Credit - Kevin Dietsch—Getty Images Elon Musk has renewed his criticism of President Donald Trump's "Big, Beautiful, Bill," showcasing his fierce opposition to the measure at a critical time. As Senate Republicans scrambled to advance the newly-revised940-page proposal, Musk took to social media on Saturday to highlight his disapproval. "The latest Senate draft bill will destroy millions of jobs in America and cause immense strategic harm to our country,"Musk saidto his more than 220 million followers on X. "Utterly insane and destructive. It gives handouts to industries of the past, while severely damaging industries of the future." Musk, the former lead of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), who had aspectacular falling out with Trumpnot long after leaving the White House, doubled down on his stance in a series of follow-up messages. The Tesla CEO referred to the bill as "political suicide" for the Republican party, citing poll data that showed an approval of his stance against the measure. Musk went on to say that the bill "raises the debt ceiling by $5 trillion, the biggest increase in history, putting America in the fast lane to debt slavery." Prior to Musk's latest criticism of the bill, Trump had spoken about his former one-time ally duringa sit-down with Fox Newson Friday, for aSunday Morning Futuresinterview of which the first part aired on Sunday morning."I haven't spoken to him much, but I think Elon is a wonderful guy. And I know he's going to do well, always. He's a smart guy. He actually went and campaigned with me... but he got upset, and that wasn't appropriate," Trump said, claiming that Musk had become unhappy with the Electrical Vehicle mandate.Musk's long-established opposition to the Big, Beautiful Bill proved to be a sticking point during his DOGE leadership, and notably became a point of contention between himself and Trump, whose presidential campaign he helped fund. In early June,Musk saidthe "massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination." He took things a step further bytelling his millions of followersto "call your Senator, call your Congressman… kill the bill!" Read More:The Musk-Trump Implosion Can Be Seen From Space In the midst of Musk's public criticism, Trump's domestic policy bill, which centers tax and spending cuts, cleared a significant hurdle on Saturday night. The Senate delivered a 51-49 vote to take up the bill, after holding the floor open for hours to debate with holdouts and secure the numbers necessary to move forward. Vice President J.D. Vance arrived at the Capitol ready to break a potential tie, and he reportedly held deep talks with people unsure of pledging their support to the bill. The newly-revised bill—released just after midnight on Saturday—may have advanced, in spite of the vocal opposition it faced from some, but there is still a lot of work to be done. The measure will now be debated in the Senate, and if it passes the Senate, it will go back to the House. The timeline is incredibly tight, as Trump hasexpressed his desire to sign the bill on July 4th. Meanwhile, Senate Democrats are currently dragging out the process byreading aloud the 940-page bill.By midday on Sunday, the Senate had finished its 12th hour and was little more than halfway through reading the proposal. "If Senate Republicans won't tell the American people what's in this bill, then Democrats are going to force this chamber to read it from start to finish," said Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer of New York. Despite the long road ahead, in the early hours of Sunday morning, Trump celebrated the progress the bill has made thus far, saying he was "very proud" of the Republican party. "Tonight we saw a great victory in the Senate,"Trump said, before going on to name the key people involved in advancing the measure. "I look forward to working with them to grow our economy, reduce wasteful spending, secure our border, fight for our military/veterans, ensure that our Medicaid system helps those who truly need it, protect our Second Amendment, and so much more." Read More:Trump Lobbies for Passage of 'Big Beautiful Bill' Hours After Big Setback in Senate Republicans Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina and Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky notably voted to block consideration of the measure. Sen. Tillis said he could not support the bill due to his concerns over Medicaid cuts and what that would mean for people in his state. "The Senate version… contains significant changes to Medicaid that would be devastating to North Carolina, and I cannot support it,"Tillis said. "The Senate should go back to the House's common-sense approach to Medicaid reform to enact work requirements while protecting care for those who truly need it." Trump took to his own social media platform, Truth Social, to air his grievances with Tillis' oppositional stance. "Numerous people have come forward wanting to run in the primary against Senator Thom Tillis,"he said. "I will be meeting with them over the coming weeks, looking for someone who will properly represent the Great People of North Carolina and, so importantly, the United States of America." In a statement on Sunday, Tillis said he will not seek re-election. The two-term Senator said that he is proud of the "bipartisan victories" he's been a part of during his tenure, but highlighted his concerns about the current political environment. "In Washington, over the last few years, it's become increasingly evident that leaders who are willing to embrace bipartisanship, compromise, and demonstrate independent thinking are becoming an endangered species," he said via a statement. "Sometimes those bipartisan initiatives got me into trouble with my own party, but I wouldn't have changed a single one." Sen. Paul, meanwhile, took a stance against the policy bill's provision to raise the nation's debt limit by $5 trillion. On Saturday evening, he shared Musk's X post showcasing poll numbers being against the bill, and commented:"Not that we should govern by poll, but it is very clear people don't want this extreme amount of debt and reckless spending." Explaining his issue with the numbers,Sen. Paul said:"How about this: Tweak the 'Big, not so beautiful, bill' so it doesn't add so much to the debt? The legislation, as currently written, would pay someone like Elon Musk $1000 per child, and we know how prolific he is . . . No offense, Elon, but is that a wise use of our $$?" Responding to Sen. Paul's vote,Trump said: "Did Rand Paul vote 'NO' again tonight? What's wrong with this guy?" On the other end of the opposition, some hard-right Republicans held off on their votes until the last minute, angling for further spending cuts into the bill in exchange for their support. Sen. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, who had earlier in the dayurged fellow Republicans not to rushthrough the bill before knowing exactly what it contained, dramatically changed his vote to a yes in the closing moments. Speaking out after his last-minute change of heart, Sen.Johnson said: "Biden and the Democrats left behind enormous messes that we are trying to clean up—an open border, wars, and massive deficits. After working for weeks with POTUS and his highly capable economic team, I am convinced that he views this as a necessary first step and will support my efforts to help put America on a path to fiscal sustainability." Elliott is in position to contend for 2nd NASCAR title following 'surreal' last-lap win in AtlantaNew Foto - Elliott is in position to contend for 2nd NASCAR title following 'surreal' last-lap win in Atlanta

HAMPTON, Ga. (AP) — Chase Elliott couldn't have picked a better setting for adrought-breaking win. Fans roared in approval after Elliott, the home-state favorite, passed Brad Keselowskion the final lap to end a 44-race drought by winning the NASCAR Cup Series at Atlanta on Saturday night. Elliott's 20th career victory pushed him to second place in the Cup Series points race, putting him in prime position to return to the top of the NASCAR world after winning his first championship in 2020. Elliott earned a spot in the NASCAR playoffs with his first victory since April 2024 at Texas. He said he'll always remember the win as a career highlight, in part because of the ovation from fans who chanted "Chase! Chase! Chase!" Elliott, a Dawsonville, Georgia, native, climbed into the stands at EchoPark Speedway, formerly Atlanta Motor Speedway, to celebrate with the fans. "It was, truthfully, a pretty surreal moment," Elliott said. "Something I'll remember for the rest of my life. ... Saturday night under the lights, been a while since we won, just getting ourselves a win and advancing up on the playoff thing." It was his first Atlanta win since 2022. Elliott has 594 points, 37 behind Hendrick Motorsports teammate William Byron, who has 631. A third Hendrick Motorsports driver, Kyle Larson, is third. Another Hendrick driver, Alex Bowman, played a key role in Elliott's comeback win. Bowman, who finished third, gave Elliott a push and then helped block Keselowski on the final lap. "I'm happy for the 9 team," Bowman said. "It's a big win for him in his hometown. ... I'm glad to have a Hendrick car in victory lane. I wish it was us." Elliott said he'll try to repay the favor by helping Bowman join the other three Hendrick drivers in the playoffs. "I recognize that he gave me a great shove," Elliott said. "I recognize that he took his run on Brad, too, to try to get himself to second, which ultimately helped me as well. "Yeah, those are all things that I remember." Elliott advanced to the second round of NASCAR's newIn-Season Challenge, a five-race, bracket-style tournament. With the field cut from 32 to 16 drivers, Elliott will be paired against John Hunter Nemechek when the Cup Series moves to the Chicago Street Race next Sunday. A $1 million prize awaits the winner, and Elliott's odds improved after Atlanta wrecks knocked out the top two seeds, Denny Hamlin and Chase Briscoe. Elliott wouldn't be the first family member to win a $1 million bonus. In 1985 his father, Bill Elliott, became the first winner of the Winston Million as a reward for claiming wins in three of the circuit's top four races at the time. The bonus earned the elder Elliott the nickname "Million Dollar Bill." Now the younger Elliott is a strong contender to become first in line for another $1 million prize. "It'd be a really cool thing to win for sure and hope it works out that way," Chase Elliott said. Elliott's victory drought came after he needed surgery to repair a broken tibia in his left leg suffered in a snowboarding accident andmissed six racesin 2023. He said the support of longtime crew chief Alan Gustafson was "in large part" responsible for helping him retain his confidence and reclaim his winning form. Gustafson said the win was more important for the 2025 playoff race than for ending the victory drought. "The points were getting tight for the playoffs, for sure," Gustafson said. "I think that's probably the biggest thing. I think all the cars contending to win, I don't think any of them had won. I think that's probably the biggest thing we needed was that cushion." Saturday night's win was Elliott's third consecutive top-five finish. "When you're fortunate enough to climb the mountain and be able to stand at the top of the mountain with someone, that's an incredible achievement, right?" Elliott said. "That's something that (Gustafson) and I will always cherish and remember that we did that together. "For me it's really, really important to climb that mountain with the same people that we did the first time and know that we never quit on each other. That's just a really important piece of the puzzle for me." ___ AP auto racing:https://apnews.com/hub/auto-racing

Hall of Fame horse trainer D. Wayne Lukas dies at 89New Foto - Hall of Fame horse trainer D. Wayne Lukas dies at 89

Hall of Fame horse trainer D. Wayne Lukas died at his home in Louisville, Kentucky, on Saturday night. He was 89. Lukas won 15 Triple Crown races, including four Kentucky Derby titles and, most recently, last year's Preakness with Seize the Grey. He was hospitalized last week while he fought a severe MRSA blood infection that damaged his heart and digestive system, in addition to worsening pre-existing chronic conditions, according to The Associated Press. He declined an aggressive treatment plan and returned home earlier this week to spend his final days with family, per aChurchill Downs news release Sunday. "Wayne devoted his life not only to horses but to the industry — developing generations of horsemen and horsewomen and growing the game by inviting unsuspecting fans into the winner's circle," his family said in a statement. "Whether he was boasting about a maiden 2-year-old as the next Kentucky Derby winner or offering quiet words of advice before a big race, Wayne brought heart, grace, and grit to every corner of the sport. His final days were spent at home in Kentucky, where he chose peace, family, and faith." Upon Lukas' hospitalization, his horses were transferred to his assistant trainer, Sebastian "Bas" Nicholl. "Wayne built a legacy that will never be matched," Nicholl, a member of Lukas' team since 2002, said last week, via the AP. "Every decision I make, every horse I saddle, I'll hear his voice in the back of my mind. This isn't about filling his shoes — no one can. It's about honoring everything that he's built." Bob Baffert, a good friend of Lukas', is the only horse trainer with more Triple Crown victories. Lukas is also responsible for a record-tying 20 wins in the Breeders' Cup World Championships. He was born Darnell Wayne Lukas on Sept. 2, 1935, in Wisconsin. He made a name for himself in the sport with quarter horses before transitioning to thoroughbred racing in the late 1970s. His first Triple Crown victory came at the Preakness in 1980 with Codex. That's just one of his 4,967 documented thoroughbred racing wins, according to the AP, which also reported Lukas' horses have earned more than $310 million from more than 30,600 starts. "A four-time winner of the Kentucky Derby, today we lost one of the great champions of Churchill Downs and one of the most significant figures in Thoroughbred racing over the last 50 years," Bill Carstanjen, CEO of Churchill Downs Incorporated, said in Sunday's release. "We will miss his humor, his wisdom and his unmatched capacity to thrill the fans with the performances of his horses on our sport's biggest days."

Republican Senator Mullin says babies born in US should be deported if parents areNew Foto - Republican Senator Mullin says babies born in US should be deported if parents are

(Reuters) -Republican U.S. Senator Markwayne Mullin said on Sunday he believes babies born in the United States to immigrants living in the country illegally should be deported alongside their parents if the adults are removed. Mullin's comments on NBC's "Meet the Press" came in response to questions about a U.S. Supreme Court decision on Friday that paved the way for President Donald Trump's executive order restricting birthright citizenship to go into effect soon in some states. The court's ruling did not address the legality of Trump's order, which would upend the historic practice of granting U.S. citizenship to anyone born in the country regardless of their parents' immigration status. NBC's Kristen Welker asked Mullin what should happen to babies born in the United States whose parents are deported, given that the children are U.S. citizens under current law. "Well, they should go where their parents are," said Mullin, of Oklahoma. "Why wouldn't you send a child with their parents? I mean, why would you want to separate them?" Friday's court decision caused confusion among immigrants and advocates, who scrambled to understand the practical effects if birthright citizenship applies to babies born in some states but not in others. GOP Sen. Thom Tillis won't seek re-election after drawing Trump's ireNew Foto - GOP Sen. Thom Tillis won't seek re-election after drawing Trump's ire

WASHINGTON — Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., announced Sunday that he would not run for re-election, one day after he drew President Donald Trump's ire for opposing the party'ssweeping domestic policy package. The surprise decision opens up seat in battleground North Carolina that was already set to be one of the most hotly contested races of the 2026 midterms. Tillis issued a lengthy statement about his decision, saying he had not been enthusiastic about seeking a third six-year term in the Senate. "As many of my colleagues have noticed over the last year, and at times even joked about, I haven't exactly been excited about running for another term," Tillis said. "That is true since the choice is between spending another six years navigating the political theatre and partisan gridlock in Washington or spending that time with the love of my life Susan, our two children, three beautiful grandchildren, and the rest of our extended family back home. It's not a hard choice, and I will not be seeking re-election." After Tillis voted against advancing the GOP's massive domestic policy bill Saturday, Trump attacked him in a series of social media posts andthreatened to meet withpotential primary challengers. "Thom Tillis is making a BIG MISTAKE for America, and the Wonderful People of North Carolina!" Trump wrote on Truth Social on Saturday night. In his statement, Tillis compared himself to former Democratic Sens. Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona — both of whom became independents by the end of their tenures — without explicitly naming them. "Democrats recently lost two such leaders who were dedicated to making the Senate more of a functional and productive legislative body. They got things done. But they were shunned after they courageously refused to cave to their party bosses to nuke the filibuster for the sake of political expediency. They ultimately retired and their presence in the Senate chamber has been sorely missed every day since," Tillis said. "It underscores the greatest form of hypocrisy in American politics. When people see independent thinking on the other side, they cheer. But when those very same people see independent thinking coming from their side, they scorn, ostracize, and even censure them," he continued. Prior to Saturday's vote, Tillis hadprivately warned his colleaguesthat the Medicaid cuts in the party's "big, beautiful bill" would cost them politically. Republicans are now forced to scramble to find a replacement for Tillis in a race that is a top target for Democrats in next year's midterms. A source close to the Trump family said Lara Trump, the president's daughter-in-law and former Republican National Committee co-chair, is "strongly considering" jumping into the contest. Asked about the odds she will run, the source said, "I'd put it as high as one could be considering it." Another potential contender, according to a GOP strategist familiar with the matter, is Rep. Richard Hudson, R-N.C., who has aligned himself closely with Trump. But his role as chair of House Republicans' campaign arm could complicate a Senate bid, and it's unclear whether if he would need to step down from his leadership post to run. A source close to Rep. Pat Harrigan, R-N.C. said the congressman is looking at the seat. RNC Chairman Mike Whatley, who formerly chaired the North Carolina GOP, is also seen as a potential candidate. National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman Tim Scott expressed confidence the party would be able to defend the seat without Tillis in the race. "President Trump has won North Carolina three times, and the state's been represented by two Republican Senators for over a decade," Scott, R-S.C., said in a statement. "That streak will continue in 2026 when North Carolinians elect a conservative leader committed to advancing an agenda of opportunity, prosperity, and security." But Democrats are now even more optimistic about their chances in North Carolina next year as they seek to cut into the GOP's 53-47 majority. "Thom Tillis' decision not to run for reelection is another blow to Republicans' chances as they face a midterm backlash that puts their majority at risk," Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee spokesperson Maeve Coyle said in a statement. "Even Tillis admits the GOP plan to slash Medicaid and spike costs for families is toxic — and in 2026, Democrats will flip North Carolina's Senate seat." Democrats are hopeful they can recruitformer Gov. Roy Cooperto enter the contest, which already features former Rep. Wiley Nickel, D-N.C. "No matter which MAGA loyalist Donald Trump hand-picks to run in North Carolina, I'm the Democrat who's ready to take them on and win," Nickel said in a statement Sunday. "I've flipped a tough seat before and we're going to do it again."

Detroit Pistons guard Malik Beasley is being investigated by the U.S. District Attorney's office for allegations of gambling on NBA games and prop bets,ESPN's Shams Charania reports. Beasley has not been charged, his attorney, Steve Haney, told ESPN. "An investigation is not a charge,"Haney told Charania. "Malik is afforded the same right of the presumption of innocence as anyone else under the U.S. constitution. As of now, he has not been charged with anything." A prominent U.S. sportsbook noticed unusual betting activity on prop bets for Beasley beginning in January 2024, according toESPN gambling reporter David Payne Purdum. Beasley was playing his lone season with the Milwaukee Bucks at that point. He started 77 games, scoring 11.3 points per game and shooting 41% on 3s. At least one prominent US sportsbook noticed unusual betting patterns on Malik Beasley prop bets beginning in January 2024. — David Payne Purdum (@DavidPurdum)June 29, 2025 Per Charania, the Pistons were in "serious talks" with Beasley, 28, on a new three-year, $42 million contract, but those are now on hold. That likely applies to any interest Beasley attracted as a free agent, as well. Beasley is ranked No. 14 onYahoo Sport's NBA free-agency big boardandthe fourth-best shooting guardon the market by Morten Stig Jensen. "Beasley signed just a one-year contract last offseason, outplayed it spectacularly, and now the Pistons are left with two options to keep him: find a way to create cap space to sign him into that, or see if he'll bite on the non-tax [mid-level exception]." Last season, Beasley emerged as an impact player for Detroit as the teamreturned to the NBA playoffsfor the first time since 2019. Signinga one-year, $6 million deal, he averaged 16.3 points and shot 41% on 3-pointers, finishingsecond in NBA Sixth Man of the Year voting. Beasley's 319 3-pointers made were second in the league behind Anthony Edwards' 320 for the Minnesota Timberwolves. Beasley became the third player in NBA history to hit 300 3s while shooting at least 40% from behind the arc. Detroit selected Tennessee sharpshooter Chaz Lanier inthe second round of last week's NBA Draftand is reportedlyamong the top suitorsfor free-agent guard Nickeil Walker-Alexander. This development with Beasley could potentially increase urgency for the Pistons to move on both of those fronts.
