WASHINGTON (AP) —U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noemwas taken to the hospital on Tuesday after experiencing an allergic reaction, her spokeswoman said. "She is alert and recovering," said the statement from department spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin, who said the hospital treatment was out of an "abundance of caution." Noem, 53, heads a sprawling department with roughly 260,000 employees handling immigration enforcement, airport security, disaster response and other matters. She has been among the more high-profile members of PresidentDonald Trump'scabinet, traveling extensively and maintaining a robust social media presence. She is often the public face of his mass deportation effort, frequently goes out on immigration enforcement operations and has appeared in commercials encouragingimmigrantsin the country illegally to voluntarily leave the U.S. She held a press conference last week in California where U.S. Sen. Alex Padilla, a California Democrat, was forcibly removed as he tried to speak to Noem about immigration raids. Padilla recalled the incident duringan emotional speechfrom the Senate floor Tuesday. Homeland Security said the Secret Service, which is responsible for protecting the secretary, "thought he was an attacker." They also accused Padilla of "disrespectful political theater." Video of the incident shows a Secret Service agent on Noem's security detail grabbing Padilla by his jacket and shoving him from the room. In the hallway outside he was forced to the ground and handcuffed. Noem told Fox LA afterward that she had a "great" conversation with Padilla after the scuffle, but called his approach "something that I don't think was appropriate at all." Before being tapped to head Homeland Security, Noem was a two-term governor of South Dakota, a former member of Congress and a staunch Trump supporter. She has said she specifically asked Trump for the Homeland Security portfolio because she knew it dealt with Trump's top priorities. Earlier this year Noem's pursewas stolen on EasterSunday while she was out to dinner with her family. The purse reportedly contained about $3,000 in cash, her keys, driver's license, passport and Homeland Security badge. The Homeland Security Department said Noem had cash in her purse to pay for gifts, dinner and other activities for her family on Easter. A suspect was later arrested in connection with the theft and has been charged in federal court with aggravated identity theft, robbery and fraud.

Conservative Louisiana state Sen. Blake Miguez announces bid to run for US Sen. Bill Cassidy's seatNew Foto - Conservative Louisiana state Sen. Blake Miguez announces bid to run for US Sen. Bill Cassidy's seat

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Louisiana state Sen. Blake Miguez officially launched his bid on Tuesday to unseat fellow Republican U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy in 2026. Miguez is the latest GOP challenger to Cassidy, who has been chastised by his party for being one ofseven GOP senatorswho voted to convict PresidentDonald Trumpduring his2021 impeachment trial. "Phony politicians like Bill Cassidy can't shoot straight," Miguez, 43, says in avideo on social mediato announce his campaign. In the video, Miguez, a champion competitive sharpshooter, shows off his skills — using various firearms and, literally, aiming at targets brandishing words like "Marxism," "food dyes" and "crime." Miguez served in the state House for more than eight years and was elected to the Senate in 2023. A staunch advocate for the Second Amendment, Miguez has sponsored gun-related bills, including a measure that allows residents, 18 and older, tocarry concealed handgunswithout a permit. Over the past year, he has also authored legislation that aids in federal crackdowns ofimmigration enforcement. In the Statehouse, Miguez has demonstrated a confrontational approach during bill debates — a tactic that was apparent in his campaign announcement. "I'm running because the American Dream is worth fighting for -- and DC phonies forget that. Bill Cassidy betrayed our state, our President, and our principles," Miguez posted on X. Cassidy, who is in his second term, is up for reelection in reliably red Louisiana, where residents overwhelmingly supported Trump in the past three presidential elections. While Cassidy, 67, won his last reelection handily, he has not been on the ballot since his controversial vote to convict Trump over the riot at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. Cassidy's vote resulted in the lawmaker being trashed on social media and censured by Louisiana Republicans. Recent actions by Cassidy suggest he's working tomend ties with Trump loyalists. He has emphasized his commitment to work with the president to advance his agenda and showed support for many of Trump's cabinet appointments. Most notably, in February Cassidy joined Republicans on the Senate Finance Committee to advance Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s nomination as secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services. Cassidy currently has a significant fundraising advantage, with more than $7.4 million in his campaign account at the end of the first quarter. But in the eyes of some, Cassidy's past actions make him vulnerable. In addition to Miguez,Louisiana Treasurer John Fleming, who served in Trump's first administration, has announced that he will run for the Senate seat. The 73-year-old has also lambasted Cassidy. Republican U.S. Rep. Julia Letlow is alsorumored to be considering runningagainst Cassidy. A big change in the upcoming election is Louisiana'snew closed primaries. Until the new system was adopted this year, congressional candidates from all parties seeking the same office ran on the same ballot regardless of party affiliation. In the state's unique"jungle primary,"voters could choose any candidate, even if they do not align with the voters' registered party. If a candidate earned more than 50% of the total vote then they would win the office outright. If no one reached the threshold, the top two finishers would face each other in a runoff. Under the new primary system, only voters who are registered Republicans will be able to participate in the GOP Senate primary. The effect is seen as a potential challenge for Cassidy, who had benefited from the less-partisan nature of the old system. The election will take place November 3, 2026.

Sherman was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and booked into the King County Correctional Facility in Seattle in the early morning of Feb. 24, 2024, according to jail records previously obtained by USA TODAY Sports. RFK Jr. faces blowback from senators, former vaccine committee members after firingsNew Foto - RFK Jr. faces blowback from senators, former vaccine committee members after firings

Recently fired members of a committee that advises the federal government on immunization safety lashed out at Health and Human Services SecretaryRobert F. Kennedy Jr., saying that their terminations will limit access to vaccines and put American lives at risk. Kennedy last week abruptlydismissed all membersof the committee, which advises the Centers for Diseases Control on vaccine safety. Two days after hedissolved the committeeon June 9, Kennedy named eight new members to the Advisory Committee for Immunization Practices, including some who haveadvocated against vaccines. "We are deeply concerned that these destabilizing decisions, made without clear rationale, may roll back the achievements of U.S. immunization policy, impact people's access to lifesaving vaccines, and ultimately put U.S. families at risk of dangerous and preventable illnesses," the 17 former members wrote in an articlepublished in medical journal JAMA on June 16. The ACIP charter specifies that committee members serve overlapping terms to ensure continuity - and dismissing all the members at the same time "have stripped the program of the institutional knowledge and continuity that have been essential to its success over decades," wrote the members, whose committee recommendations also affect insurance coverage and safeguard broad access for vaccines. In announcing his decision to oust the members, Kennedy, a longtime vaccine skeptic, claimed a "clean sweep" was necessary to reestablish public confidence in vaccine science. The committee would "no longer function as a rubber stamp for industry profit-taking agendas," he said. That was the opposite of what Kennedy told Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-Louisiana, chair of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions, during his confirmation hearing to become Trump's cabinet member. "If confirmed, he will maintain the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices without changes," Cassidy said during the hearing. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), ranking member of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions called foran immediate bipartisan investigationinto the terminations. "For decades, Secretary Kennedy has spread lies and dangerous conspiracy theories about safe and effective vaccines that have saved millions of lives," Sanders wrote in a letter to Cassidy. "Unfortunately, since he has been confirmed I am very concerned that Secretary Kennedy is doubling down on his war on science and disinformation campaign that will lead to preventable illness and death." Additionally,22 senators, including Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, and Sen. Raphael Warnock of Georgia, wrote a joint letter to Kennedy saying they are "troubled" by the appointment of several members to the committee who have a "documented history of anti-vaccine ideology and peddling misinformation." Dr. Robert Malone, one of the new Kenendy appointees is a virologist and vaccine skeptic who became well-known during the COVID-19 pandemic for spreading misinformation about the virus on conservative shows and podcasts. The physician-scientist and biochemist has falsely claimed spikeproteins from COVID-19 mRNA vaccines often cause permanent damage to children's vital organs. Firing every member of the committee ahead of their next meeting scheduled for June 25-27 "eliminates the advisory board's ability to debate and make well-informed recommendations, putting American lives at risk," the senators wrote. Trump nominates Jeanine Pirro for full term as DC's top federal prosecutorNew Foto - Trump nominates Jeanine Pirro for full term as DC's top federal prosecutor

PresidentDonald Trumpis nominating former Fox News host and interim US Attorney Jeanine Pirro to a full term as the top federal prosecutor in Washington, DC, according to a White House news release. Her nomination for a four-year term has been sent to the Senate, the release says. She wasnamed to the positionon an interim basis last month after Trump's first pick, Ed Martin, faced what appeared to beinsurmountable pushbackfrom Republicans on Capitol Hill. Pirro, a longtime Trump ally, is a former judge and district attorney for Westchester County in New York. Until being tapped by Trump, she had not held a position in the justice system since 2005, when she left the district attorney's office and began her career on television. CNN'sKFileon Monday reviewed Pirro's radio shows and found that she has repeatedly endorsed criminal investigations into Trump's perceived political enemies, including federal prosecutors, local officials and judges involved in his various legal cases. In addition to her attacks on federal law enforcement and the judiciary, Pirro has spent years promoting false and inflammatory claims. She downplayed the January 6 violence as a political "narrative," calling for a Capitol Police officer and DOJ officials to be investigated. Pirro also boosted unfounded claims that the 2020 election was stolen and was one of several hosts named in theDominion Voting Systems defamation lawsuitagainst Fox News. The lawsuit was later settled by Fox News for more than $787 million. With her nomination, Pirro will have to provide the Senate with a detailed disclosure of every media appearance she's made, which would include hundreds of hours of public comments on TV and the radio over the years. That disclosure process is what ultimately helped sink Martin's nomination, which was withdrawn last month after he failed to disclose hundreds of his own media appearances, including those thatundercut his disavowalof an alleged Nazi sympathizer he had repeatedly praised and interviewed. Trump later announced that Martin would move to the Department of Justice as the director of the Weaponization Working Group, as well as associate deputy attorney general and pardon attorney.
