Workers at an auto shop don’t expect to be handed an infant at the start of their shift. But that’s what happened in Georgia when a woman allegedly gave her 6-month-old baby to two employees at a Jiffy Lube and left without saying if or when she would return. Concerned for the child’s welfare, the assistant manager called police to figure out what to do. But in the middle of the call, the mother returned to the shop with a dangerous weapon.
Mother leaves baby with Jiffy Lube employees in the morning
On October 24 at around 10:15 a.m., officers from the Cobb County Police Department arrested a woman, later identified as 35-year-old Laraven Davis, who allegedly abandoned her baby at a Jiffy Lube auto service shop, according to a report by FOX 5 Atlanta.
Jarayya Mayes, an assistant manager at the Jiffy Lube on Floyd Road, was starting her workday on Saturday morning when she was approached by Davis who was pushing a stroller. Mayes said that had never met Davis in person before, but she has seen her before walking around the business.
Mayes recalls the mother telling her and her coworker how cute her child was. She said, “[Davis] came up to me and my coworker, Elijah, with a stroller. And she was like, hey, doesn’t my baby look so cute? is my baby so cute? We were like, yeah, baby’s adorable. And she was. She was absolutely adorable.”
But it soon became clear to Mayes, who is a mother herself, that something was wrong as Davis continued the conversation. The woman told them that she had something to do and that the workers could keep the child if she did not come back.
Mayes recounted, “She just kept saying, ‘The paperwork is in the bag.’ You guys can just have her if I don’t make it back. Once she said that, red flags immediately.”
Davis faces two charges including child abandonment

After Davis left the Jiffy Lube, Mayes called 911 while checking the infant’s health. She said the baby had a soaked diaper and rashes along her neck and body.
But while she was still on the phone with the dispatcher, Davis returned to the shop about 15 minutes later. Mayes said the mother had come back with a knife and pleaded to have her child back. She recalls her saying, “Where’s the baby? I need the baby. I gotta go, I gotta go. Some stuff just went down. I gotta go.”
Overhearing the conversation, the dispatcher told Mayes not to let Davis take the infant and leave the auto shop before officers arrived on the scene.
The woman was later taken into custody and booked at the Cobb County Adult Detention Center at 11:05 a.m., according to inmate records.
Davis has been charged with two misdemeanors, one count of the abandonment of child and one count of reckless conduct. She is held on a $4,620 bond, and at the time of writing, has not yet been released from jail.
According to The Independent, the 6-month-old was taken to a local hospital for treatment and a medical evaluation. A spokesperson for the Cobb County Police Department said, “It was determined that the baby was wearing soiled clothes and had multiple rashes despite being in overall good health.”
The baby has been placed in the custody of the Georgia Division of Family and Children Services due to Davis having no other family members who could take care of the child.
Police have not disclosed the reasons why Davis left her baby at the auto shop nor where the child will be placed.
