Ron DeSantis in the shadows as Florida Republicans toast Trump's teamNew Foto - Ron DeSantis in the shadows as Florida Republicans toast Trump's team

ORLANDO, Fla. — By the time Susie Wiles took the stage here at the state Republican Party's biggest event of the year, it was clear who the star of the show was — and, equally as important, who was not. Wiles, President Donald Trump's longtime adviser and his current chief of staff, was at the event to receive the party's "Statesman of the Year" award, its highest honor. "I find it amazingly wonderful that almost every speaker has talked about voter registration and grassroots," she told the audience of party dignitaries. "It is the backbone of what we do and why we do it and why we win." As the evening went on, speaker after speaker hailed Wiles, with one calling her the "most powerful woman in the world." Along with her keynote address, the main portion of the weekend convention was dominated by figures in Trump's inner circle — some of whom had, like Wiles, previously worked for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis before publicly falling out with him. The lineup underpinned how abruptly the Florida GOP appears to have moved on from DeSantis, the man who had for the past five years been, by far, its most prominent figure and also was once named the party's "Statesman of the Year." After DeSantis' dominating 2022 re-election bid, he quickly turned to flirting with a run for president, a move that left his power in Florida Republican circles nearly unchecked as most in the party were eager to hand the governor victories to boost his chances of getting the Republican nomination. But DeSantis lost to Trump, who also calls Florida home. And over the weekend here, it became clear that not only has Trump taken over the Republican Party at the national level, but the state party has also fully gotten on board. "Make no mistake, this is Donald Trump's — not Ron DeSantis' — GOP," an adviser to the Florida GOP said. "Anyone who thinks otherwise has not paid attention since Iowa. Voters are ready to move forward and not focus on figures of the past." "Florida will continue to be the national standard bearer, with or without Ron DeSantis," the person added. That sentiment was palpable over the weekend at the Rosen Shingle Creek hotel that hosted the Florida GOP event. Along with Wiles, Trump deputy chief of staff James Blair, a former DeSantis administration official, addressed the audience, as did Tony Fabrizio, Trump's top pollster, who was joined on stage by Chris LaCivita, the co-manager of Trump's 2024 presidential campaign. Not only was the Trump theme overwhelming at the event, the feeling of the party moving on was made more acute because many who were given prime speaking slots were those with whom DeSantis has had public feuds in the past — most notably Wiles. LaCivita also spent much of the early phases of the 2024 presidential campaign attacking DeSantis, including calling him a "sad little man." DeSantis did give a well-received speech at the event, but was given a 2 p.m. speaking time, which was well before the main dinner speeches that featured the Trump-heavy lineup. "I'm sure he was not thrilled by it," said a former DeSantis adviser who remains an ally of the governor. "He had to notice, it was hard not to. But I would point to his polling numbers. He's still a very popular figure with Florida Republicans." In July,a poll from the University of North Florida(UNF) had DeSantis' approval marginally rating higher than Trump's, 83% to 82%, with both remaining overwhelmingly popular with Republican voters in the state. But along with his diminished presence at the state party event where he was once the star, DeSantis for the first time since first being elected in 2018 received significant pushback from the state's Republican-dominated Legislature earlier this year on an immigration measure — a move thatsent clear signalsthat his stock with Florida Republican leaders is dropping. His status in his own state will also continue to be challenged in the 2026 midterms, as he struggles to find a candidate he can support to replace him as governor. The current front-runner is Rep. Byron Donalds, who wasquickly endorsed by Trumpand has amassed an early war chest of more than $22 million. Many of DeSantis' supporters have publicly attacked Donalds, who has not yet returned fire, and there is little expectation that DeSantis will endorse his campaign. The most prominent name to consider getting in the race has beenDeSantis' wife, Casey DeSantis, but after months of speculation, she does not appear poised to make any announcement in the near future. Polling had Casey DeSantis and Donalds neck and neck, but after Trump's endorsement, Donalds quickly cut into what was once her dominating lead. "Casey DeSantis was an early favorite when we asked about this in fall of 2023 with 22%, ahead of Donalds with 9%, and 40% undecided, but after Trump's endorsement of Donalds and as we get closer to August 2026, DeSantis' lead has all but disappeared," Michael Binder, head of UNF's polling department, said in late July. It's "now inside the margin of error for this poll," he said.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott orders arrest of Democratic lawmakers who fled over redistrictingNew Foto - Texas Gov. Greg Abbott orders arrest of Democratic lawmakers who fled over redistricting

Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbotthas ordered Texas law enforcement to arrestDemocratic lawmakers who fled the statetoblock a vote on redistrictingthat could give Republicans several more seats in the U.S. House of Representatives. "Texas House Democrats abandoned their duty to Texans,"Abbott said in an Aug. 4 press releaseannouncing the move. "By fleeing the state, Texas House Democrats are holding hostage critical legislation to aid flood victims and advance property tax relief. There are consequences for dereliction of duty." It's unclear whether and how Texas law enforcement will be able to work with out-of-state law enforcement to execute the arrest order, which Abbott said is designed to ensure the missing Democrats comply with civil arrest warrantsissued by state Republican lawmakers in an 85-6 voteearlier in the day. Those warrants only apply within state lines. More than 50 state Democratic lawmakers fled Aug. 3 in the political power struggle. Many went to the Chicago area in Illinois, where Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker greeted them. Others went to Boston, Massachusetts and Albany, New York. At the urging ofPresident Donald Trump, Texas Republicans have proposed changing congressional districts to give their party an assist in next year's midterm elections. The revamped map could allow Republicans to flip as many as five Democratic congressional seats. The Democrats are already facing a $500 fine for each day they are out of the state. The penalty was created after state Democrats in 2021 made a similar move to protest new voting restrictions. However, supporters such as Pritzker, a billionaire, and U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett, a star Democratic fundraiser from Texas, have offered to help the fleeing Democrats. Abbott said that his arrest order, which called on the Texas Department Of Public Safety to take action, will remain in place until every missing Democratic member has been brought to the Texas Capitol. Raiders trade CB Jakorian Bennett to Eagles for DT Thomas Booker IV, AP source saysNew Foto - Raiders trade CB Jakorian Bennett to Eagles for DT Thomas Booker IV, AP source says

HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — The Las Vegas Raiders are trading cornerback Jakorian Bennett to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for defensive tackle Thomas Booker IV, a person with knowledge of the deal said Monday. That person spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press because the trade is pending physicals on both players. Bennett, drafted in the fourth round two years ago out of Maryland, started seven games for the Raiders last season before being shut down because of a torn labrum that required surgery. He played well as a cover cornerback, but Bennett was running with the second and third teams this training camp under first-year coach Pete Carroll. At 5-foot-10, Bennett doesn't fit Carroll's preference of playing taller cornerbacks. Six-foot Eric Stokes and 6-2 rookie Darien Porter have been competing with the starters this camp. Booker started one game and played in all 17 last season for the Eagles. He also appeared in four postseason games for the Super Bowl champions. But Booker, a 2022 fifth-round draft pick of Houston, was fifth on the depth chart at a deep defensive tackle position this season. The Raidersreleased defensive tackle Christian Wilkinson July 24 over a dispute over a recovery plan for a broken foot from last season. The club is attempting to void the remaining $35.25 million of Wilkins' deal, and he has filed a grievance with the NFL Players Association. Defensive tackles Adam Butler and Jonah Laulu have been working with the starters. ___ AP Sports Writer Dan Gelston in Philadelphia contributed to this report. ___ AP NFL:https://apnews.com/hub/nfl

BOSTON (AP) — Jarren Duran hit a three-run homer and Brayan Bello pitched six effective innings, helping the Boston Red Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 8-5 on Monday night for their sixth consecutive victory. Rob Refsnyder drove in two runs, and Duran added a leaping,run-saving catchin front of the Green Monster in the fourth. Bello (8-5) allowed an unearned run and six hits. The right-hander has surrendered three earned runs or fewer in 13 of his last 14 outings. The Royals got back-to-back home runs from Vinnie Pasquantino and Maikel Garcia off Jorge Alcala as part of a four-run eighth. But Aroldis Chapman handled the ninth for his 21st save. Royals starter Bailey Falter (7-6) was pulled after four innings. He was charged with seven runs and eight hits. Refsnyder put the Red Sox in front with a two-run single in the first. Duran then pushed the lead to 5-0 with two out, hitting a 419-foot drive deep to center for his 12th homer. Boston rookie Roman Anthony was scratched from his scheduled start in right field due to mid-back tightness. He was replaced by Wilyer Abreu. Key moment With Boston leading 8-5 in the eighth, Kansas City's Bobby Witt Jr. singled to right field. Nick Loftin attempted to score from second, but Abreu's throw from right beat him and Loftin was tagged out in a collision with catcher Connor Wong. The Royals challenged, arguing Wong illegally blocked the plate, but it was upheld after a video review. Key stat The Red Sox have outscored their opponents 44-16 during their win streak. Up next Rookie right-hander Ryan Bergert (1-0, 2.78 ERA) starts for Kansas City on Tuesday night, and left-hander Garrett Crochet (12-4, 2.23 ERA) goes for the Red Sox. ___ AP MLB:https://apnews.com/hub/mlb

Victim in Epstein case decries 'political warfare' in effort to release grand jury transcriptsNew Foto - Victim in Epstein case decries 'political warfare' in effort to release grand jury transcripts

Two victims of Jeffrey Epstein's abuse have filed letters to the court condemning the Justice Department's request to unseal grand jury testimony and cited the lack of respect they feel has been showed toward them byPresident Donald Trump and his administration. Both of the victims remained anonymous in their writings sent on Monday, with one calling the latest handling of the so-called Epstein Files "political warfare." "Dear United States, I wish you would have handled and would handle the whole 'Epstein Files' with more respect towards and for the victims. I am not some pawn in your political warfare. What you have done and continue to do is eating at me day after day as you help to perpetuate this story indefinitely," one of the victims wrote. Another victim argued that priority has only been on protecting "wealthy men." "(I) feel like the DOJ's and FBI's priority is protecting the "third-party", the wealthy men by focusing on scrubbing their names off the files of which the victims, "know who they are,'" one of the victims wrote. While neither letter outwardly requests federal Judge Richard Berman in New York to keep the transcripts under seal, both strongly urge him to take all necessary precautions in concealing victims' identities. One of the victims suggested that a third party review the release of the documents to ensure that no information related to the victims is revealed. The other victim told the judge that it is an "upmost priority" for any information regarding identify of the victims be redacted. Both emotional letters submitted to the judge showed clear frustration towards the administration's handling of the files. "I appreciate your time reading my short thoughts and feeling and my anxiety and frustration is NOT aimed at you, obviously. It is aimed at the very government here, the ones asking to release these transcripts, exhibits, etc., of which the victims are not privy to while they have concluded that there is nothing more to see on the files they hold. Yet no one has seen them, but them," one of the letters read. "I am beside myself." Victims in the case were asked to respond to thegovernment's request to releasegrand jury transcripts by August 5. The Epstein files have become a mounting problem for the Trump administration as the demand for them to be released has only increased over the past few months. Both the Justice Department and the FBI have struggled for months on how to release material related to the Epstein investigation. The documents require heavy redaction in order to protect victims and witnesses that were involved in the probe. In February, Attorney General Pam Bondi promoted the release of the documents, giving out information in binders to right-wing media influencers at the White House. Those influencers criticized the information, saying that much of it was old news. After two months of promising to release more information, the administration turned quiet. CNN recently reported that in May, Bondi had briefed Trump on the files and that his name appeared several times. On July 7, the Justice Department released an unsigned memo about the files saying that it does not plan to release more information. The letter also said that there was no "client list." Trump has continued to experience backlash from members of Congress, his political base and the public on the lack of transparency. The Justice Department asked the US Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York to unseal grand jury transcripts in the investigation on July 18. The department also asked a judge in the Southern District of Florida to release grand jury transcripts, but the request was swiftly denied. The judge overseeing the Justice Department's request for the unsealing of grand jury transcripts has asked the government additional questions to answer before Tuesday as to why he should grant their request. Attorney General Bondi orders prosecutors to start grand jury probe into Obama officials over Russia investigationNew Foto - Attorney General Bondi orders prosecutors to start grand jury probe into Obama officials over Russia investigation

Attorney General Pam Bondi directed federal prosecutors to launch a grand jury investigation into accusations that members of the Obama administration manufactured intelligence about Russia's 2016 election interference, a source familiar with the matter told CNN. A grand jury would be able to issue subpoenas as part of a criminal investigation into renewed allegations that Democratic officials tried to smear Donald Trump during his 2016 campaign by falsely alleging his campaign was colluding with the Russian government. It could also consider an indictment should the Justice Department decide to pursue a criminal case. The move follows a referral from Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, who declassified documents in July that she alleges undermine the Obama administration's conclusion that Russia tried to help Trump defeat Hillary Clinton. Gabbard requested that the Justice Department investigate former President Barack Obama and top officials in his administration for an alleged conspiracy. Soon after Gabbard's referral, Bondi announced that the DOJ was creating a"strike force"to assess the evidence released by Gabbard and "investigate potential next legal steps which might stem from DNI Gabbard's disclosures." The Justice Department declined to comment. CNN has reported that the allegations from Gabbardmisrepresent what the intelligence community concludedover Russia's attempts to influence the 2016 election. While Gabbard insisted the Russian goal in 2016 was to sow distrust in American democracy and not to help Trump, the unsealed documents don't undercut or alter the US government's core findings in 2017 that Russia launched a campaign of influence and hacking and sought to help Clinton lose. Fox Newsfirst reported Bondi's grand jury request. CNN's Holmes Lybrand contributed to this report. This story is breaking and will be updated. Dodgers activate Max Muncy from injured list, but also put Tommy Edman on the shelfNew Foto - Dodgers activate Max Muncy from injured list, but also put Tommy Edman on the shelf

LOS ANGELES (AP) — TheLos Angeles Dodgersactivated Max Muncy from the injured list and put fellow infielder Tommy Edman on the list Monday. Muncy has been out since July 2, missing nearly five weeks with a bone bruise in his knee aftera collision on a tag playduring a game against the Chicago White Sox. The veteran slugger had been on a monthlong roll at the time of his injury, boosting his OPS to .832 with 13 homers and 55 RBIs. Muncy returned more quickly than the initial six-week projection for his recovery. He was batting fifth and playing third base at Dodger Stadium on Monday night when Los Angeles opened a homestand against the St. Louis Cardinals. "He's put in a lot of work to get back with this timeline," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. "Getting him back lengthens and strengthens our lineup." But just when Muncy is healthy enough to return, the NL West-leading Dodgers are losing Edman after he aggravated his injured right ankle. Edman left a game in Boston last week after apparently spraining his ankle while running the bases, and he came out of the Dodgers' game against Tampa Bay on Sunday with pain from running the bases again. "Don't know how long it's going to be, but I do think that he'll be back at some point," Roberts said. "The main thing is when he gets back, how we can make sure that this doesn't happen again. It's kind of a ligament strain, tendons, whatever it is." Edman also missed time in May with a sprained ankle. Last year's NLCS MVP is batting .228 with 12 homers and 44 RBIs this season. Edman joins the lengthy list of Dodgers hoping to return soon from injuries to bolster the defending World Series champions' repeat bid. Los Angeles didn't make a bold move at the trade deadline last week, deciding to roll with its current roster while aiming for full health in October. Utilityman Kiké Hernández went out last month with a sprained left elbow, and he isn't close to returning despite undergoing multiple procedures including platelet-rich plasma therapy and cortisone shots. "We're not there yet, as far as worrying the season is lost" for Hernández, Roberts said. Other injury news is more encouraging: Second baseman Hyeseong Kim is swinging a bat and taking grounders in anticipation of returning from left shoulder bursitis as early as this weekend, while reliever Tanner Scott will throw another batting practice session soon in his recovery from left elbow inflammation. Roki Sasaki is still on the injured list on his bobblehead night Monday. The rookie right-hander has been out since May 8 with a right shoulder injury, but he will throw three live innings Friday after hitting mid-90s velocity in his most recent mound session. If his arm continues to feel good, he will get a minor league rehab assignment next week, Roberts said. ___ AP MLB:https://apnews.com/MLB
