BANGKOK (AP) — China's economy managed a mixed economic performance in May, as retail sales jumped while factory output slowed in the face ofhigher U.S. tariffs. Data released Monday showed retail sales rose 6.4% from a year earlier, helped partly by promotions of products stranded as shipments were suspended due to highertariffs. A major online shopping festival also helped entice consumers to spend more. The June 18 shopping extravaganza started last month, with online sellers offering discounts on many products. But factory output and exports still took a hit from the tariffs, even though many of the increases in import duties have been delayed as Beijing and Washington negotiate a trade deal. Manufacturing output rose 5.8% in May year-on-year, the National Bureau of Statistics said, compared with 6.1% in April and 7.7% in March. Factory activity surged earlier in the year but has slowed as U.S.President Donald Trump'stariffs took effect. China earlier reported itsexportsto the United States fell 35% in May from a year earlier, while total exports rose 4.8% in May from a year earlier, much lower than economists' forecasts and down sharply from an 8.1% jump in April. Overall, economists said the world's second largest economy had weathered the threat of hikes in tariffs relatively well. But signs of weakness persist as a slump in the property market has yet to reverse. Deflation remains an issue, with consumer prices slipping 0.1% in May from a year earlier and 0.2% from the month before. Investment in real estate fell 10.7% in January-May compared to a year earlier, with housing prices in most cities falling slightly, the report showed. Spending on factory equipment and other fixed assets rose at a relatively slow 3.7% annual pace, it said. Apart from the "618" online shopping festival timed to celebrate the June 18, 1998, founding of e-commerce giant JD.com, China's program to subsidize trade-ins of household appliances, autos and other goods helped boost retail sales. But while retail sales rose 5% in January-May from a year earlier, consumers remain wary given weakness in the property sector, a vital repository of wealth for most families, Lynn Song of ING Economics said in a report. May's data was encouraging, she said, "However, a more sustainable consumption recovery will likely require a turnaround of consumer confidence, which remains much closer to historical lows than historical averages." The threat of higher tariffs that could further disrupt trade between the two biggest economies, remains, with anAug. 10 deadlinefor reaching an agreement followingtalks last weekin London. "With tariffs set to stay elevated and exporters facing broader constraints, export growth is likely to slow further by year-end," Zichun Huang of Capital Economics wrote in a commentary.

Crawford hits a grand slam, Hancock tosses 7 scoreless and the Mariners beat the Guardians 6-0New Foto - Crawford hits a grand slam, Hancock tosses 7 scoreless and the Mariners beat the Guardians 6-0

SEATTLE (AP) — J.P. Crawford hit a grand slam, Emerson Hancock tossed seven scoreless innings and the Seattle Mariners beat the Cleveland Guardians 6-0 on Sunday to complete a sweep. After anRBI single by Miles Mastrobuoniwith one out in the second inning gave the Mariners an early advantage, Crawford opened up the floodgates while the bases were still loaded. Heturned on a hanging sliderfrom Luis Ortiz (3-8) and cranked a home run to right field for the fourth grand slam of his major league career. Mastrobuoni's RBI single alone would have been sufficient, though, for Hancock (3-2). The young right-hander turned in easily the best start of his major league career, yielding only two hits — both of them singles — while walking one batter and striking out four. Hancock was extremely efficient, needing only 85 pitches to make it through seven innings. Relievers Casey Legumina and Eduard Bazardo then followed Hancock to complete the combined shutout, which was just the Mariners' second of the season. They also blanked the Miami Marlins on April 26. Key moment Things went south for Ortiz after he issued a leadoff walk to Randy Arozarena in the second inning. He also walked outfielder Dominic Canzone before Crawford's grand slam gave the Mariners a lead they would not look back from. Key stat Since 2023, Crawford is hitting .593 with 42 RBIs when the bases are loaded. He is a career .400 hitter in such situations. Up next Seattle right-hander Logan Gilbert (1-1, 2.37) will return from the injured list and start for the Mariners on Monday against the Red Sox, who will send out right-hander Lucas Giolito (2-1, 5.45). The Guardians travel to San Francisco for a series-opener on Tuesday. ___ AP MLB:https://apnews.com/hub/MLB

USMNT gets relieving win in Gold Cup opener vs. Trinidad and TobagoNew Foto - USMNT gets relieving win in Gold Cup opener vs. Trinidad and Tobago

The 18,000-seat stadium wasdisconcertingly empty. The opponent, Trinidad and Tobago, was overmatched. The stage in CONCACAF Gold Cup Group D was relatively small, and thetroublesome "noise" surrounding the U.S. men's national teamwill remain loud. But enough with the caveats; the USMNT won a game Sunday, and stemmed the tide of negativity around the program, at least for now. It beat Trinidad, 5-0, in its Gold Cup opener at PayPal Park in San Jose, California. Malik Tillman, a potential World Cup starter rising at PSV Eindhoven, scored his first two goals for the national team. Diego Luna was once again active. Defenders were solid, substitutes were purposeful, and at long last, there were smiles. They were just what the USMNT needed afterfour consecutive losses, the program's worst run in 18 years.Back-to-back defeats at the CONCACAF Nations League finals in Marchsparked questions about the commitment and desire of key players. Many of those players are nowaway from the team, either to recover from injury or to compete at theClub World Cupor to rest. In their absence, a2-1 loss to Türkiyeand a 4-0 embarrassment by Switzerland deepened the malaise. And all the while, former players-turned-pundits inflamed the discourse around the team.Christian Pulisic's father took exception and clapped back. Pulisic himself felt the need to give an extended interview todefend his decision to opt out of the Gold Cup. It onlyraised more questions about his relationship with head coach Mauricio Pochettino, who has failed to lift the USMNT as promised. But on Sunday, temporarily, all was forgotten. The win over Trinidad at least distracted fans from all those distractions. Rather than talk about Pulisic, they could talk about the guys filling his positions: Tillman, Luna and the always-smooth Jack McGlynn, and a couple intriguing fullbacks. GOOOOAAAL@USMNT!! 🇺🇸Malik Tillman scores the opener!pic.twitter.com/n957dsL36z — FOX Soccer (@FOXSoccer)June 15, 2025 Of course, it is highly unlikely that any of them takes Pulisic's position permanently — unless Pochettino goes scorched earth and punishes his star. It is also highly unlikely that anything from Sunday's match matters in the long run — because the opponents, the Soca Warriors, provided so little real resistance. But it was still meaningful, because it was a relief. When the first goal went in, leaning back in his seat on the bench, Pochettino simply clenched his fist. When the second and third came, celebrations were muted, but, among the players, cleansing happiness was evident. BRACE FOR TILLMAN! 🇺🇸@USMNTup 2-0! 👏pic.twitter.com/CM6kVNq9YA — FOX Soccer (@FOXSoccer)June 15, 2025 And, who knows, perhaps this will be the start of Tillman's charge into an influential role. With Gio Reyna's career at a standstill, the USMNT has been starving for a central playmaker to complement Pulisic and Tim Weah; Tillman has the talent and the track record at his Dutch club to be that. Perhaps this is also the start of a turnaround and a successful summer. It will not be the World Cup dress rehearsal that many originally hoped, and it will not rebuild public buzz around the national team. But it can build positivity within the group, and absolutely could end with a Gold Cup title. Up next for the U.S. is a Thursday match against Saudi Arabia in Austin, Texas.

US pushes Vietnam to decouple from Chinese tech, sources sayNew Foto - US pushes Vietnam to decouple from Chinese tech, sources say

By Francesco Guarascio HANOI (Reuters) -The United States is pushing Vietnam in tariff talks to reduce the use of Chinese tech in devices that are assembled in the country before being exported to America, three people briefed on the matter said. Vietnam is home to large manufacturing operations of tech firms such as Apple and Samsung, which often rely on components made in China. Meta and Google also have contractors in Vietnam that produce goods such as virtual reality headsets and smartphones. The Southeast Asian nation has been organising meetings with local businesses to boost the supply of Vietnamese parts, with firms showing willingness to cooperate but also warning they would need time and technology to do so, according to one person with knowledge of the discussions. The Trump administration has threatened Vietnam with crippling tariffs of 46% which could significantly limit access for Vietnam-made goods to their main market and upend the Communist-run country's export-oriented growth model. Vietnam has been asked "to reduce its dependency on Chinese high-tech," said one person familiar with the discussions. "That is part of the restructuring of supply chains and would in turn reduce U.S. dependency on Chinese components," the person added. The ultimate objective is to speed up U.S. decoupling from Chinese high-tech while increasing Vietnam's industrial capacity, a second person said, citing virtual reality devices as an example of Vietnam-assembled products that are too dependent on Chinese technology. All sources declined to be identified as the discussions were confidential. Reuters was not able to learn if the U.S. has proposed numerical targets such as caps on Chinese content for "Made in Vietnam" goods or different tariff rates based on the amount of Chinese content. Apple, Samsung, Meta and Google did not reply to Reuters requests for comment. As the U.S.-imposed deadline of July 8 nears before the tariffs take effect, the timing and scope of a possible deal remain unclear. All sources stressed that while the U.S. has made broader requests for Vietnam to reduce its reliance on China, tackling the issue of Chinese high-tech content in exports was a key priority. Last year, China exported around $44 billion of tech such as electronics components, computers and phones to Vietnam, about 30% of its total exports to the country. Vietnam shipped $33 billion of tech goods to the United States or 28% of the U.S.-bound exports. Both flows are on the rise this year, according to Vietnam's customs data. Vietnam's trade ministry did not reply to Reuters requests for comment. Separate sources have previously said that U.S. demands were seen as "tough" and "difficult" by Vietnamese negotiators. The U.S. also wants Vietnam to crack down on the practice of shipping Chinese goods to America with misleading "Made in Vietnam" labels that draw lower duties - which Vietnam is also trying to heed. The ministry said on Sunday that a third round of talks last week in Washington ended with progress, but critical issues remain unresolved. Vietnam's ruling Communist Party chief To Lam intends to meet U.S. President Donald Trump in the United States, possibly in late June, officials with knowledge of the matter said. No date has been announced for the trip. The White House and Vietnam's foreign ministry did not respond to requests for comment on the possible visit. NOT TOO FAST Local firms attending meetings organised by the trade ministry in recent weeks expressed a general willingness to adapt, but many warned that instant changes "would destroy business", according to one of the sources. Vietnam has been slowly developing an industrial ecosystem with local suppliers but it has a long way to go before it can match China's advanced supply chains and cheaper pricing, industry executives say. "Vietnam is about 15–20 years behind China in somewhat fully replicating its supply chain scale and sophistication, but it's catching up fast, especially in key sectors like textiles and electronics," said Carlo Chiandone, a Vietnam-based supply chain expert. Abrupt changes to existing practices may hurt Vietnam's delicate relationship with China, which is both a major investor in its Southeast Asian neighbour and a source of security concerns. Who Is Vance Boelter? Minnesota Lawmakers Shooting Suspect CaughtNew Foto - Who Is Vance Boelter? Minnesota Lawmakers Shooting Suspect Caught

This image provided by the FBI on Saturday, June 14, 2025, shows a poster with photos of suspect Vance L. Boelter. Credit - FBI—AP Vance Luther Boelter, the 57-year-old man suspected ofshooting two Minnesota lawmakers and their spousesat their residences in the early hours of Saturday morning, was taken into custody Sunday evening, authorities announced. Boelter's apprehension ends what Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz called a "complex and dangerous manhunt," which involved local, state, and federal law enforcement officials. At apress conference Sunday night, Walz thanked the authorities involved for spending "Father's Day away from their families to deliver justice for Melissa and Mark Hortman and their children who spent this Father's Day alone." Drew Evans, superintendent of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, told reporters that Boelter was arrested under a state criminal warrant and charged with the murders of state representative Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark as well as the shootings of state senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette. Federal authorities are considering additional federal charges. Hortman and her husband were killed at their residence in Brooklyn Park in the early hours of Saturday morning. A short while before, the Hoffmans had been targeted at their home in nearby Champlin, where they were shot multiple times but survived the attack. Police discovered the couple after responding to a 911 call at around 2 a.m. local time. They have since undergone surgeries and are recovering in hospital. The FBI had earlier placed Boelter on itsMost-Wanted list, describing him as having gray hair and brown eyes with a 6 ft., 1 in. height and weighing about 220 lbs. Per the FBI, the suspect was impersonating a police officer when he carried out the assaults. Additional reports suggest he may have been wearing a realistic-looking latex mask. Minnesota's Commissioner of Public Safety Bob Jacobson said at the press conference that Boelter "exploited the trust our uniforms are meant to represent," adding that the "betrayal is deeply disturbing to those of us who wear the badge with honor and responsibility." When officers searched a fake police vehicle, believed to have been used by the suspect, on site near Hortman's residence, they found a "manifesto," which named a number of local lawmakers and organizations (including Hoffman and Hortman). This led to fears the suspect may have had additional targets in mind. Authorities said they are confident Boelter acted alone. Walz decried how one man's "unthinkable actions have altered the state of Minnesota" and promised that Boelter will "serve justice." Walz also emphasized that "this cannot be the norm. It cannot be the way that we deal with our political differences." Here is what we know about Boelter. Mark Bruley, chief of Brooklyn Park Police in Minnesota, described the operation as "the largest manhunt in the state's history," with over 20 different SWAT teams involved in a span of 43 hours. Earlier on Sunday around midday local time, residents of Sibley County, Minn., were sentan emergency alertinforming them that Boelter's vehicle had been found near the state's Highway 25. Boelter was not present at the scene. Prior to this, theMinnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehensionreported that Boelter was last seen on Saturday morning in Minneapolis, shortly after the shootings, when at around 6 a.m., local time, he stopped by a home near 49th and Fremont, where residents say he had rented a room. Security cameras captured footage of Boelter wearing casual clothing and a cowboy hat. Officials said the search for Boelter included the use of unmanned aerial vehicles and helicopters, as well as infrared technology. Bruley said authorities created a perimeter after they were provided information that Boelter was seen in the area of Sibley County, which Evans, the superintendent, described as "rural" and filled with "streams, fields, woods, crops." Where Boelter "was ultimately taken into custody was in a field," Evans said, adding that Boelter was armed during his arrest. Minnesota State Patrol Assistant Chief Lt. Col. Jeremy Geiger said law enforcement did not use force during the arrest and no law enforcement personnel was injured. Boelter "crawled to law enforcement teams," Geiger said, before his arrest. Boelter and Hoffman worked together in some capacity on the Governor's Workforce Development Board. In a press conference, superintendent Evans was asked about the nature of the relationship between Boelter and Hoffman. "There's certainly some overlap with some public meetings with Sen. Hoffman and the individual, but we don't know the nature of the relationship or if they actually knew each other," Evans said. It's unclear if the suspect had previously crossed paths with state Rep. Hortman or her husband. When officers arrived on the scene at Hortman's residence, they spotted a fake police vehicle. When law enforcement searched the SUV, they found a "manifesto" marked with around 70 names of lawmakers and organizations. Hoffman and Hortman were named. The list reportedly included several different lawmakers across Minnesota, the Midwest, and the Capitol, as well as locations for Planned Parenthood. Superintendent Evans has said it would be "premature" to comment with any certainty on the motivation of the attacks based on the writing alone. The authorities have sent extra security to those that they believe are in harm's way with the suspect still at-large. OnMeet the Press,Klobuchar said that more security had been added to her team. "It was politically-motivated, and there clearly was some through line with abortion because of the groups that were on the list, and other things that I've heard were in this manifesto," Klobuchar said. In an interview with NPR, Minnesota Sen. Tina Smith, a Democrat, said she was on the manifesto list and that she is currently working closely with Capitol Police and local law enforcement. There were also "No Kings" flyers,in reference to the protests that took place across the U.S. on Saturday, found in the vehicle. As a result, police urged the public not to attend the Minnesota "No Kings" demonstration. Despite the organizers canceling the event, large crowds still showed up. Boelter is listed as having a home near Green Isle, Minn. The Police conducted a search of the home on Saturday. David Carlson, a friend of Boelter, is quoted as tellingCNN affiliate KAREthat Boelter texted his friends in the lead-up to the shootings. "I just wanna let you know that I love you guys and I wish it hadn't gone this way. I don't wanna say anything more and implicate you in any way, because you guys don't know anything about this, but I love you guys and I'm sorry for all the trouble this has caused," the text reportedly said. According to Carlson, Boelter worked at a funeral home, owned guns, and voted for President Donald Trump last year. ALinkedIn page that seemingly belongs to Boelterstates he has a doctorate in educational leadership and a master's of science in management from Cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee. The prefix "Dr." is used across his online profiles. That LinkedIn profile puts Boelter as the CEO of the Red Lion Group, a self-described security services company. Boelter also appears to be listed as"director of security patrols"for Praetorian Guard Security Services, which isintroduced on the company's websiteas a security firm that provides residential security patrols, event security services, and uniformed security. The companydescribeshow it drives "the same make and model of vehicles that many police departments use in the U.S." A woman named Jenny, believed to be Boelter's wife, is listed as the company's president. In one video reviewed by TIME, a man that resembles a strong likeness to Boelter can be seen criticizing the LGBTQ+ community, saying: "There's people, especially in America, they don't know what sex they are, they don't know their sexual orientation, they're confused. The enemy has gotten so far into their mind and their soul." Dodger Stadium singer confirms she performed national anthem in Spanish to protest ICE, in defiance of teamNew Foto - Dodger Stadium singer confirms she performed national anthem in Spanish to protest ICE, in defiance of team

An interesting national anthem was performed at Dodger Stadium on Saturday — and not because the team wanted it. Rather than sing the traditional "The Star-Spangled Banner," Vanessa Hernández, who performs under the name Nezza, sang "El Pendón Estrellado," the official Spanish version of the anthem commissioned by the U.S. government under Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1945. She apparently did so in defiance of the Dodgers' instructions, as she posted a TikTok following the performance showing an unidentified employee explicitly telling her the song should be in English. "We are going to do the song in English today, so I don't know if that wasn't translated — er, communicated," the employee said. Nezza's caption: "Watch the Dodgers tell me I can't sing the Spanish Star Spangled Banner that Roosevelt literally commissioned in 1945 — so I did it anyway." Wearing a shirt with the flag and colors of her native Dominican Republic, an emotional Nezza paused for tears before delivering the song's final line. In a different video, Nezza confirmed that she performed the song as a protest on the part of the Latino community as the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency continues to carry out raids in Los Angeles: "I didn't think I would be met with any sort of 'No,' especially because we're in L.A. with everything happening. I've sang the national anthem many times in my life, but today I could not. I'm sorry ... I just could not believe, when she walked in and told me 'No,' but I just felt like I needed to do it, para mi gente [for my people]. "My parents are immigrants. They've been citizens my whole life at this point, they got documented really early, but I just can't imagine them being ripped away from me, even at this age, let alone a little kid. Like, what are we doing?" Despite Nezza saying "Safe to say I'm never allowed in that stadium ever again,"The Athletic's Fabian Ardaya reportsthat she was not punished or ejected from Dodger Stadium and is not expected to be banned from the stadium. The team reportedly declined comment on her videos. The Dodgers won Saturday's game 11-5. ICE has been raiding locations throughout Los Angeles since June 6, triggering protests across the city and major political disputes between local politicians and President Donald Trump's administration, most notably the arrest of Sen. Alex Padilla while confronting Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. Both California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles mayor Karen Bass have urged ICE to leave, but Trump has gone as far as mobilizing the California National Guard and deploying hundreds of Marines in the city. A federal judge ruled Friday that Trump's federalization of the National Guard was illegal, but the order to return control to Newsom has been paused pending an appeal this week. Trump himself has somewhat backtracked amid the chaos, directing officers to halt arresting employees at farms, hotels and restaurants. Arrests have continued at other locations. The Dodgers and many of the other major teams in the Los Angeles area have largely remained silent about the current events, though exceptions include MLS's LAFC and the NWSL's Angel City. LAFC released a statement expressing solidarity with the community amid "fear and uncertainty," while Angel City went a step further with shirts reading "Immigrant City Football Club." Veteran utility man Kiké Hernández said he is "saddened and infuriated by what's happening in our country and our city," and that he "cannot stand to see our community being violated, profiled, abused and ripped apart." Former Dodgers first baseman Adrián González, who now works for the team as a broadcaster, called the raids "unconstitutional" and "illegal," urging the government to stop separating families. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Adrián González OLY (@adrian_eltitan) Meanwhile, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, who has spoken on social justice issues in the past, pleaded ignorance about the issues on Friday, per The Athletic: "Honestly, I don't know enough, to be quite honest with you. I know that when you're having to bring people in and deport people, all the unrest, it's certainly unsettling for everyone. But I haven't dug enough and can't speak intelligently on it." Perhaps Hernández can give him some details.
