Zelenskiy says Ukraine 'fully supports' joint statement by European leadersNew Foto - Zelenskiy says Ukraine 'fully supports' joint statement by European leaders

(Reuters) -Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Sunday that Kyiv "values and fully supports" a joint statement by European leaders on achieving peace in Ukraine while protecting Ukrainian and European interests. French, Italian, German, Polish, British, Finnish and European Commission leaders on Saturday welcomed U.S. President Donald Trump's efforts to try to end the war, but emphasised the need to pressure Russia and provide security guarantees for Kyiv. "The end of the war must be fair, and I am grateful to everyone who stands with Ukraine and our people today for the sake of peace in Ukraine, which is defending the vital security interests of our European nations," Zelenskiy wrote on X. "Ukraine values and fully supports the statement by President Macron, Prime Minister Meloni, Chancellor Merz, Prime Minister Tusk, Prime Minister Starmer, President Ursula von der Leyen, and President Stubb on peace for Ukraine." Trump plans to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday. He has talked up the prospect of a deal that could resolve the three-and-a-half-year-old conflict. Zelenskiy and his European allies have warned that any deal requiring Ukraine to surrender significant parts of its territory would only encourage Russian aggression. South Korea's military has shrunk by 20% in six years as male population dropsNew Foto - South Korea's military has shrunk by 20% in six years as male population drops

By Jack Kim SEOUL (Reuters) -South Korea's military shrank by 20% in the past six years to 450,000 troops, largely due to a sharp drop in the population of males of enlistment age for mandatory service in the country with the world's lowest birthrate, a report said on Sunday. The dramatic decline in the pool of available males for military service is also causing a shortfall in the number of officers and could result in operational difficulty if it continues, the defence ministry said in the report. The report was made to the ruling Democratic Party member of parliament Choo Mi-ae, whose office released it. South Korea's military has steadily declined since the early 2000s when it had about 690,000 soldiers. The pace accelerated during the late 2010s and there were about 563,000 active-duty soldiers and officers in 2019. North Korea is believed to have an active-duty military of about 1.2 million, according to the latest estimate by the defence ministry in 2022. In the period between 2019 and 2025, the population of 20-year-old males declined by 30% to 230,000, according to government data, the age when most men who pass a physical exam enlist for military service, which is now 18 months long. The military has cited improved capabilities as a key reason for shortening service periods, made possible by a military alliance with the United States and the development of a defence industry that has become a major exporter of arms. Able-bodied men served 36 months in 1953 when the Korean War ended in an armistice. South Korea's defence budget, at more than 61 trillion won ($43.9 billion) in 2025, is larger than the estimated size of North Korea's economy. Still, the military is 50,000 troops short of the number of troops adequate for maintaining defence readiness, the ministry said. About 21,000 of the shortfall is in the non-commissioned officer ranks, it said. South Korea is one of the world's fastest ageing societies and has the lowest fertility rate in the world at 0.75 in 2024, which signifies the average number of babies a woman is expected to have during her reproductive life. Its population, which hit a peak of 51.8 million in 2020, is expected to shrink to 36.2 million by 2072, according to a government projection. Alanna Kennedy scored a late equalizer and Angel City tied the San Diego Wave 1-1 on Sunday night in their Southern California rivalry in the National Women's Soccer League. Elsewhere in the NWSL on Saturday, Gotham FC played to a scoreless draw at home with the Washington Spirit and the Orlando Pride were held to a 1-1 tie at home against Racing Louisville. Just as the Wave looked to be securing a first home win over Angel City since 2022, Sveindís Jane Jónsdóttir sent in a cross and Kennedy leapt highest in the box to head home and make it 1-1 in the second minute of stoppage time. The goal was Kennedy's first for Angel City. San Diego had only opened the scoring in the 85th minute, when Makenzy Robbe curled in a shot across the goal from the right side of the box. It was Robbe's first goal of the season, but her 10th career goal for the Wave. In the first half, after being struck in the head by the ball, Angel City defender Sarah Gorden left the game with a concussion. The fourth-place Wave (7-4-4) are now undefeated in their last four matches, although the last three have all been ties. Angel City (4-7-4) remains 11th in the standings and is winless in its last seven games. The team is also winless since head coach Alex Straus came aboard in June. Bloomer saves two penalty kicks for Racing Louisville Jordyn Bloomer saved a pair of penalty kicks and Louisville escaped with a 1-1 draw on the road against the Pride. With the game at 0-0, the Louisville goalkeeper confidently lunged to her right to parry away Julia Doyle's effort from the spot in the 45th minute. With the last kick of the first half, Racing jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Marisa DiGrande scored off a cross from Janine Sonis in the fourth minute of first half stoppage time. Bloomer then blocked Angelina's penalty kick in the 85th minute, diving to her left and firmly stopping the Orlando midfielder's shot. Bloomer finished the match with five saves. Just as it looked as if Bloomer's heroics would secure all three points for Racing, Louisville midfielder Ary Borges headed a cross into her own net to gift the Pride a late equalizer in the third minute of stoppage time. Racing (6-6-3) remain seventh in the NWSL standings, two points above the playoff line. The Pride (8-4-3) sit at second, 12 points behind the Kansas City Current in first. 10-player Gotham holds on for tie with Spirit Despite playing over an hour with 10 players, Gotham FC blunted the Washington Spirit i a scoreless draw at Sports Illustrated stadium. After a VAR review, Gotham forward Geyse was sent off for raking the bottom of her left cleat above the ankle of Spirit defender Gabrielle Carle in the 30th minute. It was the fourth time this season that a Gotham player had been sent off in a match. Sofia Cantore made her debut for the Spirit when she came off the bench at halftime, and by doing so became the first Italian to play in the NWSL. Gotham (5-5-5) ended the weekend in eighth in the standings, which is the final playoff spot. The team also recorded its highest home attendance, 13,860, of the season so far. The Spirit (8-4-3) sit third and remain undefeated since head coach Adrian Gonzalez was promoted from assistant after the departure of Jonatan Giraldez. ___ AP soccer:https://apnews.com/hub/soccer

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Preston Judd scored in the fourth minute of second-half stoppage time to rally the San Jose Earthquakes to 2-1 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday night. Judd subbed in for Josef Martínez in the 81st minute and used assists from defenders DeJuan Jones and Jamar Ricketts to score for the fourth time this season. Jones' helper was his career-high fifth after notching three through his first 157 appearances. Ricketts collected his third for San Jose (8-10-8) in his first full season in the league. Defender Édier Ocampo was forced to exit in the 27th minute after receiving two yellow cards in a span of eight minutes. Defender Tristan Blackmon notched his first assist this season and his second in 169 career appearances on White's 12th goal. China wants US to relax AI chip-export controls for trade deal, FT reportsNew Foto - China wants US to relax AI chip-export controls for trade deal, FT reports

(Reuters) -China wants the United States to ease export controls on chips critical for artificial intelligence as part of a trade deal before a possible summit between Presidents Donald Trump and Xi Jinping, the Financial Times reported on Sunday. Chinese officials have told experts in Washington that Beijing wants the Trump administration to relax export restrictions on high-bandwidth memory chips, the newspaper reported, citing unnamed people familiar with the matter. The White House, State Department and China's foreign ministry did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the report. HBM chips, which help perform data-intensive AI tasks quickly, are closely watched by investors due to their use alongside AI graphic processors, particularly Nvidia's. The FT said China is concerned because the U.S. HBM controls hamper the ability of Chinese companies such as Huawei to develop their own AI chips. Successive U.S. administrations have curbed exports of advanced chips to China, looking to stymie Beijing's AI and defence development. While this has impacted U.S. firms' ability to fully address booming demand from China, one of the world's largest semiconductor markets, it still remains an important revenue driver for American chipmakers. Who was John F. Kennedy Jr.?New Foto - Who was John F. Kennedy Jr.?

EDITOR'S NOTE:Watch the three-part CNN Original Series"American Prince: JFK Jr."premiering August 9 at 9 p.m, ET/PT and running the following two Saturday nights. John F. Kennedy Jr. was born into the Kennedy political dynasty in the early 1960's just after his father was elected president of the United States of America. Now 26 years after his death, his life is embedded into politics and culture. "JFK Jr. was harnessing his celebrity into something meaningful, and most people don't bother to do that," Tabitha Soren, a former MTV News correspondent, said. Here are five things you should know about him from the upcoming CNN Original Series "American Prince: JFK Jr." Kennedy was the first son of President John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, born in 1960. His birth, just a few weeks after his father was elected as the 35th president of the United States, made the front page of every major newspaper. Kennedy grew up in the spotlight, and everything from his professional choices to his dating life was the focus of tabloid fodder – including public relationships with actresses Sarah Jessica Parker and Daryl Hannah. Kennedy went on to marryCarolyn Bessette, an American fashion publicist, in the fall of 1996. The couple quietly wed in a ceremony off the coast of Georgia before settling into an apartment in Manhattan – but the couple remained under intense media scrutiny up through, and after, their deaths in 1999. "You kind of grew up being this public figure even before you knew you were a public figure," said Oprah Winfrey, during a broadcast with Kennedy. Steve Gillon, a friend of Kennedy, said, "You have to realize that JFK came to power just as television was becoming the primary source for people getting their news." Even though the media affectionately referred to JFK Jr. as "John-John," the nickname was exclusively used by the public and rarely, if ever, by his own family. The nickname, which wasmistakenly given to him by a reporter who misheard his father repeating his name in succession, remains in the political zeitgeist. "I promise you, his sister didn't call him John-John, his mother, no one in his family, even like the extended cousin ever called him John-John," said Carole Radziwill, a Kennedy family member. Kennedy studied American history at Brown University and graduated in 1983. Even though he tried to cast his celebrity aside, people flocked to his "JK factor," a term Kennedy himself coined. "There was always that kind of special, he got a little bit special treatment that the rest of us didn't get," recalled former Brown classmate and friend of Kennedy Gary Ginsberg. During his undergraduate studies, Kennedy balanced his familial obligations with his professional, including his campaign work for his uncle, Ted Kennedy, who was running for president. Freshly graduated from Brown, a 23-year-old Kennedy went to India where he studied at the University of Delhi. "He always said, you know, I don't want to do what people expect me to do. He needed to do something that stood out," said Gillon. Gillon said Kennedy often sent letters in which he alluded to the future, and while in India, Kennedy thought about law school as a possible career step. Kennedy earned his law degree from New York University Law in 1989, but he couldn't escape the press during his time in law school or after. "There is an intense amount of scrutiny around what is John F. Kennedy Jr.'s thing going to be," said CNN contributor and political historian Leah Wright Rigueur. While fielding incessant questions about his political aspirations, Kennedy continued down the legal path and took the New York bar exam, which he failed twice. Front pages ran wild with headlines like "The Hunk Flunks," but by the third try, he passed. Perhaps Kennedy's crowning professional legacy was the George, a glossy monthly magazine covering the intersection of politics, television, art and culture. Kennedy and his business partner, Michael J. Berman, worked with publisher Hachette Filipacchi Media US to launch the magazine in the fall of 1995. With magazines as powerful in driving conversation as social media is today, the George worked to turn people on to politics: "Politics is much too important to be left only to the politicians," Kennedy said. The provocative debut cover featured supermodel Cindy Crawford dressed as George Washington. "George was a huge risk for John. Look, George was a risk for any person wanting to start a magazine," said Lisa DePaulo, a journalist at George. Even with the popularity of magazines, the emergence of figures like Rush Limbaugh and Bill Clinton created a space for political entertainment not yet seen. Kennedy's fierce competitiveness and innate popularity worked in his favor. On its launch day, the magazine sold half a million copies, making it the most successful debut in magazine history.
