he was killed in a car crash and Liverpool have been working through a lot. But they will get there and the talent they have is undoubted. The big question: can all of their new attacking players play together from the start? Liverpool are still the favorites to win the title again, but there are plenty more questions than answers heading into the opening game. For so long Arsenal have wanted, and needed, a proper center forward to finish goal-scoring chances. Now they have it in Viktor Gyokeres. The Swedish striker buried a header in their final preseason game and you could see the cogs swirling around inside the heads of Arsenal fans. "Hang on, is this it!?" The comparisons to when Erling Haaland arrived at Manchester City are plentiful and although Gyokeres still has a long way to go to reach those levels, on a simplistic level this should work. Arsenal create so many chances, whip in so many crosses and they drew 14 games in the Premier League last season. Gyokeres' arrival will surely help them win more of those tight games and that will close the gap to Liverpool as the Gunners aim to avoid a fourth-straight second-place finish and finally win a trophy. At this point they will take the League Cup, FA Cup and of course a first-ever Champions League title. But after a strong summer of early spending in the transfer market, Arsenal have perhaps never been closer to winning the Premier League for the first time since 2004. It all hinges on Gyokeres finishing off the chances Bukayo Saka and Co. will put on a plate for him. Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim hit the reset button hard after a tough first eight months in charge. Last season was a disaster in the Premier League but United showed they could still rise to the occasion as they made it to the Europa League final where they lost to Tottenham. That probably did them a favor as they have no European action to worry about this season and Amorim can work longer and harder on the training ground with his squad. In preseason all the talk has been about a change in culture at United. They have moved on Marcus Rashford, while Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund are next, and a line has been drawn in the sand. This underachievement can't go on. United have added real quality and experience in attack with Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko coming in. Over the last 12 years since Sir Alex Ferguson retired, there have been so many false dawns about United rekindling their glory days. Amorim knows a top-six finish and a strong cup run is the very least United need to achieve this season if they're going to show people they're back on the right path. United have been going through this rebuild for most of the last decade but it still feels very similar to the New England Patriots' current painful rebuild after the glory days of Bill Belichick and Tom Brady. But there's hope that United can be competitive and if they can stay solid defensively they now have the right combination of players, and characters, in attack to win games. The culture is changing and Amorim's side have had a brilliant preseason. Can they keep it going amid a tough start to the season as they face all of Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea in their first five games? Chelsea have some serious momentum heading into the new season as Enzo Maresca's young side won the Club World Cup, unexpectedly, this summer and that has seen them grow massively in confidence. Cole Palmer is their star but new recruits Joao Pedro, Liam Delap and Jamie Gittens will give them an extra cutting edge and decisiveness in the final third. That's the thing Chelsea missed last season as Maresca's side dominated games but couldn't put teams away. They have the Champions League to look forward to too and there is no slowing down in signing new players as Xavi Simons, Alejandro Garnacho and others are linked with moves to Stamford Bridge. Chelsea's huge squad was the main reason they could win the Club World Cup. If Maresca can balance and rotate well, watch out. Record nine Premier League teams will play in Europe Get used to plenty of Premier League teams rotating their lineups as a record nine teams will compete in European competitions this season. Six teams are in the Champions League with Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea and Newcastle joined by Tottenham Hotspur courtesy of the latter winning the Europa League last season. Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest will be in the Europa League and Crystal Palace are in the Conference League. Having this many teams in Europe will be intriguing as squads will be stretched to their limits, especially in the autumn and winter months. Americans own 11 teams There are now 11 teams out of the 20 in the Premier League that are either fully or part-owned by Americans. Two newly-promoted teams in Leeds United and Burnley are owned by U.S. based groups and with the duo of Birmingham City (Tom Brady is involved) and Wrexham (Ryan Reynolds and Co.) in the second-tier also owned by Americans and pushing hard for promotion to the Premier League this season, we could soon see close to 66 percent of the Premier League owned by U.S. investors. Manchester City continues to wait for a verdict After winning four-straight titles, Pep Guardiola and Manchester City rallied to finish third place last season as new signings in January kicked them on. City have added the likes of Ait-Nouri, Cherki and Reijnders in the summer, and even if they aren't favorites for the title, they will be up there. But there is still plenty of doubt about their future as the verdict regarding the 115 charges from the Premier League against them (the charges are for a period from 2009 until 2018) still loom. Nobody knows exactly what will happen, and when, as City are steadfast in their claim that they are innocent. On the pitch City will look to get back to being title contenders and they should be up there. Off the pitch, after many years of uncertainty, it's still a mystery what will happen next. Promoted clubs can buck instant relegation trend Leeds have spent a lot, and well, while Burnley have also been impressive with the transfers they've made. But Sunderland have perhaps surprised everyone the most. They've been able to sign important players like Granit Xhaka and Simon Adingra and the three new teams look set to try and stop the rot for newly-promoted clubs. In each of the last two years, all three promoted clubs have been instantly relegated and it hasn't been particularly competitive as the gap between the Premier League and second-tier grows bigger. But there is a real hope that these three have learned from the mistakes of others, while the likes of Brentford, Bournemouth and Wolves have lost some of their best players this summer and the relegation scrap should be a lot closer.

PIRAEUS, Greece (AP) — Riot police at Greece's largest port cordoned off an area around an Israeli cruise ship that arrived early Thursday to prevent several hundred protesters from approaching the vessel. Protests have been held at Greek islands and mainland ports along the route of theCrown Iris, several of which have led to clashes with police. At the port of Piraeus, near Athens, on Thursday demonstrators held flares and waved Palestinian flags behind a cordon formed with riot police buses. Protest organizers, citing online posts from travelers, said off-duty Israeli soldiers were among the passengers. "They are unwanted here and have no business being here," protest organizer Markos Bekris said. "The blood of innocent people is on their hands, and we should not welcome them." Greeceis a popular holiday destination for Israelis. But theongoing war in Gaza— and global attention on the widespread destruction and severe food shortages — has triggered hundreds of anti-Israel protests in Athens and other Greek cities, as well as a political confrontation. Left-wing opposition parties are calling on the conservative government to halt commercial and broad military cooperation with Israel.

UK growth slows in second quarter but comes in higher than expectedNew Foto - UK growth slows in second quarter but comes in higher than expected

LONDON (AP) — Britain's economy slowed down during the second quarter of the year in the face of higher taxes on businesses and globaltariffuncertainties, but growth came in higher than anticipated, official figures showed Thursday. The Office for National Statistics said output expanded by 0.3% during the second quarter from the previous three-month period, largely as a result of a strong performance in June. Though that was lower than the 0.7% increase in the first quarter of the year, it was ahead of market expectations of only a 0.1% rise. The bigger than expected increase will be welcome news to the Labour government, which has made improving growth its number one priority since it returned to power in July 2024. Higher growth will also bolster public finances as it leads to higher tax revenues. If growth continues to beat expectations in coming months, Treasury chief Rachel Reeves will be under less pressure to deliver another big tax-raising budget this fall. Reeves said Thursday's figures were "positive" but added that there is "more to do" to drive growth in the economy. The British economy, the sixth-largest in the world, has underperformed its long-run average since the global financial crisis of 2008-9. Critics say Reeves is partly responsible for much of the gloomy economic news since Labour returned to power after 14 years, because she was overly downbeat when taking on her role and hasincreased taxes, particularly on businesses.

Ohtani pitches into 5th inning and triples, but O'Hoppe spurs Angels past Dodgers 6-5 for sweepNew Foto - Ohtani pitches into 5th inning and triples, but O'Hoppe spurs Angels past Dodgers 6-5 for sweep

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Shohei Ohtani yielded four runs on five hits while pitching a season-high 4 1/3 innings, but Logan O'Hoppe delivered a two-run single in the eighth inning and the Los Angeles Angels swept the season Freeway Series with a 6-5 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday night. Ohtani fanned Mike Trout twice among his seven strikeouts. He also tripled and scored in the first inning, but struck out in his final three at-bats. Will Smith hit a two-run homer and Mookie Betts had two RBI singles for the defending World Series champion Dodgers, who have lost four straight. They've fallen into second place in the NL West behind the San Diego Padres, who arrive at Dodger Stadium on Friday for a weekend series. The sub-.500 Angels improbably swept both three-game series against the Dodgers this season. They've won a franchise-record seven straight over their crosstown rivals. Ohtani mostly looked sharp in his first trip to the Angel Stadium mound since he left it with what turned out to be a torn elbow ligament in August 2023. He gave up a homer to Taylor Ward in the second, but settled in until the fifth. Ohtani left with a 5-4 lead, and the Dodgers' beleaguered bullpen nearly made it stand up despite having five high-leverage arms on the injured list. One inning earlier, Angels rookie Bryce Teodosio robbed Andy Pages of a homer with a leaping catch in right-center. Brock Burke (6-1) pitched the eighth, and Kenley Jansen got his 23rd save. Key moment After the Angels loaded the bases in the eighth against Justin Wrobleski (4-4) and Edgardo Henriquez, O'Hoppe put the Angels ahead with his clutch single. Key stat Ohtani has 15 strikeouts over his last 8 1/3 innings. Up next Clayton Kershaw (6-2, 3.14 ERA) seems likely to take the mound Friday against San Diego. Yusei Kikuchi (6-7, 3.37) will start Friday in West Sacramento for the Angels. ___ AP MLB:https://apnews.com/MLB

LONDON (AP) — Tottenham has slammed the "cowards" who racially abused French forward Mathys Tel after the team'sloss to Paris Saint-Germainin the UEFA Super Cup after a penalty shootout. The 20-year-old Tel, who is Black, was one of two Tottenham players who failed to convert their penalties as they lost the shootout 4-3 to PSG after a 2-2 draw. "We are disgusted at the racial abuse that Mathys Tel has received on social media following last night's UEFA Super Cup defeat," Tottenham said in a statement. "Mathys showed bravery and courage to step forward and take a penalty, yet those who abuse him are nothing but cowards — hiding behind anonymous user names and profiles to spout their abhorrent views." Tottenham said the club will work with the authorities and social media platforms to take "the strongest possible action against any individual we are able to identify." "We stand with you, Mathys," Spurs added. Tel, who joined the team on a permanent basis from Bayern Munich in the offseason after a loan spell last season, went on as a substitute in the 79th minute when Tottenham was 2-0 ahead. Federal police activity continues to be felt in nation's capitalNew Foto - Federal police activity continues to be felt in nation's capital

Federal law enforcement's presence in Washington, DC, continued to be felt Wednesday as President Donald Trump'stakeover of the city's policeentered its third night, the president's latest move in his effort to shape the city and its institutions. Late Wednesday evening, DC police and federal agents set up a traffic checkpoint along the city's busy 14th Street corridor, an area popular for its bars and restaurants. CNN's team at the scene observed multiple cars being pulled over temporarily, and at least one person being handcuffed and taken away by law enforcement. The operation drew visible outrage from members of the local community, with people lining both sides of 14th Street and loudly cursing at the officers. The outrage lasted for about two hours, with people yelling phrases like "Shame," "You are the criminals" and "Get the f**k out of here" at the officers. Others yelled, "Take off your mask!" at some of the federal agents who were wearing masks to cover their faces. While the gathering crowd was very loud, they remained peaceful and stayed on the sidewalks. CNN did not observe any physical confrontation between protestors and law enforcement. In addition to DC Police, who made up the bulk of the more than one dozen officers at the checkpoint, CNN observed agents with Homeland Security Investigations, a component of the Department of Homeland Security, and also with Enforcement and Removal Operations, a division of ICE. National Guard troops were not present at the checkpoint Wednesday night. A White House official told CNN earlier in the day the National Guard's presence in the capital would grow Wednesday evening, but as of midnight into Thursday, CNN had not observed a significantly higher presence of National Guardsmen in high-traffic areas of the city. The guard began to appear in the capital city on Tuesday with five armored personnel carriers notably parked near the Washington Monument, and the official said a "significantly higher" National Guard presence is expected to be on the ground later in the day. The White House official also said the guard's presence would change from a nighttime posture to a 24/7 presence beginning in the evening. A National Guard spokesperson told CNN that as of Wednesday evening, no request had been made for the Guardsmen mobilized in the city to carry their weapons, though that could change depending on the orders they're given. At the 14th Street checkpoint, a commander with DC police, who did not give his name and did not want to go on camera, said that the checkpoint was a "routine" operation which the Metropolitan Police Department conducts in that area. That claim was vehemently disputed by residents who spoke to CNN. "We never have seen this," said one woman who said she's lived in the neighborhood for 17 years. "Even during the worst times of Covid, when crime was really bad, this did not even happen then," she said. Mara Lasko, a local resident who held up a sign saying "ICE" to warn motorists of the checkpoint, told CNN, "I've lived in DC for 15 years, and, like, I've seen them stop people before but not like this. This is crazy." Asked if she thought the increased federal law enforcement presence in Washington could make residents safer, Lasko said "No, I think it just makes people angrier. And I don't think they're actually doing anything productive to make our city a safer place." The National Guard's involvement in Trump's DC crackdown could evolve depending on how they are ordered to support law enforcement. The Army said in a Monday statement the guard will be providing administrative and logistical support and back up other law enforcement officers patrolling the city. "The National Guard is not arresting people," a White House official told CNN. The guard members are there to "create a safe environment for other officers," the official said. On Thursday, more guardsmen are expected to be providing support to law enforcement and establishing a physical presence at metro stations and national memorials and monuments, the National Guard spokesperson said, similar to the presence seen near the Washington Monument on Tuesday night. The spokesperson also said that there has not been any request made as of Wednesday evening for National Guardsmen to assist law enforcement by making arrests or detaining individuals. Trump announced Monday he wastaking over the city's police departmentand ordering federal law enforcement to begin patrolling the city. Trump cited high-crime rates though city statistics show violent crime has dropped over the past two years after peaking in 2023. The White House said there were 43 arrests in DC on Tuesday night. A White House official said those arrests were all made by the new task force set up as part of the federal surge efforts. The task force includes both federal law enforcement and local DC police officers. The president first mobilized federal law enforcement to patrol the city last week, following the assault of a former Department of Government Efficiency stafferin an attempted carjacking. Since that crackdown began Thursday, federal law enforcement made 103 arrests, the White House said. The city averaged about 55 adult arrests per day in 2024, according to data kept by the city's police department. DC Mayor Muriel Bowser said she wants to make sure the federal law enforcement surge is useful to the city and implored residents to "stay safe" and "be smart." "I know people have democracy concerns and they want to express themselves, and this is still America," Bowser said on Fox 5's "Good Day DC." "This is still our nation's capital, and I just encourage everybody to be peaceful, follow the law and go about your daily lives." At a Kennedy Center event Wednesday, Trump suggested he'll ask Congress to extend federalization of the city's police force beyond 30 days. "If it's a national emergency, we can do it without Congress, but we expect to be — before Congress very quickly," Trump said. "And again, we think the Democrats will not do anything to stop crime, but we think the Republicans will do it almost unanimously." CNN's Haley Britzky, Holmes Lybrand and Shania Shelton contributed to this report. For more CNN news and newsletters create an account atCNN.com
