Shohei Ohtani had an adventurous few innings in theLos Angeles Dodgers'7-6 extra-innings lossto theAngelsin Anaheim on Tuesday, Aug. 12. In the sixth inning, Ohtani hit into a triple play. Three innings later, Ohtani hit a go-ahead home run, his 43rd of the season. With Miguel Rojas on second base and Dalton Rushing on first, Ohtani hit a liner up the middle that shortstop Zach Neto snagged. Neto then forced out Rojas at second and threw to first base to catch Rushing scrambling back to the bag. The third triple play of the 2025 season was the Angels' first triple play since Aug. 18, 2023 and the eighth in franchise history. With the score tied at 5-5 entering the ninth inning, Ohtani led off the inning with a home run off of Angels closer (and former Dodger) Kenley Jansen. Ohtani has hit home runs in four consecutive games. The Dodgers called on Alex Vesia to close out the game, but a bases-loaded sacrifice fly by Nolan Schanuel scored Luis Rengifo to tie up the game. The Angels held the Dodgers scoreless in the top of the 10th inning, and then won the game when Jo Adell's single scored the "ghost runner" Taylor Ward. Ohtani takes the mound Wednesday as the Dodgers will look to avoid a series sweep against the Angels. A three-game losing streak by the Dodgers has allowed theSan Diego Padresto move intoa first-place tieatop the NL West. The Dodgers host the Padres for a three-game series this weekend. Israel says Gazans free to exit while Hamas attends Cairo ceasefire talksNew Foto - Israel says Gazans free to exit while Hamas attends Cairo ceasefire talks

By Nidal al-Mughrabi and Emily Rose CAIRO/JERUSALEM (Reuters) -Militant group Hamas' chief negotiator held talks with Egyptian mediators over a potential ceasefire in the Gaza war on Wednesday while Israel struck the territory's main city prior to a planned takeover and again invited Palestinians to leave. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated an idea - also enthusiastically floated by U.S. President Donald Trump - that Palestinians should simply leave the enclave housing more than 2 million people after nearly two years of conflict. "They're not being pushed out, they'll be allowed to exit," he told Israeli television channel i24NEWS. "All those who are concerned for the Palestinians and say they want to help the Palestinians should open their gates and stop lecturing us." Arabs and many world leaders are aghast at the idea of displacing the Gaza population, which Palestinians say would be like another "Nakba" (catastrophe) when hundreds of thousands fled or were forced out during a 1948 war. Israel's planned re-seizure of Gaza City - which it took in the early days of the war before withdrawing - is probably weeks away, officials say. That means a ceasefire is still possible though talks have been floundering and conflict still rages. Israeli planes and tanks bombed eastern areas of Gaza City heavily, residents said, with many homes destroyed in the Zeitoun and Shejaia neighbourhoods overnight. Al-Ahli hospital said 12 people were killed in an airstrike on a home in Zeitoun. Tanks also destroyed several houses in the east of Khan Younis in south Gaza too, while in the centre Israeli gunfire killed nine aid-seekers in two separate incidents, Palestinian medics said. Israel's military did not comment. Hamas chief negotiator Khalil Al-Hayya's meetings with Egyptian officials in Cairo on Wednesday were to focus on stopping the war, delivering aid and "ending the suffering of our people in Gaza," Hamas official Taher al-Nono said in a statement. CEASEFIRE POSSIBILITIES Egyptian security sources said the talks would also discuss the possibility of a comprehensive ceasefire that would see Hamas relinquish governance in Gaza and concede its weapons. A Hamas official told Reuters the group was open to all ideas if Israel pulls out. However, "Laying down arms before the occupation is dismissed is impossible," the official, who asked not to be named, told Reuters. Netanyahu's plan to expand military control over Gaza, which Israeli sources said could be launched in October, has heightened global outcry over the widespread devastation, displacement and hunger in the enclave. About half of Gaza's residents live in the Gaza City area. Foreign ministers of 24 countries, including Britain, Canada, Australia, France and Japan, said this week the humanitarian crisis in Gaza had reached "unimaginable levels" and urged Israel to allow unrestricted aid. Israel denies responsibility for hunger, accusing Hamas of stealing aid. It says it has taken steps to increase deliveries, including daily combat pauses in some areas and protected routes for aid convoys. The Israeli military on Wednesday said that nearly 320 trucks entered Gaza through the Kerem Shalom and Zikim crossings and that a further nearly 320 trucks were collected and distributed by the U.N. and international organizations in the past 24 hours along with three tankers of fuel and 97 pallets of air-dropped aid. The United Nations and Palestinians say aid entering Gaza remains far from sufficient. The war began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas-led militants stormed into southern Israel, killing 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages, according to Israeli figures. Israel's offensive against Hamas in Gaza since then has killed more than 61,000 Palestinians, according to local health officials. Myanmar military chief calls for heightened security ahead of electionNew Foto - Myanmar military chief calls for heightened security ahead of election

(Reuters) -Myanmar's military chief has called for increased security for political party members and candidates as a newly formed interim government proceeds with a planned election in December and January that has been dismissed in the West as a sham. Min Aung Hlaing, who is also the war-torn country's acting president, asked authorities to take measures for protecting politicians and voters, while warning of a rise in attacks on civil servants in the run up to the polls, the Global New Light of Myanmar newspaper reported on Wednesday. "The Senior General highlighted that the election must be held without fail," the state-run publication said, referring to comments made by Min Aung Hlaing at the first meeting of a new commission formed to hold the polls. With opposition groups either barred from running or refusing to take part, the planned election has been dismissed by Western governments as a move to entrench the generals' power and is expected to be dominated by proxies of the military. Military-backed authorities last year held a nationwide census in an effort to create voter rolls but were only to able to conduct on-ground surveys in 145 out of Myanmar's 330 townships. Myanmar's military this month nominally transferred power to a civilian-led interim administration to conduct the election, four years after Min Aung Hlaing led a coup that unseated an the elected civilian government of Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi. The takeover triggered widespread protests and eventually sparked a civil war, where an array of established ethnic armies and newly-formed armed groups are battling the well-armed military on multiple frontlines. In Tuesday's meeting in the capital Naypyitaw, officials reviewed military operations in preparation of the polls and reinforcing security through the formation of "people's security" groups, the newspaper said. A military-led council last month also introduced new electoral laws aimed at improving security, containing punishments ranging from a minimum of three years in prison to the death penalty. ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Shohei Ohtani lined into a triple play in the sixth inning and hit a tiebreaking homer in the ninth, but the Los Angeles Angels rallied for a 7-6 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Jo Adell's walkoff single in the 10th on Tuesday night. The defending World Series champion Dodgers fell into a first-place tie with San Diego atop the NL West after their third consecutive loss. Ohtani put the Dodgers up 6-5 when he homered in his fourth consecutive game, crushing a cutter from Kenley Jansen for his NL-leading 43rd. Zelenskyy to visit Berlin for meetings ahead of Trump-Putin summitNew Foto - Zelenskyy to visit Berlin for meetings ahead of Trump-Putin summit

BERLIN (AP) — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will visit Berlin on Wednesday to join German Chancellor Friedrich Merz for talks with European and U.S. leaders ahead of the Trump-Putin summit later this week, the German government said. Merz has convened a series of virtual meetings on Wednesday in an attempt to have the voice of European and Ukraine's leaders heard ahead of a summit that they have been sidelined from. Zelenskyy is due to meet with European leaders first, in preparation for a virtual call with U.S. PresidentDonald Trumpand Vice President JD Vance about an hour later. A call between leaders of countries involved in the "coalition of the willing" — those who are prepared to help police any future peace agreement between Moscow and Kyiv — will take place last. On Wednesday, Merz pledged to help Ukraine develop its own long-range missile systems that would be free of any Western-imposed limitations on their use and targets as the Kyiv government fights to repelRussia's invasion. Zelenskyy last visited Berlin in late May. The stakes for Europe Trump has said he wants to see whether Russian President Vladimir Putin is serious about endingthe war, now in its fourth year, describing Friday's summit as "a feel-out meeting" where he can assess the Russian leader's intentions. Yet Trump has disappointed allies in Europe by saying Ukraine will have to give up some Russian-held territory. He has also said Russia must acceptland swaps, although it was unclear what Putin might be expected to surrender. European allies havepushed for Ukraine's involvementin any peace talks, fearful that discussions that exclude Kyiv could otherwise favor Moscow. Trump on Monday ducked repeated chances to say that he would push for Zelenskyy to take part in his discussions with Putin, and was dismissive of Zelenskyy and his need to be part of an effort to seek peace. Trump said that following Friday's summit, a meeting between the Russian and Ukrainian leaders could be arranged, or that it could also be a meeting with "Putin and Zelenskyy and me." The Europeans and Ukraine are wary that Putin, who has waged the biggest land war in Europe since 1945 and usedRussia's energy mightto try to intimidate the European Union, might secure favorable concessions and set the outlines of a peace deal without them. The overarching fear of many European countries is that Putin will set his sights on one of them next if he wins in Ukraine. Land concessions a non-starter for Kyiv Zelenskyy said Tuesday thatPutinwants Ukraine to withdraw from the remaining 30% of the Donetsk region that it still controls as part ofa ceasefire deal, a proposal the leader categorically rejected. Zelenskyyreiterated that Ukraine would not give up any territory it controls, saying thatwould be unconstitutionaland would serve only as a springboard for a future Russian invasion. He saiddiplomatic discussions led by the U.S.focusing on ending the war have not addressed key Ukrainian demands, including security guarantees to prevent future Russian aggression and including Europe in negotiations. Three weeks after Trump returned to office, his administration took the leverage of Ukraine's NATO membershipoff the table— something that Putin has demanded — and signaled that the EU and Ukraine must handle security in Europe now while America focuses its attention elsewhere. Trump has also routinely threatened and cajoled his NATO allies overdefense spending, and has shown little mercy in trade talks byhiking tariffson most EU imports to 15%, ostensibly for U.S. national security reasons. Senior EU officials believe that Trump may be satisfied with simply securing a ceasefire in Ukraine, and is probably more interested in broader U.S. geostrategic interests and great power politics, aiming to ramp up business with Russia and rehabilitate Putin. ___ Cook reported from Brussels.
