Van Gisbergen's emotional win in Mexico City locks him into NASCAR playoffsNew Foto - Van Gisbergen's emotional win in Mexico City locks him into NASCAR playoffs

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Very little went right for Shane Van Gisbergen in the buildup to NASCAR's first international Cup Series points-paying race of the modern era. A mechanical issue on takeoff forced his team charter to abort the initial journey to Mexico City. He arrived at the venue Friday, a day late, and after winning the pole Saturday, the New Zealander fell seriously ill. He was sleeping on the floor of his hauler before Sunday's race, unsure he'd be able to physically complete the 100-lap event at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez. But there's something special about the Kiwi and new venues, especially in the rain, and he salvaged the weekend by winning on the road course to earn an automatic berth into NASCAR's playoffs. Van Gisbergen led 60 of 100 laps and beat Christopher Bell by 16.567 seconds. "I tried to treat it like when I go to Asia, just drink bottled water and be careful in the shower and brush your teeth with bottled water, but I just went downhill," Van Gisbergen said. "Couldn't keep anything in. Everything just went straight through me. I felt really queasy and my mind was there, but my body just had so much pressure in my stomach. Crazy weekend and everyone dug deep." It was the second Cup Series victory of his career. He won in his NASCAR debut at the inaugural 2023 street course race in Chicago — a victory that changed his career trajectory. Van Gisbergen left Australia V8 Supercars, where he was a multiple champion, for a full-time move to NASCAR. Although he had success in the Xfinity Series — he won three races last year as Trackhouse Racing developed him for a Cup Series ride — Van Gisbergen has struggled this year at NASCAR's top level. He started the race ranked 33rd in the Cup standings with only one top-10 finish through the first 15 races of the season. But his victory in Mexico City revived his season and gives him a shot to race for the Cup Series championship. "It means everything to us, this is why I'm here," Van Gisbergen said. "I am getting better and more competitive. We're really making a lot of progress." Van Gisbergen celebrated in his traditional rugby-style way — he drop-kicked a signed football into the grandstands and then said he had recovered enough to enjoy "some Red Bulls mixed with adult beverages" later Sunday. Van Gisbergen benefitted from an early pop-up rain shower on the first lap of the race because he's an exceptionally skilled driver on a wet surface. His win at Chicago was in monsoon-like conditions. Trackhouse now has two of its drivers — Ross Chastain and Van Gisbergen — locked into the playoffs. But it was a bit of a disappointment for Daniel Suarez, the Monterrey native who thrilled the hometown crowd with a win in the Xfinity Series race on Saturday, as he failed to challenge his teammate for the win and finished 19th. "I wish I was in the mix fighting for it a little more, but it just wasn't in the cards," Suarez said. "Every single thing about this weekend exceeded my expectations, the people, the fans, the sponsors, the excitement, the energy. "I had expectations for this weekend, not the results but, like, the event, and I can tell you that I personally exceeded those expectations," he added. "So very, very happy for that. Very blessed. I hope that we can do it many more times." Suarez, who appeared to be blinking back tears as he sang along with the Mexican national anthem in pre-race ceremonies, desperately wanted the home win in this contract year with Trackhouse. He was the face of this event as NASCAR ventured outside the U.S. with its top series for the first time since 1958. Bell finished second in a Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing. He was followed by Chase Elliott in a Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet. Alex Bowman, who hurt his back in a crash last week at Michigan, withstood the pain for a fourth-place finish in his Hendrick Chevrolet. Michael McDowell of Spire Motorsports was fifth and followed by John Hunter Nemechek in a Toyota for Legacy Motor Club. Chase Briscoe of JGR was seventh and followed by Cole Custer for Haas Factory as the highest-finishing Ford driver. William Byron of Hendrick was ninth and Chris Buescher of RFK Racing rounded out the top 10. Chevrolets took five of the top-10 positions, including the victory. Stenhouse vs. Hocevar The ongoing feud between Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Carson Hocevar continued after the race as a furious Stenhouse reached inside Hocevar's cockpit on pit road. He seemed to grab at Hocevar as he spoke to him, then slapped at his helmet as Stenhouse walked away. It wasn't clear what Stenhouse was upset about, but he's been furious with Hocevar for three consecutive weeks, dating to contact between the two at Nashville. Hocevar's in-car camera captured the audio of the confrontation. "I'm going to beat your (butt)," Stenhouse threatened. "You're a lap down, you've got nothing to do. Why you run right into me? It's the second time. I'm going to beat your (butt) when we get back to the States." Hocevar said after the race he couldn't really hear Stenhouse. "I know he was very mad and I was very apologetic," Hocevar said. "I got in the marbles and slid a lot longer than I expected to. Number one, not somebody I would ever want to hit again. But number two, I was basically just logging laps. I tried to turn left and avoid him. Just a really sloppy day for me." Gordon gives command NASCAR Hall of Famer Jeff Gordon was selected to give the command for drivers to start their engines and admitted before the race he'd done some practicing. Why? Because he incorporated both English and Spanish in his delivery of the most famous words in racing. "Hola Mexico!" Gordon shouted. "Pilotos start your engines! Up Next NASCAR races next Sunday at Pocono Raceway, where Ryan Blaney won last year. ___ AP auto racing:https://apnews.com/hub/auto-racing

Pence says Trump shouldn't take advice from Putin on Iran-Israel conflictNew Foto - Pence says Trump shouldn't take advice from Putin on Iran-Israel conflict

WASHINGTON ―Former Vice President Mike Pencesaid his ex-boss,President Donald Trump, should not be taking advice from Russian PresidentVladimir Putinabout the conflict between Israel and Iran. Pence's June 15 remarks on CNN's "State of the Union"came after Trump said he discussed Iranand Israel in a phone call with Putin on Saturday, as the two countries have traded attacks following Israel's widespread June 13 air strikes targeting Iran's nuclear program. "As Vladimir Putin continues his brutal and unprovoked invasion in Ukraine using drones provided by Iran," Pence said. "I would say respectfully to the administration, we ought to be looking elsewhere than Vladimir Putin for advice on how to deal with this situation." Trump presidency:Trump says Putin called to wish him a happy birthday ‒ and talk about Iran Detailing his one-hour June 14 call with Putin, Trump said Iran is a "country (Putin) knows very well." Trump added that Putin "feels, as do I, this war in Israel-Iran should end, to which I explained, his war should also end." Trump has embraced a friendly relationship with Putin, a stark departure fromformer President Joe Biden, who helped rally much of the world to condemn Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Trump has blamed both Putin, long considered a U.S. adversary, and Ukrainian PresidentVolodymyr Zelenskyyfor Russia's war in Ukraine. 'Full strength and might':Trump warns Iran against attacking the United States Pence, a staunch defender of Israel, said the United States needs to continue supporting Israel "with the support they need." He also applauded Trump for the president's statement earlier on Sunday, warning that the "full strength and might" of the U.S. militarywould be used if Iran attacks the United States "in any way, shape or form." Pence ended his political relationship with Trump following the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. As vice president, Pence refused to act on pressure from Trump to reject electoral votes submitted by states before certifyingJoe Biden's 2020 election victory. Trump says he hopes Israel and Iran can strike dealNew Foto - Trump says he hopes Israel and Iran can strike deal

By Jeff Mason WASHINGTON (Reuters) -President Donald Trump said on Sunday that he hopes Israel and Iran can broker a deal but said sometimes countries have to fight it out first. Talking to reporters as he left for the G7 summit in Canada, Trump said the U.S. will continue to support the defense of Israel but declined to say if he asked the U.S. ally to pause strikes on Iran. "I hope there's going to be a deal. I think it's time for a deal and we'll see what happens. Sometimes they have to fight it out, but we're gonna see what happens," Trump said. Israel and Iran launched fresh attacks on Sunday, killing and wounding civilians and raising concerns of a broader regional conflict, with both militaries urging civilians on the opposing side to take precautions against further strikes. Vets crucial as Pacers, Thunder eye upper hand in Game 5New Foto - Vets crucial as Pacers, Thunder eye upper hand in Game 5

Moments like these are why the Oklahoma City Thunder traded for Alex Caruso in the offseason. Heading into Monday's Game 5 of the NBA Finals at home against the Indiana Pacers, with the best-of-seven series tied 2-2, Caruso is as big of a reason as any why the Thunder are two wins from the franchise's first title since moving to Oklahoma City. Caruso played in just 54 games during the regular season, starting just three, and played 30 or more minutes just once. But in the postseason, particularly this series, the veteran guard's presence has expanded. Caruso has averaged 14.8 points, 2.5 steals and 29.5 minutes per game in the series and while he's not in the starting lineup, he's on the floor during critical situations late in close games. "He's a gamer," Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander said of Caruso. "You plug him in anywhere, any lineup, feels like any group, he makes a difference. Makes everyone around him better. He is always talking. He always knows where we're supposed to be, where the other team is supposed to be. "He has instincts that are special. I don't think you can teach things like that. He just knows where the ball is going, where a rebound is bouncing to, how to get a deflection, timely steals. He just has an amazing feel for the game and is an insane competitor." After not scoring more than 19 points during the regular season, Caruso has scored 20 points thrice in the playoffs, including twice in the Finals. He had 20 points on 7-of-9 shooting in Oklahoma City's 111-104 victory in Game 4 in Indianapolis. Caruso said his secret has been approaching every moment the same. "I want to win," Caruso said. "I don't care if it's (a) pickup (game) in September before training camp. I don't care if it's Game 45, 50, before All-Star break. If it's the Finals and you're down 2-1, I want to win. That's what I'm focused on." Caruso is the only player on the Thunder with Finals experience before this season, having been a part of the Lakers' 2020 title. While their roles are significantly different, Pascal Siakam has added a similar level of experience for the Pacers, having been a part of Toronto's 2019 title. Siakam said that experience has helped him this time around. "On the floor, I was one of the guys that would go and get things to happen for us, but off the court, I was year three," Siakam said. "We had so many veterans on our team that had been through way more than I could ever imagine as a player. ... I think this time around, just having been one of those guys that has been there or one of the few guys that has been there, and I'm year nine or 10 or whatever, it's like I have way more to say and I can impact not only by saying things but also on the floor." While the Thunder are looking to keep building momentum after outscoring Indiana 12-1 in the final three minutes of Game 4, the Pacers are looking to put away the disappointing loss after letting a chance to take firm command of the series slip away. "The biggest thing is you can't let one spiral into two," Indiana star Tyrese Haliburton said. "You can't take the disappointment of that game and let it be a snowball effect. You have to be ready to go for Game 5 here, again in a hostile environment. We are both two games away. Anything can happen here. So you have to move on as quickly as you can." The Thunder are in this position for the second time in the postseason, having beaten Denver in seven games in the second round after being tied 2-2 after four games. "Two wins and you get the job done," Gilgeous-Alexander said. "That's what I felt like I was focused on in the Denver series and we were able to do so, and same thing for this series." The Pacers haven't been in this position in this postseason, having led all three of their previous series 3-1 after four games. --Field Level Media

The final weekend of spring brought the summer heat with some wild activity around the MLB on Fathers' Day. The Boston Red Sox & Rafael Devers drama came to a conclusion Sunday as Boston shocked the baseball world and traded Devers to the San Francisco Giants. Receiving no big stars in return, might this just have been a salary dump to end the Devers/Red Sox drama? A stunned Jake and Jordan breakdown the trade and try to figure out what exactly Boston was thinking. Plus, they get into how it changes the Giants' roster and how the only team left in The Bay might plan to use their new star. Shohei Ohtani has been making plenty of pitching appearances, in practice, over the last few weeks while the rest of the baseball world anxiously anticipates his return to the mound. The Dodgers have been very non-committal as to when that return will be, but all of that changed Sunday night. The Dodgers announced Ohtani will make his pitching return Monday against the Padres. Jake and Jordan discuss why this move was made now, if it's the right one and what this means for the Dodgers going forward. There was a lot of action that happened over the weekend, including nine sweeps! The guys won't let you down as they go Turbo Mode to the max to cover every single series from the weekend. China gets boost in retail sales as export goods stay home, while tariffs hit factory outputNew Foto - China gets boost in retail sales as export goods stay home, while tariffs hit factory output

BANGKOK (AP) — China's economy managed a mixed economic performance in May, as retail sales jumped while factory output slowed in the face ofhigher U.S. tariffs. Data released Monday showed retail sales rose 6.4% from a year earlier, helped partly by promotions of products stranded as shipments were suspended due to highertariffs. A major online shopping festival also helped entice consumers to spend more. The June 18 shopping extravaganza started last month, with online sellers offering discounts on many products. But factory output and exports still took a hit from the tariffs, even though many of the increases in import duties have been delayed as Beijing and Washington negotiate a trade deal. Manufacturing output rose 5.8% in May year-on-year, the National Bureau of Statistics said, compared with 6.1% in April and 7.7% in March. Factory activity surged earlier in the year but has slowed as U.S.President Donald Trump'stariffs took effect. China earlier reported itsexportsto the United States fell 35% in May from a year earlier, while total exports rose 4.8% in May from a year earlier, much lower than economists' forecasts and down sharply from an 8.1% jump in April. Overall, economists said the world's second largest economy had weathered the threat of hikes in tariffs relatively well. But signs of weakness persist as a slump in the property market has yet to reverse. Deflation remains an issue, with consumer prices slipping 0.1% in May from a year earlier and 0.2% from the month before. Investment in real estate fell 10.7% in January-May compared to a year earlier, with housing prices in most cities falling slightly, the report showed. Spending on factory equipment and other fixed assets rose at a relatively slow 3.7% annual pace, it said. Apart from the "618" online shopping festival timed to celebrate the June 18, 1998, founding of e-commerce giant JD.com, China's program to subsidize trade-ins of household appliances, autos and other goods helped boost retail sales. But while retail sales rose 5% in January-May from a year earlier, consumers remain wary given weakness in the property sector, a vital repository of wealth for most families, Lynn Song of ING Economics said in a report. May's data was encouraging, she said, "However, a more sustainable consumption recovery will likely require a turnaround of consumer confidence, which remains much closer to historical lows than historical averages." The threat of higher tariffs that could further disrupt trade between the two biggest economies, remains, with anAug. 10 deadlinefor reaching an agreement followingtalks last weekin London. "With tariffs set to stay elevated and exporters facing broader constraints, export growth is likely to slow further by year-end," Zichun Huang of Capital Economics wrote in a commentary.
