A new measurement system has been introduced to the NFL, and fans got their first glimpse of it during Thursday's preseason game between theDetroit Lionsand theLos Angeles Chargers. Rather than having the chain gang run out to the field, the officials simply waited for the virtual measurement system to calculate whether the veteran running back had made the line to gain. LOS ANGELES — It appearsYoshinobu Yamamoto's doghelped keep things safe at home when the Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher was on a road trip. The dog's loud barking and a staff member who turned on lights likely helped thwart a burglary attempt early Wednesday morning at the Dodgers phenom's Hollywood Hills home, law enforcement told NBC Los Angeles' NBC4 Investigates. Three people jumped over the back fence at about 5:30 a.m. and broke a rear glass door but never entered the residence, authorities said. Nothing was taken. Staff members were home at the time and turned on the lights. Coupled with aggressive barking from Yamamoto's dog, the would-be thieves turned tail, law enforcement told NBC4 Investigates on Thursday. Someone at the home called a private security member, who then called police. Video from NewsChopper4 showed the dog by the pool at the home later Wednesday morning. In an interview with Spectrum Sports, Yamamoto said he adopted the dog from an animal shelter. "Since I was a kid, I always loved animals because my mom used to work at the veterinary clinic," Yamamoto said through an interpreter in the interview earlier this year. "Last year, while I was on the IL [injured list], my mom visited me in L.A. She wanted to visit the animal shelter, so we went there and I fell in love with my dog. So, I adopted him." A private security team member was at the scene in an unmarked car. Authorities are trying to determine how the intruders bypassed the officer. Police told NBC4 Investigates that anyone hiring private security should have them in a marked vehicle to provide a visual deterrent. No arrests were reported, but law enforcement sources said three people were seen on security camera video. Police, who are looking at security camera video, are trying to determine whether the crime is connected to one of the many burglary crews operating in Los Angeles. The Dodgers were wrapping up a series Wednesday against the Reds in Cincinnati. Yamamoto, 26, of Japan, is 9-7 with a 2.63 ERA this season. He pitched seven innings Monday, giving up just four hits and striking out nine in the Dodgers' 5-2 win. The attempted burglary is the latest crime targeting the homes of professional athletes in Los Angeles and across the country. Dodgers, Rams and LAFC players have all been recent targets. Break-ins were reportedat the homes of Dodgers infielders Max Muncy and Freddie Freeman in 2023. Aburglary was reportedat the Los Angeles home of LAFC striker Olivier Giroud in February. In December, theFBI issued a warningto pro sports leagues about athletes' displaying valuables on social media. The best-practices memo, part of standard practice of communicating with businesses and companies about relevant crime trends, urged athletes to limit images of valuables on social media.

Billionaire Elon Musk may be gone from President Donald Trump's White House, but he may not be done with Republican politics. Musk made a pair of $5 million donations on June 27 to the main super PACs backing House and Senate Republicans. That made Musk the largest individual donor to both groups in the first six months of 2025, according to new campaign finance reports filed Thursday. He also sent $5 million on the same day to MAGA Inc., Trump's super PAC. The new contributions are further proof of how Musk can make a big splash in politics by putting his signature on just one check. And they raise the question of how much more there might be before the midterms, despite Musk'smessy post-White House breakup with Trumpand his statements in Julyabout starting a third party, made after the donations. Musk's June 27 donations supporting the Senate Leadership Fund and the Congressional Leadership Fund, the two GOP super PACs, came about a month afterleaving his official post as an adviser to Trumpand days before he began publicly discussing the idea ofstarting a new political partyafter the passage of Trump's big domestic spending bill. In between, he had feuded with Trump online, evenattacking Trump for his past personal tiesto convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Meanwhile, other new campaign finance reports show Musk pumped $45.3 million into his own super PAC in the first six months of this year. The tech billionaire gave nearly $17.9 million directly to the group and sent another $27.4 million in in-kind contributions, with Musk covering funds formillion-dollar prizesto voters who signed petitions. America PAC spent $47.3 million in the first six months of the year, including $15.5 million through the first week of April, when the group was heavily involved in the April 1 elections for the Wisconsin state Supreme Court and special House elections in Florida. The group reported spending $6 million on canvassing and field operations, as well as a few million dollars on digital ads, mailers and phone calls. The full scope of Musk's giving in the first half of 2025 isn't clear yet — super PACs will continue filing fundraising reports with the Federal Election Commission on Thursday ahead of a midnight filing deadline, and many other groups involved in politics never have to disclose their donors. Muskspent approximately a quarter-billion dollars in the 2024 election, given largely in support of Trump's campaign. Thursday's America PAC filing covers fundraising and spending from Jan. 1 through June 30. It's unclear whether Musk used his super PAC for anything related to his July pledge to start a new political party, which came after the period covered by the new report. Musk spent about five months in the White House as an adviser to Trump and the public face of the president's "Department of Government Efficiency" initiative. But he's had a rocky relationship with Trump since the final days of his official tenure, repeatedly criticizing the White House's signature tax cut and spending bill.

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — The Ukrainian capital Kyiv observed an official day of mourning Friday, a day after a Russiandrone and missile attack on the citykilled 31 people, including five children, and injured more than 150, officials said. The youngest victim in Thursday's strikes was 2 years old, and 16 of the injured were children, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said. It was the highest number of children killed and injured in a single attack on Kyiv since aerial attacks on the city began in October 2022, according to official casualty figures reported by The Associated Press. The death toll rose overnight as emergency crews continued to dig through rubble. The Russian barrage demolished a large part of a nine-story residential building in the city, while more than 100 other buildings were damaged, including homes, schools, kindergartens, medical facilities and universities, officials said. Russia hasescalated its attackson Ukrainian cities in recent months, ignoring calls from Western leaders including U.S. PresidentDonald Trumpto stop striking civilian areas aftermore than three years of war. Russian forces are alsopressing onwith their grinding war of attrition along the 1,000-kilometer (620-mile) front line, where incremental gains over the past year have cost the lives of thousands of soldiers on both sides. "Russian forces will likely complete the seizure of Chasiv Yar in the coming days, which will open several possible avenues for Russian forces to attack Ukraine's fortress belt — a series of fortified cities that form the backbone of Ukraine's defensive positions" in the Donetsk region, the Washington-based think tank said.
