Aerial attacks between Israel and Iran continued overnight into Monday, marking a fourth day of strikes following Israel's Friday attack. That surprise operation hit at the heart of Iran's nuclear program, striking key facilities and killing several nuclear scientists as well as high-ranking military leaders, according to Israeli officials. The U.S. did not provide any military assistance or have any involvement in Israel's Friday strike, a U.S. official told ABC News. President Donald Trump told ABC News on Sunday, "It's possible we could get involved." Israel is "not planning to change the regime in Iran," Israel Defense Forces spokesperson Brig. Gen. Effie Defrin told ABC News' Ian Pannell in Tel Aviv on Monday. "Our military targets, our military goals are to remove this threat, to remove the threat of a nuclear bomb over Israel and the ballistic missiles, and of course the proliferation of terror all over the region," Defrin said."It's up to the Iranian people to change the regime, not to us," Defrin said. "We are removing this threat. This is why we paved the way to Iran."Asked about the growing toll on Israeli civilians as Iran retaliates, Defrin said, "Can you imagine what would have happened if this happens when Iran has nuclear capabilities?" He then suggested that Israel had "only a matter of days" in which to prevent such a development.Attacks in Iran, Defrin continued, will go on for "as far as we're concerned."-ABC News' Ian Pannell, Morgan Winsor, Dana Savir, Alessandro Pavone and Gabriella Abdul-Hakim Israel's control of the airspace over Tehran represents a "change in the entire" military "campaign," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in comments on Monday. "When we control the skies over Tehran, we are striking these goals, the regime's targets, in contrast to the criminal regime of Iran that targets our citizens and comes to kill children and women," Netanyahu said."We are telling the citizens of Tehran: 'Get out' -- and we are acting," Netanyahu said.At least 224 people have been killed in Iran since Israel launched its first strikes there on Friday, according to Iranian authorities. The agency, he added, is ready to respond to an emergency within an hour and will remain present in Iran. Former President Barack Obama took tosocial mediaon Sunday to address immigration as protests against President Donald Trump's overhaul of immigration and sweeping ICE raids continue to grip the nation. Obama drew attention to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which was established in 2012 during his tenure. "DACA was an example of how we can be a nation of immigrants and a nation of laws. And it's an example worth remembering today, when families with similar backgrounds who just want to live, work, and support their communities, are being demonized and treated as enemies," Obama said. MORE: Trump has made a number of claims about the LA protests. Here is the context. The immigration policy allows some children of immigrants brought to the U.S. to receive a renewable, two-year period of deferred action from deportation and be eligible for a work permit. The program has since been subject to legal challenges and attempts to dismantle it by the Trump administration. It currently remains in effect for those who were already recipients. The former president's comments about immigration come as protests in Los Angeles stretch into the eighth day, seeing both peaceful marches and clashes with police. MORE: Obama, Trump and other political leaders react to Biden's cancer diagnosis Obama called for America to fix its immigration system "while still recognizing our common humanity and treating each other with dignity and respect." "In fact, it's the only way we ever will," Obama said. 'Nation of immigrants and a nation of laws': Obama speaks out about immigrationoriginally appeared onabcnews.go.com

Spaun began his Father's Day with an early-morning trip to CVS to get medication for his daughter, who'd been up all night with an upset stomach. He ended his Father's Day bywinning the U.S. Open in unforgettable fashion. Way to go, dad. How it happened:Spaun was the leader after Round 1 and entered Sunday's final round in a three-way tie for second, one stroke off the lead. But after bogeying five of his first six holes, the 34-year-old appeared to have played himself out of contention before he could even make the turn. Then the skies opened up above Oakmont Country Club, leading to a 96-minute weather delay that proved to be exactly what Spaun needed. "I changed my outfit. I'm like,I'm done wearing those clothes. I just needed to reset everything," he said. Reset he did. While the rest of the field struggled once play resumed, Spaun thrived in the wet conditions andbegan mounting a comeback, one hole at a time. After anincredible driveled to a birdie on No. 17, he walked up to the 18th tee box needing a par to win. The putt of a lifetime:Spaun did one better than par, sinking an unforgettable 65-foot birdie puttto win his first major and finish 1-under for the tournament, officially beating the unbeatable Oakmont. Every other golfer finished over-par. This was the right stroke, in the right tournament, at the right time, for the right player. This was one of those why-we-watch moments, a triumph in the evening fog, a victory for the little guy in a sport increasingly tilted against the little guys. This wasn't a storybook finish — storybooks only wish they could be this good. — Jay Busbee, Yahoo Sports Rise to glory:Spaun grew up playing at a local par-3 track in Southern California, walked on at San Diego State and spent years toiling in the minors before finally reaching the PGA Tour, where he had a grand total of one win in 235 starts entering the weekend. It's hard to imagine a more fitting champion for golf's most meritocratic major, which has a way of celebrating the underdogs and rewarding the grinders. The last word:"I wasn't really groomed to be a professional golfer. I didn't get put through academies. I didn't play [Juniors]. I played local stuff," said Spaun, who stillpractices at munis alongside everyday golfersto keep himself grounded. "I just kept going, one foot in front of the other … and now here I am with the U.S. Open trophy." The Red Sox shocked the baseball world on Sunday when theyshipped slugger Rafael Devers to the Giantsin a blockbuster trade that ends a months-long position change saga in Boston. The trade:The Giants are sending two pitchers (Jordan Hicks and Kyle Harrison) and two minor leaguers (James Tibbs and Jose Bello) to the Red Sox in exchange for Devers. San Francisco has reportedly agreed to take on all of his contract, which will pay him $254.5 million through the 2033 season. How we got here:From Yahoo Sports' Russell Dorsey: The timeline of Devers' tenure with the Red Sox organization goes back more than a decade to when Boston signed him as an international free agent at the age of 16. He then made his debut in 2017 at age 20, and it wasn't long before his impact was being felt. After the trade of Mookie Betts in 2020 and the departure of Xander Bogaerts in free agency in 2022, the organization looked to Devers to be the new face of the franchise, inking him to a 10-year, $313.5 million extension in January 2023 and committing to him for the long term. But all those warm and fuzzy feelings quickly evaporated this season after Boston acquired third baseman Alex Bregman in free agency and the team told Devers he would be their permanent designated hitter going forward. Devers, who isn't the best defensive third baseman by any metric, was not shy about voicing his displeasure. And it didn't end there. After first baseman Triston Casas was lost for the season, the Red Sox asked Devers if he'd be willing to play first base. Having already moved once, he was less than happy about that request and ultimately told the Red Sox no. That's how we get to Sunday. How does Devers fit on the Giants?Offensively, the fit is obvious: Devers has been one of baseball's best hitters for years and is enjoying a career year, ranking sixth in OBP (.401) and 12th in OPS (.905). But where will he play on defense? The dynamic in San Francisco isnot much clearer than it was in Boston, writes Yahoo Sports' Jake Mintz. The Panthers have had to start on the road in every series this postseason. That hasn't been a problem for the defending champs, whose dominance away from home has them one win away from their second straight title. Road warriors:Florida's 5-2 victory over Edmonton in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final was the team's10th road win this postseason, tied for the most ever in a single playoffs. They're now 10-3 away from home, compared to 5-4 at Amerant Bank Arena. Round 1 (vs. TB):3-0 on the road, 1-1 at home Round 2 (vs. TOR):2-2 on the road, 2-1 at home East Final (vs. CAR):3-0 on the road, 1-1 at home Cup Final (vs. EDM):2-1 on the road, 1-1 at home What they're saying:The Panthers went 8-4 on the road in 2023 and 7-4 during last year's title run, so this is becoming a bit of a theme. "Our game travels," defenseman Seth Jones told The Athletic ($) after Game 2. "We feel comfortable on the road," added star winger Matthew Tkachuk. "We've said it a bunch: it's that us-against-the-world mindset." Marchand matches Lemieux:Brad Marchand, 37, scored his fifth and sixth goals of the series on Saturday, the most in a Cup Final since 1988. This is also the second time he's scored 5+ goals in a Cup Final (2011 with the Bruins). The only other player to do that over the past 50 years? Desperate Italy bucking the trend of picking more established coaches with hiring of GattusoNew Foto - Desperate Italy bucking the trend of picking more established coaches with hiring of Gattuso

ROME (AP) — It used to be that the coach of Italy's soccer team was someone who had a long list of managerial achievements and was nearer to the end of a career than the start. Not so withGennaro Gattuso. But these are desperate times for Italy, the four-time champion that is facing a real possibility of failing to qualify for a third consecutive World Cup. Luciano Spalletti was firedafterItaly lost its opening qualifier 3-0 to Norwayand when Claudio Ranieri rejected the job, the Italian federation turned to Gattuso — a member of the last Azzurri squad to win the World Cup in 2006. The hope is that the 47-year-old Gattuso can transmit the same level of combativeness and determination that he used to display as a gritty midfielder to a group of players who have shown more willingness to sweat it out for the clubs paying their contracts than the national team. Never mind that Gattuso has won only one trophy in his 12-year coaching career: an Italian Cup with Napoli five years ago. Because wherever he's gone, he has had a no-nonsense and no-filter approach at a series of clubs in crisis. So it's hard to imagine Gattuso dealing withFrancesco Acerbi's refusal of an Italy call up for the Norway gamein the same manner that Spalletti did — by mostly brushing it off. Verbal tirade at Crete When Gattuso didn't like the way he was being portrayed in the Greek media as coach of financially struggling club Crete in 2014, he lashed out in a verbal tirade during a memorable news conference. "I didn't come here for (a) holiday," he said then. "One year here is 10 years in another club. And this is good for me." Gattuso then resigned at Crete before he was convinced to change his mind and return a day later. At his next job with Pisa, he and Foggia counterpart Roberto De Zerbi nearly came to blows in a heated argument during a playoff win to earn promotion to Serie B after Gattuso was hit on the head by a bottle thrown from the stands. And just last season at Croatian club Hajduk Split, Gattuso removed star player Ivan Perisic from the team for disciplinary reasons. Confronting Beckham As a player, too, Gattuso never shied away from standing up to the biggest names. During the match in which he scored his only international goal — against England in 2000 — a 22-year-old Gattuso criticized David Beckham for alleged diving, telling the famous midfielder directly to his face, "This is not a swimming pool." Qualifying bonus While financial details were not announced, Gattuso was reportedly given only a one-year contract with Italy worth 800,000 euros (slightly under $1 million). But the deal includes a 1 million euro ($1.16 million) bonus if Italy qualifies for the World Cup, Italian media reported. Teammates from 2006 Gattuso won't be on his own. Former Italy goalkeeper and captain Gianluigi Buffon remains the squad's team manager. Leonardo Bonucci, the former defender who was captain of the squad that Gattuso coached at AC Milan, will be an assistant coach. Andrea Barzagli, another member of the 2006 team, appears set to be named coach of Italy's under-20 or under-21 squad. And Cesare Prandelli, who coached Italy to the final of the 2012 European Championship, is being tipped to take charge of the federation's development of young talents. Gattuso's debut will come against Estonia in September. ___ AP soccer:https://apnews.com/hub/soccer

India and Cyprus to step up defense, maritime and cybersecurity cooperation, Indian PM saysNew Foto - India and Cyprus to step up defense, maritime and cybersecurity cooperation, Indian PM says

NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) — India will step up its defense ties with Cyprus through collaboration between the two countries' respective defense industries, the Indian prime minister said Monday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi didn't offer details, but he said talks would begin on boosting bilateral maritime and cybersecurity cooperation. He said after talks with Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides that the two countries would also set up an information exchange mechanism geared toward combatting the threat of terrorism. Modi's two-day visit to Cyprus, ahead of his trip to Canada for the G7 summit, is the first by an Indian prime minister in more than two decades. In a joint declaration, the two countries also pledged to expand maritime cooperation through more frequent Indian navy calls to Cypriot ports and looking at enhancing joint maritime training and search and rescue operations. Modi underscored the role of the envisionedIndia-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC)as a means to usher peace and prosperity in the Middle East. Cyprus figures to act asthe linchpin between India, the Middle East and Europe in the trade, energy and digital connectivity corridor, given the island nation's geographical location as the nearest European Union country to the Middle East and India. Christodoulides said Cyprus was India's "gateway into Europe" as a base for Indian businesses. He pledged to help implement initiatives such as IMEC that will connect India through specific infrastructure works with the Gulf, the Mediterranean and the European continent. The Cypriot president said India-EU ties and an upgraded free trade agreement would be among his country's top priorities when Cyprus assumes the 27-member bloc's rotating presidency in the first half of 2026. The Indian prime minister hailed the visit as a harbinger of a new era of India-Cyprus relations built on shared values and deep historic ties that "have been tested time and again." Former British colonies Cyprus and India were among members of the Non-Aligned Movement, a collection of nations which opted out of the Cold War choice of allegiance to either the West or the Communist bloc.

Man suspected of shooting 2 Minnesota lawmakers is in custody after surrendering to policeNew Foto - Man suspected of shooting 2 Minnesota lawmakers is in custody after surrendering to police

BELLE PLAINE, Minn. (AP) — The mansuspected of killinga Minnesota lawmaker and wounding another crawled to officers in surrender Sunday after they located him in the woods near his home, bringing an end to a massive, nearly two-day search that put the entire state on edge. Vance Boelterwas arrested and chargedwith two counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder. Jail records show Boelter was scheduled to appear in court Monday afternoon. He is accused of posing as a police officer and fatally shootingformer Democratic House Speaker Melissa Hortmanand her husband, Mark, in their home early Saturday in the northern Minneapolis suburbs. Authorities say he also shot Sen. John Hoffman, a Democrat, and his wife, Yvette. They were injured at their residence about 9 miles (about 15 kilometers) away. "One man's unthinkable actions have altered the state of Minnesota," Democratic Gov. Tim Walz said at a news conference after Boelter's arrest. The search for Boelterwas the "largest manhunt in the state's history," Brooklyn Park Police Chief Mark Bruley said. It began when Brooklyn Park officers went to check on Hortman's home and saw her husband gunned down before the shooter fled. Authorities on Sunday located a vehicle Boelter was using abandoned in rural Sibley County, where he lived, and a police officer reported that he believed he saw Boelter running into the woods, Bruley said. Police set up a large perimeter and called in 20 different tactical teams, divvying up the area and searching for him. During the search, police said they received information confirming someone was in the woods and searched for hours, using a helicopter and officers on foot, until they found Boelter. He surrendered to police, crawling out to officers in the woods before he was handcuffed and taken into custody in a field, authorities said. Jail records show Boelter was booked into the Hennepin County Jail at 1:02 a.m. Central Time Monday and include two mug shots, one from the front and one from the side, of Boelter wearing an orange prison shirt. A targeted attack Drew Evans, superintendent of the state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, said the violence likely would've continued had Brooklyn Park offices not checked on Hortman's home, causing Boelter to flee. The Hoffmans were attacked first at their home in Champin early Saturday. A criminal complaint unsealed after Boelter's arrest indicated their adult daughter called 911 just after 2 a.m. to say a masked person had come to the door and shot her parents. After police in nearby Brooklyn Park learned that a lawmaker had been shot, they sent patrol officers to check on the Hortmans' home. Brooklyn Park police officers arrived just in time to see Boelter shoot Mark Hortman through the open door of the home, the complaint says. It says they exchanged gunfire with Boelter, who fled inside the home before escaping the scene. Melissa Hortman was found dead inside, the complaint said. Authorities said Boelter posed as a police officer, even allegedly altering a vehicle to make it look like a police car. No details on motive Authorities did not give a motive as they announced Boelter's arrest. A list of about 70 names was found in writings recovered from the fake police vehicle that was left at the crime scene, said two law enforcement officials who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss details of the ongoing investigation. The writings and list of names included prominent state and federal lawmakers and community leaders, along with abortion rights advocates and information about health care facilities, according to the officials. A Minnesota official told AP lawmakers who had been outspoken in favor of abortion rights were on the list. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because the investigation was ongoing. Boelter is a former political appointee who served on the same state workforce development board as Hoffman, records show, though it was not clear if or how well they knew each other. Around 6 a.m. Saturday, Boelter texted friends to apologize for his actions, though he didn't say what he had done. "I'm going to be gone for a while. May be dead shortly, so I just want to let you know I love you guys both and I wish it hadn't gone this way," he wrote in messages viewed by AP. An escalation in political violence The shootingscomeaspolitical leaders nationwidehave been attacked, harassed and intimidated amid deep political divisions.Lawmakers said they were disturbedby the attacks as Twin Cities residents mourned. "This cannot be the norm. It cannot be the way that we deal with our political differences," Walz said Sunday. On Sunday evening, U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar shared a statement from Yvette Hoffman expressing appreciation for the outpouring of public support. "John is enduring many surgeries right now and is closer every hour to being out of the woods," Yvette Hoffman said in atext that Klobuchar postedon social media. "He took 9 bullet hits. I took 8 and we are both incredibly lucky to be alive. We are gutted and devastated by the loss of Melissa and Mark." Brightly colored flowers and small American flags were placed Sunday on the gray marbled stone of the Minnesota State Capitol along with a photo ofthe Hortmans. People scrawled messages on small notes including, "You were our leader through the hardest of times. Rest in Power." Pam Stein came with flowers and knelt by the memorial. An emotional Stein called Hortman an "absolute powerhouse" and "the real unsung hero of Minnesota government." ___ Karnowski reported from Minneapolis, and Balsamo and Durkin Richer reported from Washington.
