Texas bill would allow lawsuits over shipping abortion pillsNew Foto - Texas bill would allow lawsuits over shipping abortion pills

Republican lawmakers in Texas have opened a new front in their efforts to crack down on abortion, this time with a bill that would enable lawsuits targeting the use of medication to terminate pregnancies. Their proposal would also take aim atshield lawsin other states that protect manufacturers and the doctors who prescribe abortion pills. In Texas, it is already illegal to knowingly mail, carry or deliver abortion-inducing drugs. It is also illegal for a doctor not licensed in the state of Texas to prescribe abortion medication. Now, in the midst of analready controversialspecial legislative session, lawmakers have reintroduced a bill that would allow lawsuits to target anyone who manufactures, mails, delivers, prescribes or distributes abortion pills. The bill would also permit people to file a wrongful death lawsuit if the medication results in harm or death of a fetus or the mother, within a statute of limitations up to six years. "These are the pills that are being mailed into Texas directly to women, often without instructions, certainly without doctors as before, and without follow-up care after," the bill's sponsor, Texas state Sen. Bryan Hughes, a Republican, told theTexas Tribune earlier this year. "This is illegal in Texas, but is taking place, and we've thus far not been able to protect women." The World Health Organizationsaysthe pills — a combination of mifepristone and misoprostol — can be safely prescribed for women to self-administer at home, without the direct supervision of a health care provider, in the first trimester. Hughes previously sponsored a state law, passed in 2021,banning abortionsatsix weeks, or when a "fetal heartbeat" is detected. The new proposal, known as the Women and Child Protection Act, is expected to be heard in committee in the Texas State Senate during Monday's special session. An earlier version stalled in the House during the most recent legislative session. The bill also seeks to route any challenges into federal court, and includes language aimed at neutralizing the force of so-called shield laws in other states, designed to protect doctors who prescribe abortion medication from states without bans. "Texas continues to try to meddle in the provision of safe, legal and affordable reproductive health care nationwide," says Julie Kay, the former executive director for the Abortion Coalition for Telemedicine. "Telemedicine abortion is a modern and effective way to provide care." At the same time, former Texas Solicitor General Jonathan Mitchell, who led the push for the state's current abortion restrictions, has announced a lawsuit filed on behalf of a Texas woman who alleges the father of the child she was expecting slipped abortion medication into her hot chocolate, leading her to lose her pregnancy. Similar to the proposed legislation, this lawsuit targetsshield lawsinother statesmeant to protect physicians who provided the abortion pills in the plaintiff's case. The lawsuit is filed in federal court and names a nonprofit group that the plaintiff claims helped the father obtain medication,Aid Access, which is based in the Netherlands. According to the civil lawsuit, the father "obtained these drugs from Aid Access, a criminal organization that illegally ships abortion pills into Texas and other jurisdictions where abortion has been outlawed." Aid Access and the father have not been criminally charged. On its website, Aid Access says it has facilitated over 200,000 online abortions to women in the U.S. since 2018. In some cases, the group relies ontelemedicine shield laws, such as ones enacted in California, Colorado, Massachusetts, New York, Vermont and Washington, to fulfill orders and mail them to recipients in states with bans. Aid Access founder Dr. Rebecca Gomperts previouslytold CBS Newsthe service is legal in all the jurisdictions in which it operates. "Where I work from, it's legal to prescribe the medications. And so I'll do that. And the pharmacy that I refer to is allowed to mail the medicines, on a prescription of a doctor, to the women. So (the Texas law) has no impact on what we do," Gomperts said. Aid Access and the father have not responded to the filing as of Monday morning. Jonathan Mitchell declined to comment for this story. Trump says he's looking at reclassifying marijuana at federal levelNew Foto - Trump says he's looking at reclassifying marijuana at federal level

PresidentDonald Trumpsaid his administration is considering reclassifying marijuana as a less dangerous drug. "We're looking at reclassification and we'll make a determination over the next few weeks," Trump said at news conference August 11. Though 45 states have legalized the use of marijuana for medicinal or recreational use, the federal government still classifies it as a Schedule I drug. Schedule I drugs are defined as highly dangerous, addictive and without medical use. Marijuana has belonged to this class of drugs since the Controlled Substances Act was signed in 1970. If reclassified, marijuana would be treated the same as drugs like Tylenol with codeine and anabolic steroids, which can be prescribed by licensed health care providers and dispensed by licensed pharmacies. Reclassifying marijuana would be the biggest change in marijuana policy the federal government has taken since the drug was first outlawed, but it would not make recreational usage legal under federal law. The move began in 2022, when then-PresidentJoe Bidenasked the Department of Health and Human Services and the Drug Enforcement Administration to review how marijuana is scheduled. In 2023, Health and Human Services recommended that marijuana be moved to Schedule III. In 2024, DEAproposed a ruleto transfer marijuana to Schedule III. That rule change has been on hold since March 2025. More:Inflation? Not in the cannabis market. Here's why weed is so cheap. Trump said the decision is complicated, weighing the benefits of marijuana use for medical reasons against potential societal impacts. "Some people like it, some people hate it. Some people hate the whole concept of marijuana," he said. This article originally appeared on USA TODAY:Trump says he's looking at reclassifying marijuana at federal level

Little League World Series 2025: Teams, schedule, bracket and how to watch the prestigious tournamentNew Foto - Little League World Series 2025: Teams, schedule, bracket and how to watch the prestigious tournament

One of the most prestigious youth sporting events is about to get underway. The Little League World Series kicks off Wednesday and promises another year of excellent play from some future major-league stars. The tournament will see a new winner in 2025 after defending champion Lake Mary was knocked off by another team from the Southwest. As fans gather in Williamsport to watch all the action, here's everything you need to know about the 2025 Little League World Series. The 2025 Little League World Series will take place Wednesday, Aug. 13 through Sunday, Aug. 24. That's typical for the event, which was first held in 1947 and has generally taken place in August. Here's how things will shake out during the event. Bracket play begins Wednesday, Aug. 13. Throughout most of the tournament, games will begin at 1 p.m., 3 p.m., 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., all ET, in the early rounds. Winners of those first four games will advance to the next round, where Canada, the Caribbean, the Northwest and West teams will get in their first game action. That will take place Friday, Aug. 15. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Between Aug. 16 and Aug. 17, the teams that lost in the first set of games will fight to keep their championship dreams alive. Game times will shift Sunday, Aug. 17, with 9 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. start times on that day. Play will then alternate between the winners and losers bracket between Aug. 18 and Aug. 19. On Aug. 20, eight teams will remain in contention. All teams will play that day. The two teams in the winners bracket that lose on the 20th will then play on the 21st to determine which team will head to the its respective final. The U.S. championship game and the international championship game will both occur Saturday, Aug. 23. The international game will happen first, with play starting at 12:30 p.m. ET. The U.S. championship game will take place at 3:30 p.m. ET. The next day, Sunday, Aug. 24, both the consolation game and the LLBWS championship game will be held. The consolation game begins at 10 a.m. ET. The LLBWS championship game is set for 3 p.m. ET. A total of 20 teams — 10 from the United States and 10 International clubs — will compete in a modified double-elimination tournament. Play begins Aug. 13, with the winners advancing and remaining in the winners portion of the bracket. Starting Aug. 16, the teams that lost their first games will face off to determine which teams remain in the event. Once a team loses twice, it is eliminated. But that changes once the championships begin. The U.S. championship game and international championship game will be held Saturday, Aug. 23, and will both be single-elimination games. That creates a scenario where a team could be eliminated from the event with just one loss. The same thing will hold true for the LLBWS championship game. It's a single-elimination contest. Games will last six innings. If a game is tied after six innings, both teams will play the seventh inning as normal, with no runners on base. But if the game extends past the seventh inning, a runner will open each inning on second base. The following 20 teams will take part in the 2025 Little League World Series: Region Team City/State Great Lakes Clarendon Hills LL Clarendon Hills Metro Fairfield National LL Fairfield, Connecticut Mid-Atlantic Glenmoore Eagle LL Upper Uwchlan Township, Pennsylvania Midwest Sioux Falls LL Sioux Falls, South Dakota Mountain Summerlin South LL Las Vegas, Nevada New England Braintree American LL Braintree, Massachusetts Northwest Bonney Lake/Sumner LL Bonney Lake, Washington Southeast Irmo LL Irmo, South Carolina Southwest Lamar LL Richmond, Texas West Honolulu LL Honolulu, Hawaii Asia-Pacific Tung-Yuan LL Taipei, Chinese Taipei Australia Brisbane North Region Little League Brisbane, Queensland Canada Little Mountain LL Vancouver, British Columbia Caribbean Aruba Center LL Santa Cruz, Aruba Europe-Africa South Czech Republic LL Brno, Czechia Japan Joto LL Tokyo, Japan Latin America Cardenales Little League Barquisimeto, Venezuela Mexico El Swing Perfecto Little League Chihuahua, Mexico Panama Vacamonte Little League Arraijan, Panama Puerto Rico Juan A. Bibiloni LL Yabucoa, Puerto Rico A full bracket for the 2025 Little League World Seriescan be found here. Little League World Series players must be between the ages of 10 and 12. The tournament previously allowed 13-year-olds to take part in the event, but altered that rule in 2015. Given the ages of the players involved, there arestrict rules on pitching limitsat the event. Players who are 10 are capped at 75 pitches a day. Players who are 11 or 12 are allowed to throw 85 pitches in a day. There are also mandatory days of rest for players based on how many pitches they throw in a game. Players who throw between 0 and 20 pitches are not required to rest. Players who throw between 21 and 35 pitches must rest for one day. That figure jumps to two days of rest if a pitcher throws between 36 and 50 pitches. Three days of rest are required for players who throw between 51 and 65 pitches. Once a pitcher throws 66 or more pitches, they need to rest for four days. Since the first Little League World Series in 1947, the event has been held in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania. These days, games are held at either Howard J. Lamade Stadium or Volunteer Stadium, which are located at the Little League headquarters complex. Williamsport won the first-ever Little League World Series, which featured teams from 17 different Little Leagues around the United States. Twelve total teams took part in the first Little League World Series in 1947. Every single game and event between Aug. 13 and Aug. 22 — including the Little League Home Run Derby and the MLB Little League Classic between the Seattle Mariners and the New York Mets — will air on ESPN. On Aug. 23, both the U.S. championship game and the international championship game will air on ABC. The LLBWS championship will also air on ABC on Aug. 24. That game will begin at 3 p.m. ET. Fans looking to watch the consolation game on the 24th will be able to do so over on ESPN2. That game begins at 10 a.m. ET.

Browns' Kevin Stefanski sets timeline on naming starting QB for preseason, regular seasonNew Foto - Browns' Kevin Stefanski sets timeline on naming starting QB for preseason, regular season

TheCleveland Brownsquarterback competition is nearing its end. Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski said as much on Monday, when he set a timeline to announce a starter. Prior to Browns practice,Stefanski saidhe wants to get through this week of joint practices and theirWeek 2 preseason matchupwith the Philadelphia Eagles before making a decision onwhento make a decision on QB1. That means an announcement on the regular season starter should come down sometime around preseason Week 3. That said, the proclamation for the announcement of who QB1 will be shouldn't come as a total surprise. While the competition for the QB2 job still may be wide open, Joe Flacco sat out preseason Week 1 vs. theCarolina Panthers, an indicator that he may have the inside track to the starting job in Cleveland. As for QB2, there are several names still in the mix. Both Kenny Pickett and Dillon Gabriel are still dealing with hamstring injuries; Gabriel is expected to participate in some 11-on-11 work, while Pickett is "not quite there" yet, Stefanski says. That leaves the door open for Shedeur Sanders to potentially keep building his case this Saturday when the Browns face off against the Eagles. Sanders had a positive first impression in his NFL debut, going 14-of-23 passing with 138 yards and two touchdowns as theBrowns downed the Panthers 30-10. Stefanski was mum on whether or not Sanders will get the ball to start again this weekend, but he did offer a little bit of a timeline for a starter announcement for the second preseason game vs. Philadelphia. "I'm not there on the game itself, by Wednesday, Thursday, I'll have a better feel for the game, and how we're going to handle that .... but I'm not there yet," he said. Stefanski reinforced that the rookie will get reps in the matchup, but when those reps will come is unclear. Complicating matters are the injuries to both Kenny Pickett and Dillon Gabriel. Stefanski added that both players are making progress from their injuries. Here's how the Browns' first unofficial QB depth chart looked: Joe Flacco Kenny Pickett Dillon Gabriel/Shedeur Sanders (IR) Deshaun Watson Flacco was a healthy scratch for the first preseason game, likely offering a little bit of a clue as to who is leading the race in the QB competition in Cleveland. Trump says Ukraine, Russia will have to swap some land for peaceNew Foto - Trump says Ukraine, Russia will have to swap some land for peace

By Trevor Hunnicutt and Steve Holland WASHINGTON (Reuters) -U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday that both Ukraine and Russia would have to cede land to each other to end the war and that his talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin would be aimed at taking the temperature on a possible deal. Trump told a White House press conference that his talks on Friday with Putin in Alaska would be a "feel-out meeting" to determine whether Putin was willing to make a deal. He said he could know within two minutes whether progress was possible. "So I'm going in to speak to Vladimir Putin, and I'm going to be telling him, you've got to end this war. You've got to end it," Trump told reporters. Trump also said a future meeting could include Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and could end up being a three-way session including himself and Putin. He said he would speak to European leaders soon after his talks with Putin and that his goal was a speedy ceasefire in the bloody conflict. Trump has in the past talked about land swaps but neither Russia nor Ukraine have been interested in ceding land to each other as part of a peace deal. Europeans worry that major concessions to Russia could create security problems for the West in the future. Ukraine has sought to push back Russian invaders ever since the largest and deadliest war in Europe since World War Two began in February 2022. Russia justifies the war on the grounds of what it calls threats to its security from a Ukrainian pivot towards the West. Kyiv and its Western allies say the invasion is an imperial-style land grab. Russia currently occupies about a fifth of Ukrainian territory, while Ukraine holds barely any Russian territory. Trump said: "There'll be some land swapping going on." "I know that through Russia and through conversations with everybody, to the good of Ukraine," he said. He said Russia had occupied some "very prime territory" but that "we're going to try to get some of that territory back". Bernie Sanders accuses Harris of being 'influenced' by billionaires in 2024 raceNew Foto - Bernie Sanders accuses Harris of being 'influenced' by billionaires in 2024 race

WASHINGTON - Progressive independent Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders accused former Vice PresidentKamala Harrisof being "heavily influenced" by rich people in the 2024 race, which she lost toPresident Donald Trump. Duringa rally in Wheeling, West Virginia, on Aug. 8, Sanders told a crowd that one of the reasons he thinks Harris lost the election was that she had "too many billionaires telling her not to speak up for the working class of this country." The rally was one of the many Sanders is holding around the country as part of his "fighting oligarchy" tour, aimed at mobilizing voters to stand up against the Trump administration. When asked about his remarks, Sanders told CNN's Dana Bash on "State of the Union" that Harris is a friend of his, but that her "core consultants were heavily influenced by very wealthy people." AnOct. 30, 2024, Forbes analysisfound that more billionaires backed Harris than Trump. Some ofHarris' supporters includedfilm director Steven Spielberg; Eric Schmidt of Google; Laurene Powell Jobs, widow of Apple founder Steve Jobs; and Melinda French Gates, former wife of Bill Gates, Forbes says. "How do you run for president and not develop a strong agenda which speaks to the economic crisis facing working families?" he said, adding that most Americans are living paycheck to paycheck and that the healthcare system is "broken." Bash then said that Harris did discuss affordability, to which Sanders replied that she did it in a "vague" manner and that he didn't want to "rehash" the campaign. "I think the key to Democratic victories is to understand that you got to stand unequivocally with the working class of this country," Sanders said. "You need an agenda that speaks to the needs of working people." Harrissaid on July 30 that she won't runfor California governor, leaving the door open for a potential 2028 presidential run. Paramount will become the new home to all UFC events in the US under 7-year deal with TKO GroupNew Foto - Paramount will become the new home to all UFC events in the US under 7-year deal with TKO Group

NEW YORK (AP) —Paramountwill become the new home to Ultimate Fighting Championship events across the U.S. next year, through a seven-year agreement announced with TKO Group on Monday. The news comes just days afterSkydanceandParamountofficially closedtheir $8 billion merger— kicking off the reign of a new entertainment giant after a contentious endeavor to get the transaction over the finish line. Under the deal with UFC, Paramount will exclusively distribute UFC's full lineup of its 13 marquee numbered events and 30 "Fight Nights" on its streaming platform Paramount+ — with select numbered events also set to simulcast on CBS — starting in 2026. It's a shift away from the UFC's existing pay-per-view model, which Paramount and TKO say will allow the mixed martial arts programming to reach more consumers nationwide. "Paramount's advantage lies in the expansive reach of our linear and streaming platforms," David Ellison, chairman and CEO of Paramount, said in a statement. "Live sports continue to be a cornerstone of our broader strategy — driving engagement, subscriber growth, and long-term loyalty, and the addition of UFC's year-round must-watch events to our platforms is a major win." Mark Shapiro, president and COO of TKO, added that the deal will mean "deeper engagement for UFC's passionate fan base" and that its athletes "will love this new stage." UFC events currently air on ESPN — which has offered tiered pricing for fans to view content across the sports network's TV offerings and streaming platform ESPN+since 2019. UFC's partnership with Disney-owned ESPNruns throughthe end of 2025. The seven-year deal between Paramount and TKO has an average annual value of $1.1 billion, the companies said Monday — marking a notable jump from the roughly $550 million that ESPNreportedlypays each year for UFC coverage today. But UFC's new home on Paramount will simplify offerings for fans — with all content set to be available on Paramount+ (which currently costs between $7.99 and $12.99 a month), rather than various pay-per-view fees. Paramount also said it intends to explore UFC rights outside the U.S. "as they become available in the future." While now a done deal, the path towards approval for the Paramount and Skydance merger was far from smooth sailing. Months of scrutiny and turmoil surrounded the transaction — particularly amidPresident Donald Trump's legal battle with "60 Minutes," the crown jewel of Paramount-owned broadcast network CBS. With the specter of the Trump administration potentially blocking the hard-fought deal with Skydance, Paramount agreed to paya $16 million settlementto the president in early July. The deal later receivedregulatory approval from the Trump administration. Trumphas long been friends with UFC CEODana Whiteand routinely attends UFC events. Last month Trump said that he's thinking of staging a UFC match on the White House grounds with upwards of 20,000 spectators to celebrate 250 years of American independence. Trumpannounced his plan in Iowaduring the kickoff for a year's worth of festivities to celebrate America's 250th birthday on July 4, 2026. White said in a post on social media platform X that the deal with Paramount will make it more affordable and accessible for U.S. consumers to watch UFC events. "This deal puts UFC amongst the biggest sports in the world," he wrote. "The exposure provided by the Paramount and CBS networks under this new structure is a huge win for our athletes and anyone who watches and loves this sport." Aside from the UFC,TKOalso houses the WWE and has been actively working out deals for the sports entertainment company. Last weekDisneyannounced anagreementwith WWE that will see its premium live events, likeWrestleMania ,streamed by ESPN. Disney subsidiary ESPN struck a rights agreement withTKO Group'sWWE to become the exclusive U.S. domestic streamer of the sports entertainment company's premium live events starting next year. Aside from gaining access to WrestleMania, ESPN will also air marquee events such as the Royal Rumble, SummerSlam and Survivor Series. The wrestling events will be available on ESPN'snew streaming service, which is set to launch next month, with select ESPN cable channels also airing them. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed, but The Wall Street Journal said that it's a five-year deal worth more than $1.6 billion. Shares of TKO jumped over 7% in midday trading on Monday.
