Italian orienteering athlete Mattia Debertolis has died after collapsing at the World Games, organizers said on Tuesday. In ajoint statementfrom the International World Games Association, the local organizing committee (LOC) and the International Orienteering Federation (IOF), the World Games said that the 29-year-old was found unconscious during the men's middle-distance race in the orienteering competition on August 8 in Chengdu, China. Although the Italian was rushed to hospital where he received immediate medical care, he passed away on Tuesday. The World Games statement said that they are "struck by this tragedy and extend their heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the athlete and the whole Orienteering Community. Our thoughts are with those touched by this event." The statement did not give a cause of death. Debertolis was part of the Italian Orienteering Federation's (FISO) team at the 2025 World Games. Orienteering is a sport where athletes race across an unfamiliar terrain with the use of a map and a compass. The sport challenges participants' ability to problem solve and navigate outdoor challenges, all against the clock. The IOF separately expressed their condolences to Debertolis' family and friends. "I am not able to adequately describe in words the unfathomable dept of sadness in this tragic loss of life. Our thoughts are with all who mourn Mattia. I encourage the global orienteering community to honor his memory," IOF president Tom Hollowellsaid. According to FISO, the mountain bike orienteering races being held in Poland will see the awards ceremony with flags at half-mast to honor Debertolis. Debertolis had been a mainstay in Italy's national orienteering team for years, competing in multiple World Championships and World Cups. Participating in Italy's fifth-place finish at the World Cup Final 2022 Relay is one of Debertolis' career achievements on the international circuit. Born in the Primiero valley in Italy, Debertolis participated in orienteering, cross-country skiing and soccer as a youth, but his love for navigating meant he chose to compete in elite orienteering. Away from competing, Debertolis was also trained as a civil engineer. He was studying for a PhD at the University of Stockholm, where he lived. 5 dark horse college football teams that could sneak their way into the national championship conversationNew Foto - 5 dark horse college football teams that could sneak their way into the national championship conversation

Could a team outside the preseason top 10 win the national title? The odds of someone coming out of (relative) obscurity to win theCollege Football Playoffare pretty low, but the 12-team playoff gives more teams the opportunity for a dream season. Here are five teams that can't be considered favorites for the national championship but have a small chance of making a title run. Odds to win national championship:200-1 College Football Playoff odds:+500 The path to the Big Ten title game and potential playoff magic is a lot more plausible than you think for Illinois. The Illini got a good schedule draw by avoiding Penn State, Oregon and Michigan and hosting Ohio State on Oct. 11. Games against USC, at Indiana and at Washington aren't exactly easy, but Illinois shouldn't be overmatched in any of them. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] The Illini are one of the most experienced teams in college football after a 10-3 season in 2024. The defense's top five tacklers are back, including edge rusher Gabe Jacas. He had eight sacks. That side of the ball gave up eight points fewer per game than it did in 2024. If Luke Altmyer takes another step forward as a passer, Illinois could be cooking with gas. Altmyer completed 61% of his passes for 2,717 yards and 22 TDs in 2024. The Illini do have to replace their top two receivers, but transfer Hudson Clement could step in and play a big role. Illinois' odds reflect that they're a long shot to win the title. But the Illini would have been in playoff contention a year ago with just one more regular-season win. Odds to win national championship:30-1 College Football Playoff odds:+200 A win over Notre Dame in Week 1 could be the jumpstart Miami needs for a special season. The Hurricanes are still looking for their first College Football Playoff appearance ever. Why not 2025? A healthy Carson Beck could easily replicate his 2023 season at Georgia provided that Miami has adequately replenished its receiving corps. Even if the passing game takes a bit to get going, a strong offensive line should help a lot. The defense could improve with better health and transfer portal additions and allow fewer than 20 points per game for the first time since 2018 last season. A manageable ACC schedule sets up well for the Hurricanes to get into the conference title game and position themselves for a first-round bye. Odds to win national championship:50-1 College Football Playoff odds:+500 The odds of Oklahoma going undefeated are extremely, extremely low. But one of the toughest schedules in the country could set the Sooners up well for a playoff road. And getting through that schedule with two or fewer losses means Oklahoma will be a high playoff seed. The defense brings back eight starters after giving up just 318 yards a game in 2024. Simply being as good as it was a season ago should be enough to make Oklahoma a playoff-caliber team with an improved offense. And that offensive improvement is what will determine Oklahoma's success. If new offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle and quarterback John Mateer can continue the production they put up at Washington State, Oklahoma is cooking with gas. Mateer had 44 total TDs in 2024 and the offense also adds former Cal running back Jaydn Ott. There are a lot of ways that Oklahoma's season can go in 2025, but there's a very high ceiling here. Odds to win national championship:100-1 College Football Playoff odds:+400 Texas Tech's case for winning the national title hinges on whether it hit the transfer portal lottery. You can't win the lottery unless you buy a ticket. And Tech spent a ton in the portal. The Red Raiders spent millions in NIL money to bring in players like CB Tarrion Grant (Purdue), OT Hunter Zambrano (Illinois State) and LB David Bailey (Stanford). Wide receiver Micah Hudson also returned after briefly transferring to Texas A&M. The influx of talent could propel the Red Raiders to the top of a wide-open Big 12. Especially with another big season from QB Behren Morton. He threw for over 3,300 yards and 27 TDs in 2024. With Caleb Douglas and Coy Eakin back, Morton's numbers could even get better. But for Tech's transfer movement to pay off, the defense has to get better. That was a big goal of the offseason spending. The Red Raiders can't allow 35 points per game again and have any hope of being a contender. Odds to win national championship:125-1 College Football Playoff odds:+500 Is it as simple as better quarterback play for Utah to challenge for the national title? It'll probably take more than that, but it would go a long way. Utah quarterbacks threw for fewer than 200 yards per game and completed just 56% of their passes in 2024. Enter Devon Dampier, who threw for nearly 2,800 yards and rushed for 1,166 yards and 19 scores at New Mexico a season ago. Dampier should be a massive upgrade for a Utah offense that will likely resemble the scheme he ran in 2024. Former New Mexico offensive coordinator Jason Beck is now calling plays for the Utes. The defense brings back three of its top four tacklers and is always excellent under Kyle Whittingham and Morgan Scalley. Texas Tech, Arizona State and Kansas State all visit Salt Lake City, too. You don't have to squint too hard to see how this could be a bounce-back season in a big way and a fitting sendoff for Whittingham if he decides to retire.

Think it's hard working for Trump? Try running the DEA and the DC policeNew Foto - Think it's hard working for Trump? Try running the DEA and the DC police

WASHINGTON – Working for the famously impatient PresidentDonald Trumpin one top job is hard enough. Imagine the uncomfortable position Trump's new interim federal police commissioner finds himself in. As part of his extraordinary Aug. 11federal takeover of law enforcementin the nation's capital, Trump tapped his newly confirmed Drug Enforcement Administration chief Terrance "Terry" Cole to also head one of the nation's largest andmost dysfunctional police departmentsas part of a broader Justice Department takeover. All eyes will be on Cole as he tries to deliver on Trump's promise to sharply and immediately reduce violent crime. More:Trump says Washington needs National Guard protection. Police data says crime is down. Cole justtook over at DEA on July 23after his Senate confirmation and overseesa staff of 10,000 agentsand other personnel. But now Cole also will be taking over the top job at the Metropolitan Police Department at the personal direction of a man who made a name for himself by firing people for even the most minor screw-ups. In the same breath as telling Cole about his new position, in fact, Trump described him on Aug. 11 as "our new DEA administrator, who's one of the top in the country." "He better be," Trump added, looking at his new appointee. "Terry, if you're not, I gotta get rid of you so fast." More:'Move Out, Immediately:' Trump's vision for ridding DC streets of homeless Cole is likely to face stiff opposition from Washington officials, including its city council and federal delegate,Eleanor Holmes Norton. It was unclear how the police rank and file and the MPD's police union would respond to being run by the Trump administration. "We completely agree with the President that crime in the District of Columbia is out of control and something needs to be done with it," union chiefGregg Pembertontold Fox News. More:Trump says Washington is unsafe, but the data tells a more nuanced story Democratic lawmakers in Congress also criticized Trump's takeover of the MPD and his decision to send National Guard troops into the city to help reduce crime rates that DOJ itself said recentlywere at a 30-year low. Cole will also have to deliver results for Attorney GeneralPam Bondi, who Trump put in charge overall of the DOJ takeover. And he'll have another direct boss in U.S. MarshalGadyaces "Gady" Serralta, who Bondi said will be "supervising command and control of the entire operation" under her and Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche. Cole does have some experience working with local law enforcement and in juggling a lot of responsibilities. From 2023 to earlier this year, he served as Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin's secretary of Public Safety and Homeland Security. In that role, he oversaw11 state public safety agenciescomprising more than 19,000 employees and managing an annual budget of $5.7 billion. At DEA, one of Cole's highest priorities is to reduce drug-fueled violence in America's most affected cities through expanded partnerships with state and local law enforcement, according to the DEA's news release following his confirmation. Cole was praised by Trump and Patel on Monday for an interagency operation in Northern Virginia between the FBI and local authorities that resulted in the arrest of 545 people. "What are we going to bring to DC? What we did in Northern Virginia, thanks to Terry Cole and Governor Youngkin and the team," FBI DirectorKash Pateltold reporters. "We said, let's let good cops be cops. Let's get them the intelligence and what they need, and let's get the red tape out of their way, and let's get DOJ partnered up with us to bring great prosecutions," Patel said. "And that's exactly what we did." Before his stint in Virginia, Cole was a respected 22-year career agent and supervisor at the DEA, where he served in Oklahoma, New York and Washington – as well as in Colombia, Afghanistan and the Middle East. Before retiring in 2020, Cole served as DEA's acting regional director of Mexico, Canada and Central America. He also served as a police officer in New York state. Michael Braun, one of Cole's former DEA colleagues, said he was "a bit surprised" at the announcement but that Cole is up to the job. "I know Terry very well, and the guy's quite capable of handling DEA as well as the DC Police Department," Braun, the former DEA chief of operations. "I mean, look, he's got a command staff in place at the DC police department and he's got his command staff in place at DEA. So he's going to have his hands full," Braun said. "But I have all the confidence in the world that he can do it." But reducing crime in DC will be just one of Cole's assignments. Another will be managing Trump's expectations. And the president suggested he wants Cole to also tackle the thorny issues of wokeness and culture wars at a police force with a proud history of Black leadership. Looking at Cole, Trump told him to be "tough" on the police force. "You have a lot of good people. You have people that shouldn't be there. … They got in there because of woke," Trump said. "But you have a lot of great police and those people are the ones that want to help you." Gregg Pemberton, chairman of the DC Police Union, appeared to welcome the move. "We completely agree with the President that crime in the District of Columbia is out of control. Something needs to be done with it," Pemberton saidin an appearance on Fox News. The union chief said that in 2020, the DC City Council passed "an enormous amount of legislation" that exposed officers to administrative, civil and even criminal liability, "even when they do their jobs properly." As a result, the department now has 3,180 sworn police officers, down 800 from its authorized strength of 4000. "So the fact that we need help from federal law enforcement and maybe even the National Guard shouldn't come as a surprise," Pemberton said. But, Pemberton added, "to make sure that it doesn't ebb and flow, and that the feds come in and we lower crime, and then they leave and we're left holding the bag, it's very important that people know that there is underlying legislation that needs to be corrected so that we can actually properly staff this police department in order to properly police the city." GOP mocks Democrats with memo about wildly unpopular 'Project 2026' goals, Dems shoot backNew Foto - GOP mocks Democrats with memo about wildly unpopular 'Project 2026' goals, Dems shoot back

FIRST ON FOX: With an eye to next year's Midterm Elections, theNational Republican Congressional Campaign Committee(NRCC) is mocking its Democratic counterpart and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries for advancing "wildly unpopular" policy proposals as part of their "Project 2026" goals. In response, theDemocratic Congressional Campaign Committee(DCCC) is hitting back, accusing Republicans of "desperately attempting to distract from their failed leadership and refusal to get a single thing done for the American people." The NRCC released a memo on Tuesday morning in which it knocked Jeffries for failing to meet a self-imposed deadline to roll out a new vision for America with a Democratic-controlled House. TheHillreported in April that Jeffries committed that "over these next 100 days, House Democrats are going to lay out a blueprint for a better America. And you will see a vision for this country's future that isn't about Donald Trump. It's all about you." Rnc Chair Says 'Big, Beautiful Bill' Key Part Of Gop's Strategy To Win Seats In Midterm Elections With those 100 days having already elapsed, the NRCC published a satirical memo titled "Project 2026," in which they accused the Democrats of being out of step with the American people. Read On The Fox News App "Hakeem Jeffries promised a 'Project 2026' within 100 days of April 30th, and it's been over 100 days. Democrats know their agenda is wildly unpopular, and their focus on these issues will cause them to lose yet again," the NRCC said in a statement. In the memo, the NRCC accuses the Democratic Party, "as directed by 'Leader' Jeffries and AOC," of wanting to "move swiftly and unapologetically to return toJoe Biden's America and implement the bold, transformational change our base demands." The memo lays out eight policy proposals they accuse Democrats of wanting to advance, ranging from "Bring Back Wasteful Government Spending and High Crime" to "Open Borders. Full Stop" to "Impeach President Trump. Again. And Again." Vance Warns Of 'Penalty' For Dems Who Opposed The 'Big, Beautiful, Bill' Ahead Of 2026 Midterms Policy ideas the NRCC charges Democrats with advancing range from the outlandish, such as "institute a federal 'Carbon Lifestyle Tax' on Americans who dare to own trucks, SUVs, or backyard grills, to ideas that have been pushed by the likes of New York City Democratic mayoral candidateZohranMamdaniof launching "pilot programs for government-run grocery stores in 'underserved' neighborhoods." Under economic proposals, the memo charges Democrats of wanting to "expand bloated government programs and bankroll the Green New Deal" and reverse the tax cuts passed under PresidentDonald Trump. Meanwhile, the memo states Democrats want to "abolish ICE permanently," "ban border wall construction and tear down existing barriers" and "provide taxpayer-funded healthcare, housing, and legal aid for every undocumented immigrant." The NRCC also takes a jab at Democrats for allegedly wanting to be "More Woke, Less Rational," wanting to "mandate pronouns and DEI training in every school and workplace" and have "no more ads featuringSydney Sweeneyor Shane Gillis." Commenting on the memo, NRCC spokesman Mike Marinella told Fox News Digital, "This is the America Democrats want to build." Zohran Mamdani In Position To Help Socialist Party 'Seize State Power,' Dsa Leader Admits "Higher taxes, open borders, skyrocketing gas prices, no more gas cars, crime in the streets, pronouns before commonsense, and no more freedom. House Republicans are the only thing standing between you and the nightmare of 'Project 2026,'" said Marinella. In response, Viet Shelton, a spokesperson for the DCCC, shot back, commenting, "Big talk by the party who's betrayed the middle-class so they can suck-up to their billionaire donors." "The Republican agenda is marked by rising costs, lost manufacturing jobs, a Big, Ugly Law that everyone hates, and a string of broken promises," he said, adding, "A tidal wave of recent polling confirms their majority is rapidly slipping away." "It's no wonder House Republicans are desperately attempting to distract from their failed leadership and refusal to get a single thing done for the American people." Fox News Digital reached out to Jeffries office for comment but did not immediately receive a response. PSG strengthens defense by signing Zabarnyi from BournemouthNew Foto - PSG strengthens defense by signing Zabarnyi from Bournemouth

PARIS (AP) — Paris Saint-Germain signed Ukraine defender Illia Zabarnyi from Bournemouth on a five-year contract Tuesday for a reported 63 million euros ($76 million). The 22-year-old center back joins the European champions after 2 1/2 years at Bournemouth, which has seen its defense ripped apart this offseason. Fellow center back Dean Huijsen has left for Real Madrid and left back Milos Kerkez signed for Liverpool. However, those sales earned Bournemouth 172 million euros (about 150 million pounds sterling). Zabarnyi will compete for a place at the heart of the PSG defense with Marquinhos and Willian Pacho. "I'm very happy to join Paris Saint-Germain," Zabarnyi said. "I am here to give everything I have on the pitch and I'm looking forward to making my debut and meeting the fans." He was not in the squad for Wednesday's UEFA Super Cup match against Europa League champion Tottenham, although he could feature when PSG begins its Ligue 1 title defense away to Nantes on Sunday. Zabarnyi, who has 49 caps for Ukraine and previously played for Dynamo Kyiv, could directly challenge veteran captain Marquinhos. He is PSG's second big signing of the transfer window after goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier joined from Lille for a reported fee of just over40 million euros, amid reports that No. 1 Gianluigi Donnarumma will leave the club despite an outstanding campaign last season. One of PSG's backup goalkeepers is RussianMatvei Safonov, who was included in the squad to face Tottenham. ___ AP soccer:https://apnews.com/hub/soccer

New America's Cup protocol sees female sailors, battery power in 'seismic change' for the Auld MugNew Foto - New America's Cup protocol sees female sailors, battery power in 'seismic change' for the Auld Mug

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — New rules for the America's Cup sailing regatta announced Tuesday have been described as a seismic moment for the historic event and the "boldest change in 174 years of the Cup." Crews competing in the 38th Cup regatta in Naples, Italy in July of 2027 will comprise five members, including at least one woman. Under new criteria, at least two members of each crew, including a female, must be nationals of each team's country of origin. Each 76-foot America's Cup boat will also carry a sixth "guest" crew member who could be a celebrity, influencer, media representative or sponsor. The America's Cup will now be contested every two years and the protocol or governing document for the event now establishes a system of governance under which all competing teams will have equal responsibility for organizing the event on and off the water and for the control of media and commercial rights. Most functions of the boats will now be powered by batteries, rather than the brute strength of their crews. The moves to modernize the Cup have mostly been well received by competitors and key shareholders. "As the founding Trustee of the America's Cup, we are completely supportive of the move to modernize the oldest sporting trophy in the world," said Jay Cross, commodore of the New York Yacht Club. The NYYC was the first to win the America's Cup when its schooner America — from which the trophy takes its name — beat 15 yachts representing Britain's Royal Yacht Squadron in a race around the Isle of Wight in 1851. The United States held the trophy until 1983, when the challenger Australia II ended the streak. Team New Zealand has dominated the recent regattas. "As the three-time successive winner and defender of the America's Cup and along with the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron as current Trustee, we feel the responsibility to continue to drive the growth of the America's Cup event," Team New Zealand chief executive Grant Dalton said. "Although the America's Cup is the oldest trophy in international sport and the pinnacle of sailing, its Achilles heel has always been its lack of continuity," he said. "So this transformation now gives all teams collective stewardship and we are introducing a new executive management team to be headed up by a new independent CEO." In a move to contain costs, a cap of 75 million Euros ($87 million) has been imposed on each team competing in 2027. Teams returning from the last America's Cup will be required to retain the same hulls while new teams will have to either acquire an AC75 hull or build to the same specifications. "This is a seismic moment for the America's Cup," Athena Racing team principal Ben Ainslie said. Athena Racing is the Challenger of Record which develops the protocol in partnership with the defender. "The partnership agreement fundamentally reshapes the governance and organization of the event," Ainslie said. "The teams and yacht clubs share a vision to make the America's Cup more inclusive, compelling and financially sustainable. "This new model marks a unified commitment to that vision. I am excited for the future of the sport." Tuesday's announcement follows a fractious development process for the protocol during which Athena Racing and the American and Swiss challengers criticized Team New Zealand's management of the event. ___ AP sports:https://apnews.com/sports

Texas Gov. Abbott decries 'runaway Democrats' as redistricting standoff enters its second weekNew Foto - Texas Gov. Abbott decries 'runaway Democrats' as redistricting standoff enters its second week

Democratic lawmakers in Texas once again thwarted the Republican redistricting effort in the state when the Texas House of Representatives failed to meet a quorum on Monday. Texas House Speaker Dustin Burrows reconvened the legislative chamber on Monday but was four members short of reaching the quorum to proceed to redistricting, flood relief and other issues. Dozens of Texas House Democrats remain out of the state as the standoff over redistricting enters its second week. "Those runaway Democrats are required to act on that agenda. They're failing to do their duty," Texas Gov. Greg Abbott told CNN's Jake Tapper on "The Lead" on Monday. "They can remain in hiding for literally years, tying the hands of the state of Texas from performing essential government needs. That cannot be allowed." The state House failed to reach a quorum each time it met last week, escalating a burgeoninggerrymandering arms racethat began when President Donald Trumppushed Texas Republicansto redraw districts. The effort, which would produce as many as five more US House seats for Republicans, could cushion the GOP against losses in the 2026 midterm elections. Burrows said he asked the Texas Department of Public Safety to establish a tip line for the public to provide information about the whereabouts of absent House Democrats' as the law enforcement agency continues its search for the members. "We will keep following every credible lead until these members return," Burrows said. "To those absent members, you can go to another city, another state, even another time zone, but you cannot escape your responsibility to the people of Texas. Eventually you will be here." The Texas House will reconvene Tuesday morning. House Democrats still face a decision about how long to stay out of Texas without a clear endgame. And with just days left of the special legislative session, Republicans may not have enough time to pass the new maps, and Abbott may have no other choice but to call another. "If he simply calls another special session to do things that are selfish, things that are for him, things for his buddies, that's up to him," state Rep. Gene Wu, who leads Democrats in the Texas House, said at a news conference Monday. "All we want him to do is actually listen to the people and do what they ask." Abbott told Tapper he is willing to call further special sessions even if they would take place after filing deadlines for the 2026 races. "Even if we get to and beyond the filing deadline, we are still going to redraw these maps," Abbott said. "If they think all they have to do is wait it out until November, December, they're wrong. I'm going to do this for the next two years." Republicans have pushed on with efforts to work around the Democrats' absence. Abbott has asked the state's Supreme Court to declare vacant the seat of Wu, who fled to Chicago with other Democrats. Meanwhile, US Sen. John Cornyn saidhe has enlistedhelp from FBI Director Kash Patel to assist state law enforcement in tracking down the absent lawmakers. Texas Democrats also face financial pressure to return. Absent lawmakers are subject to a fine of $500 per day, and they cannot use their campaign or official funds to cover the penalties. A Texas judge temporarily prohibited former gubernatorial candidate Beto O'Rourke's political group from fundraising to cover the lawmakers' travel expenses last week. Leaders of blue states have vowed to create Democratic-friendly seats in the US House in response to the GOP's bid. California Gov. Gavin Newsom has promised a November referendum on new US House maps that could create as many as five Democratic-held seats. The proposed California maps will be released this week, according to State Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas. Many Texas Democratic lawmakers remain camped out in Illinois as the caucus charts its next moves. "This is not a vacation for them," US Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois said at a news conference in Chicago on Monday. "This is a very important assignment to tackle an issue which affects the whole country." State Rep. Mihaela Plesa, vice chair of the Texas House Democratic Caucus, said that she and her colleagues would "not be intimidated" amid the escalating pressure from state Republicans. "Let me be perfectly clear: Texas Democrats are not running away from any fight," she said. "We're bringing the fight to the bad guys." State Rep. Rhetta Bowers echoed Plesa's declarations of resolve, referencing apotential bomb threatthe lawmakers in Chicago faced. "Our hotel received a bomb threat caused by a direct provocation of our safety, after our location was made public in an attempt to intimidate and silence us that night," she said. She later added, "The same forces that tried to silence us in Texas are working overtime to roll back the voting rights all across the country."
