The Thunder announced the update Wednesday evening. Per the announcement, Williams will be re-evaluated before the end of the regular season, leaving hope that he could potentially return in time for the playoffs.
Williams' surgery was to repair a fractured fibula and reconstruct the ligaments in his ankle after he sustained the break and a dislocation of his ankle in Oklahoma City's third game of the season. He underwent the procedure in New York by foot and ankle specialist Dr. Martin O'Malley.
Williams suffered the injury late in the Thunder's 108-101 win over the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday. His leg buckled under the weight of his own body when he fell to the court after contact on a dunk attempt. Clippers guard Kriss Dunn was whistled for a flagrant foul for the contact on the play.
The severity of the injury was immediately apparent, and a Thunder staffer covered Williams' injured leg with a towel. Williams was eventually taken off the court on a stretcher.
The injury is a difficult blow for Williams, who entered the season healthy following an injury-riddled 2025-26 campaign in which he was limited to 33 regular-season games. The Thunder were hoping Williams could rekindle his All-NBA form from their 2024-25 championship run, but now he'll miss most if not all of the season.
Thunder guard Cason Wallace also faces a long-term absence after tearing the labrum in his left shoulder in the same Clippers game. He's expected to be sidelined for several months.
Chet Holmgren (knee tendinitis) and Alex Caruso (ankle sprain), meanwhile, have been sidelined with shorter-term injuries.
