Michigan Gov. Whitmer makes another White House visit to meet with TrumpNew Foto - Michigan Gov. Whitmer makes another White House visit to meet with Trump

WASHINGTON (AP) — Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer met with PresidentDonald Trumpat the White House on Tuesday to discuss the tolltariffsare taking on the auto industry and the potential effects of his tax and spending bill on Medicaid. It's the latest in a string of meetings between the Democratic governor and the Republican president after the two frequently clashed during his first term. In his second term, Whitmer has adopted a morediplomatic approach, drawingsome backlashfrom fellow Democrats. But it's also resulted in multiple wins for Whitmer's state, including Trump's approving $50 million in storm relief and awarding anew fighter jet missionfor an Air National Guard base in the state. "I've always said that I'll work with anyone to get things done for Michigan," Whitmer, a potential 2028 presidential candidate, said in a statement Tuesday. "That's why I've continued to go to Washington, D.C., to make sure that Michiganders are front and center when critical decisions are being made." The private meeting between Trump and Whitmer — her third trip to the White House this year, in addition to a dinner in February where she sat next to Trump — marks a rare cordial relationship between the president and a leading Democratic figure. A White House official would not confirm the meeting but did stress Trump's continued focus on Michigan. In recent weeks, Trump attacked Senate Democratic leaderChuck Schumer, telling him to "go to hell," while also taking aim at otherhigh-profile Democratic governorswho have pushed back on some of his policies, including California'sGavin Newsomand Illinois'JB Pritzker, also considered possible 2028 candidates. Pritzker hasaided Texas Democratsin leaving their state for Illinois to block Republicans from their needed quorum to pass a new congressional map backed by Trump. Early Tuesday, Trump called Pritzker "probably the dumbest of all governors" in a television interview. Trump, however, has taken a different tone with Whitmer. Earlier this year, he said that she is a "very good person" who has done an "excellent job." Whitmer has treaded carefully with Trump, criticizing some of his policies rather than the president himself. She issued an executive directive last week to assess the impact of tariffs that she said have led to "massive economic uncertainty" — without mentioning Trump's name once. Tuesday's appearance ended with far less controversy than some of her other encounters with Trump this year. In a trip to the White House in April, she was unexpectedly ushered into the Oval Office, shielding her face with a folder at one point before standing awkwardly nearby as the Republican president signed executive orders and assailed his political opponents during a photo opportunity. Weeks later, the Democratic governor shared a hug with Trump ashe arrived in her home state. In their White House meeting Tuesday, Whitmer said that she told Trump and "his team about the impact tariffs are having on Michigan's economy, especially our auto industry." She also discussed "changes in the Medicaid program, and ongoing recovery efforts following the ice storm in Northern Michigan this year." Whitmer also saw Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and chief of staff Susie Wiles while at the White House. Trump announced last month that he had spoken with Whitmer to inform her that he was appproving $50 million in federal funds for Michigan to support repairs and recovery from a March ice storm. In April, Trump traveled to Michigan to announce a new mission for Selfridge Air National Guard Base, which Whitmer has sought for years.

Trump says Vance is "most likely" his heir apparent

President Trump said Tuesday he sees Vice President JD Vance as an early favorite to serve as his successor. A reporter asked Mr. Trump whether he sees Vance as the "heir apparent to MAGA." The president responded that Vance is "most likely" the leading contender. "It's too early, obviously, to talk about it. But certainly he's doing a great job, and he would be probably favored at this point," the president said during an unrelated executive order-signing ceremony. Mr. Trump also mentioned Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and suggested he's "somebody that maybe would get together with JD in some form." And he said the Republican Party has some other "incredible people." The president has singled out Rubio and Vance in the past, but has mostly avoided choosing a favorite. Hepraised both menin a May interview with NBC News' "Meet the Press" and said he didn't "want to get involved" in picking a leader, though he noted that the vice president would typically "have an advantage." Vance and Rubio are both seen as possible contenders for the 2028 GOP presidential nomination. The twowere oncevehement Trump critics — with Rubiorunning againstMr. Trump in the 2016 GOP primaries — but they have repositioned themselves as allies and defenders of the president since then. At least publicly, both men have been coy about their political ambitions. Late last month, Rubio downplayed the possibility of a presidential run in aninterviewon Fox News' "My View with Lara Trump," which is hosted by the president's daughter-in-law. Rubio said he thinks Vance "would be a great nominee if he decides he wants to do that," adding that he'd be satisfied if secretary of state ended up being "the apex of my career." Meanwhile, VancetoldFox News' "Fox and Friends" in April he isn't focused on 2028, adding: "When we get to that point, I'll talk to the president. We'll figure out what we want to do." Mr. Trump has alsorepeatedly toyed withthe possibility of running for a third term — even though the Constitution forbids presidents from serving for more than two terms. Earlier Tuesday, he told CNBC's "Squawk Box" he "probably" won't run for another term. Venezuelan Little League team granted exemption to President Trump's travel ban after senior team denied entryNew Foto - Venezuelan Little League team granted exemption to President Trump's travel ban after senior team denied entry

A team from Venezuela has received approval from the Trump administration to participate in the 2025 Little League World Series, two weeks after a team from the same country was denied entry for a different tournament. The team from Barquisimeto, Venezuela, the winners of last month's Latin America region tournament, was granted a "national exemption" to enter the country, per The Athletic. The effort reportedly required the intervention of Sen. David McCormick (R-Pa.) and a personal sign-off from Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Over the weekend, the team's Instagram account confirmed it would be playing in the tournament in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Pequeña Liga Cardenales (@plcardenales) The team's status was in limbo following the denial of a team from Maracaibo, Venezuela, to play in the Senior League World Series, a Little League-run tournament for players between 13 and 16 years old. Venezuela is one of seven countries facing a limited ban on entry into the U.S. following an executive order from President Donald Trump. The order grants exceptions to "any athlete or member of an athletic team, including coaches, persons performing a necessary support role, and immediate relatives, traveling for the World Cup, Olympics, or other major sporting event as determined by the Secretary of State." That leaves Rubio as the arbiter for what constitutes a "major sporting event," leaving uncertainty for any international event looking to take place in the U.S. The order specifically carves out an opening for those involved with the 2026 World Cup and 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, buteven that leaves uncertainty based on what is deemed a "necessary support role" or "immediate relative." St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Willson Contreras, one of 86 players born in Venezuela to appear in MLB this year, blasted the Senior League team's situation in an interview with The Athletic: "What pisses me off is they earned the right to be here," Contreras said of the team that was barred last month. "They are little kids chasing dreams. I put myself in their shoes because I was a kid once, and I dreamed of being in the Little League World Series once." In the case of the Little League team, McCormick, a Trump ally on immigration, reportedly worked with the State Department to ensure the Venezuelans were granted entry, via the Athletic: "I am thrilled my team and I were able to play a small role in making sure young athletes are able to chase their dreams and participate in this timeless Pennsylvania tradition," McCormick said in a statement to The Athletic. MLB also reportedly offered help to Little League with the visa process after months of following the Trump administration's lead on topics such asreinstating Pete Rose from the ineligible listandeliminating mentions of diversity programs from its site. The 2025 Little League World Series is scheduled to take place Aug. 13-24 in Williamsport.

DOJ: Ex-Heat security staffer stole millions in game-worn gear from team, including LeBron James Finals jersey that later sold for $3.7MNew Foto - DOJ: Ex-Heat security staffer stole millions in game-worn gear from team, including LeBron James Finals jersey that later sold for $3.7M

A former Miami Heat security officer is at the center of a multi-million dollar heist of game-worn gear that involved the theft of more than 400 items, including a $3.7 million LeBron James jersey from team facilities, the U.S. Department of Justice alleges. Per the U.S. Attorney's Office in the Southern District of Florida, 62-year-old Marcos Thomas Perez of Miami appeared in federal court Tuesday to face a charge of transporting and transferring stolen goods in interstate commerce. The news arrives days afterNBA analyst Amin Elhassan reported on the "The Dan LeBatard Show"that the Heat had been robbed of millions of dollars in memorabilia in "one of the largest, if not the largest, memorabilia heists in the history of this country." [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Per the DOJ, Perez worked as a security officer for the Heat from 2016 to 2021 and later worked as a security staffer for the NBA from 2022-25. A 25-year retired veteran of the Miami Police Department, Perez was trusted by the Heat with access to a secure equipment room in the Heat's home arena that stored hundreds of game-worn jerseys and other memorabilia that was intended for display in a Heat museum that has yet to be built, according to the DOJ. The DOJ alleges that Perez repeatedly accessed the room over the course of his employment and stole "400 game-worn jerseys and other items," then sold them across multiple internet marketplaces, frequently for below market value. Per the DOJ, Perez sold more than 100 stolen items for approximately $2 million. One of the items that Perez stole was a game-worn LeBron James jersey from the NBA Finals that he sold for $100,000 and was later sold at auction for $3.7 million, the DOJ alleges. That jersey appears to beJames' jersey from Game 7 of the 2013 NBA Finalsin which the Heat beat the San Antonio Spurs and James was named Finals MVP after securing his second NBA title. At the time of the auction, it was the third-highest price ever secured for a game-worn jersey, behind a Michael Jordan 1998 NBA Finals jersey ($10.91 million) and Argentinian soccer legend Diego Maradona's "Hand of God" jersey ($9.28 million). It wasn't reported who bought the jersey at that price, but it was sold via a legitimate auction conducted by Sotheby's. Per the DOJ, a search of Perez's residence on April 3 resulted in the recovery of nearly 300 other game-worn jerseys and pieces of memorabilia. The Heat confirmed that the items were stolen from their facilities, according to the DOJ. The FBI is continuing to investigate the matter. The DOJ did not announce what type of penalty Perez faces if he's convicted. The Heat have not publicly acknowledged the alleged heist.

WASHINGTON ―President Donald Trumpmade a surprise trip to a place that might be a first for a president: the roof of the White House. Trump took a stroll atop the West Wing's colonnade on Aug. 5, fielding questions from reporters as he scoped out projects he's undertaking on the property, includinga future 90,000-square-foot ballroom expansionfor the south lawn announced last week. "Taking a little walk," Trump shouted down to reporters when asked what he was doing up there. He then referenced plans for the $200 million ballroom, which he has said he will pay for himself and through private donations. It's contributed ‒ just like my salary is contributed. But nobody ever mentions that," Trump said. When a reporter asked the president what he's planning to build next, Trump jokingly responded, "Nuclear missiles." In addition to the ballroom, Trump has pushed through several other cosmetic changes at the White House so far during his second term, including a recently completed renovation of the Rose Garden, turning it into a stone patio; new gold embroidery throughout the Oval Office; and two soaring flag poles on the north and south lawns. Epstein's ex, Ghislaine Maxwell, doesn't want grand jury transcripts releasedNew Foto - Epstein's ex, Ghislaine Maxwell, doesn't want grand jury transcripts released

NEW YORK (AP) —Jeffrey Epstein's former girlfriend, Ghislaine Maxwell, wants to keep grand jury records secret in the sex trafficking case that sent her to prison, her lawyers said Tuesday as prosecutors continued urging a court to release some of those records in thecriminal case-turned-political fireball. Maxwellhasn't seen the material herself, her attorneys said — the grand jury process is conducted behind closed doors. But she opposes unsealing what her lawyers described as potentially "hearsay-laden" transcripts of grand jury testimony, which was given in secret and without her lawyers there to challenge it. "Whatever interest the public may have in Epstein, that interest cannot justify a broad intrusion into grand jury secrecy in a case where the defendant is alive, her legal options are viable and her due process rights remain," attorneys David O. Markus and Melissa Madrigal wrote. Prosecutors declined to comment. Government attorneys have been trying to quell aclamor for transparencybyseeking the transcripts' release— though the government also says the public already knows much of what's in the documents. Most of the information "was made publicly available at trial or has otherwise been publicly reported through the public statements of victims and witnesses," prosecutors wrote in court papers Monday. They noted that the disclosures excluded some victims' and witnesses' names. Prosecutors had alsosaid last weekthat some of what the grand jurors heard eventually came out at Maxwell's 2021 trial and in various victims' lawsuits. There were only two grand jury witnesses, both of them law enforcement officials, prosecutors said. Prosecutors made clear Monday that they're seeking to unseal only the transcripts of grand jury witnesses' testimony, not the exhibits that accompanied it. But they are also working to parse how much of the exhibits also became public record over the years. While prosecutors have sought to temper expectations about any new revelations from the grand jury proceedings, they aren't proposing to releasea cache of other informationthe government collected while looking into Epstein. The transcript faceoff comes six years after authorities said Epsteinkilled himselfwhile awaiting trial onsex trafficking chargesand four years after Maxwell wasconvictedof grooming underage girls to participate in sex acts with him. The British socialite denied the allegations and has appealed her conviction,so far unsuccessfully. Some of PresidentDonald Trump's alliesspent years suggesting there was more to the Epstein sagathan met the eye and calling for more disclosures. A few got powerful positions in Trump's Justice Department — and then faced backlash after it abruptlyannounced that nothing more would be releasedand that a long-rumored Epstein "client list" doesn't exist. After trying unsuccessfullyto change the subjectanddenigrating his own supportersfor not moving on, the Republican president told Attorney General Pam Bondito ask courts to unseal the grand jury transcriptsin the case. A top Justice Department official, Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, interviewed Maxwelllate last month, at the government's request. Last week, she was moved from a federal prison in Florida to a prison camp in Texas to continue serving her 20-year sentence. Officials didn't explain why. Donald Trumpsaid Tuesday that he didn't know ahead of time about Maxwell's prison transfer and hadn't spoken to Blanche about his conversation with her. "I think he probably wants to make sure that people should not be involved, or aren't involved, are not hurt by something that would be very, very unfortunate, very unfair to a lot of people," Trump said in a news conference Tuesday. The Epstein uproar also has reached Congress, where the House Oversight Committeesubpoenaed the Justice Departmenton Tuesday for files in the case. The committee also issued subpoenas to conduct sworn questioning of former President Bill Clinton, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and eight former top law enforcement officials. Bill Clinton, a Democrat, was amonga number of Epstein's famous former friends;so was Trump, a Republican. Both men have said they knew nothing of Epstein's crimes until he was charged, and Epstein's accusers have not alleged any wrongdoing by Trump or Clinton. ____________ Associated Press writer Will Weissert in Washington contributed reporting.

Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Jordan Addison has been suspended three games by the NFL in connection to a DUI charge from 2024, the NFL announced Tuesday. Addison is still permitted to practice and play in the preseason. He wasarrested in Southern California last Julyafter being found "asleep at the wheel" while blocking a freeway lane near Los Angeles International Airport. He was charged with driving under the influence after being arrested under suspicion of drunk driving. Addisonfaced a minimum three-game suspensionfrom the NFL as a result of the incident. The third-year receiver was set to go in front of a jury trial last month. Heinstead pleaded down to a lesser offense. Addison will serve 12 months probation as part of the lesser charge, known as a "wet reckless," a charge that acknowledges alcohol or drugs are involved, but carries a lesser sentence than a DUI. In addition to receiving probation, Addison was required to pay a fine and finish two online courses related to driving under the influence, per Addison'sagent Tim Younger, who said he expects Addison's probation to end early after six months. As a result of pleading down, Addison will not have his driver's license suspended. Despite not being formally convicted of a DUI, Addison is still subject to the NFL's substance abuse policy, which states that players who have violated the policy can still be punished even if they do not receive a criminal conviction. Addison has put up two consistent years with Minnesota, amassing 133 catches for 1,786 yards and 19 touchdown in that span. He is the team's second-leading receiver and scorer behind star Vikings receiver Justin Jefferson, who is currentlyquestionable with a hamstring injurywithout a clear timeline for return.
